Florida. Near the Beach. Weathly part of town. Hipsters Gallore!
I guess I would be a "hipster" too. I like coffee, but don't drink it often. Wear in-style clothing. Can be a bit obnoxious at times.

People only hate hipsters because hating the Emo kids got old.

I live in the general vicinity of both Hoboken, NJ, and Brooklyn, NY.
I feel I have every right to rag on hipsters, thank you very much.
It's not so much that they're different...hell, I admire that. It's that they actually conform to suit their image of what "hipster coolness" is.
To put it more succinctly: if you WILLINGLY drink PBR, I question both your taste and your sanity.

To put it more succinctly: if you WILLINGLY drink PBR, I question both your taste and your sanity. Honestly I think it tastes better than the more well known brands. I'll give you the sanity thing tho'

To put it more succinctly: if you WILLINGLY drink PBR, I question both your taste and your sanity. Yeah, PBR tastes like ass. Though I really don't like any of the mass-produced American beers. Either a good import or microbrew-style. Basically, if it's in a can I'm really wary. Main exception to this is Japanese beer that sometimes comes in big cans.

All I know about hipsters is that I'm not one of them. Unless...maybe I am one. Have I been one this whole time? No, wait...maybe you're all hipsters too. Is there some kind of test we could do to decipher this like what they did in "The Thing?" Don't worry Banjo, you are not a Hipster, just a creep ;D jk.

'Hipster Backlash' sounds like something that'd send an old man to the emergency room.

No offense, but after reading through this thread, my point stands. "Hipster" seems like way too vague a label to really be defined.

I'm sorry, but most of the responses in here have described what they think a hipster is defined as, and, in broad strokes, those definitions mostly agree. How is that "too vague"? That's a consensus.

I dunno, I guess I just see it as a way to label people who don't like stuff. I just hate labels in general though (as my many rants against "smark" backlash will attest to).

I still don't believe in the term, or that these people exist. Worst "label" ever. Oh, they exist. A town two hours north of me called Bellingham is frigging full of them. And for those saying they don't know what they are, they are people who seem to be trying so hard not to conform that they are basically playing a role rather than being themselves. They only like indy music and indy movies, they wear T-shirts that support products they've never watched/used, and they scoff at "normal" and "commercial" people and ideas. I don't care what anyone says, they're douches. I agree. Especially the indy music jagoffs.

As a hipster, I find this "backlash" just the jealous prattlings of people who wish they had my iPod and Criterion Collection DVDs. Now excuse me while I drink this Pabst... No, seriously, it's...ok? Yes, I'm sure we drive people up the wall when we throw a little scorn into our reviews of any and every thing we've seen, read or listened to directed at those who haven't seen, read or listened to them or, God forbid, didn't like or, as we like to say, "get" them. But such is life. Let me understand what you're saying. You wish to be able to have an opion without criticism from other while retaining the right to criticise others who don't conform your opinion. I want to be clear because that seems kinda hypocritical.

The thing is, you often know a hipster type when you see one. It's about the clothes, the choices made in style of living (i.e. choice in what part of the city to live in, what kinds of apartments to rent, etc.), and seemingly leading an artist's lifestyle while...not actually being an artist.
I also have no stomach for hipster-style acoustic songs. I love acoustic guitar, but I'm getting tired of all these commercials that have hipster covers of older, better songs done in these wimpy, whiney styles. I'm glad that AT and T commercial where they cover the nation with orange cloth is gone, since that song nearly led me to throwing my TV out the window.
This all being said, I tend to group hipsters under the general umbrella of poseurs. It just feels like people who are trying to hard to exude a certain style and personality. I have nothing against style, I have nothing against liking a certain look; in fact, I take pride in appearing well groomed when I go out, wearing decent clothes, etc. It's when you're doing it just for the sake of a passing fad that you come off as a poseur.

After spending an hour in the bar surrounded by these people drinking their PBR and listening to their go-awful conversation, they deserve the hate.

Also, I read a rant denigrating world travelers such as young adults that backpack through Europe or stay at hostels or such as being simply stupid white middle class kids with too much money who didn't want to work. All referred to as a sort of hippie-ish "children of the world" as said with a sneer. I have a friend that has done exactly this and would love to do it the rest of his life and he's anything but a hipster

I think most people's idea of what a hipster is is what I call "Indier than thou" people. I get it, its cool to know of a band/artist/wrestler/whatever before they're famous. But obnoxiously bashing them and hating them once they become well known and mainstream is ridiculous. Given I loved tons of indie-ish bands (and hundreds of others) the amount of times someone like this has said "Oh, so you don't know about Ginger from the Wildhearts?!" (or something similar when I talk about music), how they've acted offended when I've mentioned I'm a fan and ask them what their favourite album happens to be is glorious. Everyone's a conformist in some way if they're wearing shirts to say out loud "I AM A FAN OF THIS BAND/FILM/CHE GUEVERA!" or whatever it's annoying (particularly people who know nothing of Guevera and think he's like Ghandi!)

You mae a good point, and I think we can spot a "hipster" or the stereotypical one anyway with a few simple questions. "Would you do what you do if all of your friends stopped doing it?" and "Do you understand the meaning and origin behind your latest hobby or did you just latch on to it?" To use this board as an example, we all love wrestling, that's what drew us here originally (for the most part, and yes I'm assuming) so even when everyone says "man, that's stupid" we still watch. A "hipster" to me would be the individual who "loves" it, buys the merch for the top guys or whoever is popular at the moment, but no virtually nothing of the product itself. Not meaning bacstage stuff, but can be easily thrown off. My nephew, I lvoe him, but he's that way with MMA. He wears tap-out clothes all the time because his friends think it's awesome, and will occasioanlly watch a fight with me, but if I throw a name out there or talk about a fight (doesn't have to be from UFC 1 during the tournament days, it could be someone fighting on the undercard) he gives me the deer in the headlights look. Take the scene from PCU where Gutter is getting ready for the concert and Droz says "oh, that's the band with the guy from The Clash, right?" and Gutter just stares blankly at him. This leads to the line "You are aware that they did make music before 1989, right?"
