I'm kind of sad to hear this. Sure they released way too damn many games but they were still fun IMO. Hopefully Rock Band doesn't go next, but with the quality of their DLC they technically never even have to release a physical game again.

I'm guessing to fulfill a contract on that. I'm guessing once the rights to his likeness run out, they'll drop it. They HAVE to be under some kind of contract, as the last two Tony Hawk games, RIDE and SHRED, have sold like s***. If I remember correctly, across the Wii, PS3 and 360, in the first week SHRED was out, it sold only 4,000 copies. Yeah. Shortly after THPS4 came out (when I thought IGN was the end-all gaming site), Activision and Tony signed a contract for games until 2015. IGN even joked about more news on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 17 as it developed. ps2.ign.com/articles/365/365641p1.html

Part of me is saddened by this news, but most of me is not surprised. Guitar Hero has run its course. I've been wanting to get RB: Beatles and RB: Green Day, but I want to get a decently, used, cheap guitar to play them on the 360 with.

I'm sad that this is happening, but it was naturally gonna happen. It came in, EXPLODED in popularity, so naturally a ton of sequels and look-a-like games came in and oversaturated the whole situation. It was only natural it was gonna die sooner rather than later.

This sucks, even if you're only a fan of Rock Band this is horrible news as it leaves one title to have a monopoly on the genre. Lack of competition is never a good thing.
And I don't get why everyone says the music game genre has to die. To me FPS war titles are largely the same, and there's been a ton of them released over the years but no one calls for the death of that genre. And even though I generally hate and avoid them, I wouldn't say they should stop making FPS titles.
I've been playing videogames for over 20 years now, and even during the fighting game wars of the early 90s, no one was calling for the MK or SF series to die off (much like with Rock Band and Guitar Hero, I enjoyed both series).
Why do people single out music games when wishing death on a particular series or genre?

The genre could easily make a comeback if it just goes away for a few years. Say 4 years. Then you can bring it back and learn from the mistakes of the last go around. Seems feasible to me anyway.

Cant say im sad to hear of the demise of G.H. Ive tried a few of the games but its absolutely nothing like playing a real guitar so thats probably why i disliked it. Oh and the fact that the songs on all their games never fit my tastes would be the other factor. Good lord! That's quite a wide variety of genres you're not into! A WIDE variety. The mistakes of Guitar Hero are unfortunately going to drag Rock Band down with it, despite the latter doing everything right, and the creators of the latter establishing the genre in the first place.

There was just a huge report on True Crime in a recent gaming mag I read, maybe Gamepro?
Still, it would have been shit anyways, and music games are beyond played out now. They ran it's course.

I don't think they need to die outright, I think we just need to cycle off them for a little bit, and supplement what we have with DLC, at least for a couple years, until the concept of buying a whole new set of music game equipment, then maybe show a little more moderation with the concept than we did this time around.

Many sites never got a press release about Shred existing, and most didn't get review copies. It just kind of happened. It is a shame about True Crimes, is that the dang thing had a bunch of magazine and web features and the people who saw it had very nice things to say, and the dev. team seemed pretty in to what they were doing.

Good riddance. Activision absolutely destroyed that series and did an awful job of not only oversaturating the market, but also creating widespread disinterest in the genre. f*** you Kotick.
At least Harmonix's business model for Rock Band doesn't rely on hard game and instrument sales and can survive on DLC releases pretty easily. Sequel games are really only needed for major engine and feature overhauls.

Eh, it's a shame. But really they haven't been very good since GHIII.

The writing was on the wall with Warriors of Rock, and it's bizarre additions to the game that basically made the game almost impossible to fail on...
I always enjoyed Rock Band series better... as they've had 3 actual games in the series (not counting spin offs like Lego and Beatles) in the same time as Guitar Hero had like what 15?

Yes, the odd thing about True Crimes being canned was it was getting a lot of praise in the preview articles I've seen, many calling it one of the most polished open world games ever made, and add onto the fact that Activision was still releasing info about the game, like the preview article in Gamepro and sending out screenshots not just 2 weeks ago. This is a major WTF.

The music game genre would've probably lasted longer if there weren't so many damn peripherals.

I hate that True Crime was canceled. I liked the first 2 games, trouble with the first one aside. This one wasn't that interesting, but I would have been interested in trying it out.

Not a musical game person in the first place and not surprised by this news - imagine Rock Band is dead too, or will be after one more game - but what the hell else does Activision put out? Call of Duty. And hell, it seems like Activision's sole major release this year is going to be Modern Warfare 3. In fact, thanks to the whole Infinity Ward fiasco last year, the game was barely developed on in 2010, so it looks like Activision is focusing all their studios, and even some outside studios, to help push MW3 out the door in November. They flat out canceled the third person shooter Call of Duty game that was to be made by Sledgehammer Games that was meant to be out about midway through this year, so that Sledgehammer could help the gutted Infinity Ward, and then they grabbed Raven Software to focus on the online multiplayer part of the game, so we have Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer working on the single player, and maybe whatever co-op mode they are putting in this game. And now we have this line from Activision, "These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences.", which makes me think that that simply means they are taking the Guitar Hero 2011 and True Crime teams and are pushing them onto the MW3 project as well. As for why they haven't used Treyarch on MW3, well, that's simple, so Treyarch can focus on the Call of Duty game they are making. The only problem is that Raven Software is making the multiplayer. If you played Singularity's multiplayer, you'll know what I mean.

With Rock Band, Harmonix just let a bunch of people go to, so the music game fad has pretty much lost its biggest two franchises as far as boxed retail goes at the moment.
