With Rock Band, Harmonix just let a bunch of people go to, so the music game fad has pretty much lost its biggest two franchises as far as boxed retail goes at the moment. And Activision also purged a good chunk of the studio behind DJ Hero, so that's probably a dead series, too. Looks like the only music/rhythm game series that will be continued in terms of full retail releases is Dance Central, as we know Dance Central 2 is being made.

So, what franchises does Activision have left besides CoD? I'm pretty sure they'll be leeching on the Blizzard part of 'Activision Blizzard' from this point on.

So, what franchises does Activision have left besides CoD? On the Activision side of Activision Blizzard, they have: - Call of Duty - Tony Hawk - Prototype(Prototype 2 is scheduled for a 2012 release) - Whatever game series Bungie releases with them for the next 10 years, remember, Bungie signed a 10 year contract with Activision to make a new game series. Bet you $5 it is a first person shooter series. On the Blizzard side, they have: - Diablo series - Warcraft series - Star Craft series - "Titan", Blizzard's next MMO.

I always enjoyed Rock Band series better... as they've had 3 actual games in the series (not counting spin offs like Lego and Beatles) in the same time as Guitar Hero had like what 15? Yeah, I stopped with GH when Rock Band came out, haven't touched one of the GH games since. Rock Band just seemed like a way better game, I've got 1, 2, and Beatles and they're all great. I was planning on picking up 3 and the keytar when I saved some cash

At the end of the day, music games are just quick time events. That has nothing to do with this discussion, it is just that I realized that right now.

due to the fact that MTV games ignores the Australian market and releases the Rockband titles long after they have been released elsewhere (it took Rockband 1 a year after the US release here) this is really lame because now i will be forced to play Rockband

Updated first post and thread title. Activision announced that there will be absolutely NO music games or skateboarding games this year. That means no DJ Hero 3/DJ Hero spin-offs nor a new Tony Hawk game this year. So far, that means today, Activision canned the following games: - Guitar Hero 2011 - True Crime: Hong Kong - DJ Hero 3 - Tony Hawk 2011 On the flip side, they did promise us more Call of Duty games. Seriously, they announced that in Asia, to help turn Asian gamers into CoD players, they'll be releasing a free online multiplayer Call of Duty game that features paid micro-transactions, think Battlefield Heroes. However, we don't know what these micro-transactions are. They could be perks, weapons, hell even maps.

Can't blame them, Call of Duty is the cashcow right now. For how long I don't know, but FPS games are the thing right now.

I picked up Guitar Hero/Band/Hits/Metallica combined for about £30 a year ago. I think the last inovation they did was dual pedals for Metallica.
I'm not sad it's not coming back. If Rock Band/Network can keep some what profitable, I can still sing harmonies and play real keyboard notes for years to come.

Viacom sold off Harmonix (they're now an independent developer) at the end of last year and shut down MTV Games, as Harmonix was MTV Games' only client.

I can understand DJ Hero 3 being canned. It's not exactly a big seller. Hell, some stores wouldn't take my copy because the thing barely sells.

If you're not counting spin-offs, Guitar Hero has only had 6 main games in its existence and 4 of them were put out in the time Rock Band has had 3.

It does seem like the rats are jumping off the music game boat. You could kinda see it with MTV Games looking to unload Harmonix. It's more of a cautionary tale, once again: the minute a series looks like it's not going to make you the same amount of profit it used to, it's abandoned for the next moneymaker. It's sad.
Of course, in the case of GH, Activision brought it on themselves by trying to squeeze as much as it could out of it. It will happen with Call Of Duty too. Just a matter of time.
