According to Pwinsider.com, the WWE is requiring all of their signed talent to personally purchase and maintain medical insurance for themselves. WWE will not be covering the cost of the insurance, but as independent contractors, the workers would be able to write off the cost of the medical insurance as a business expense.
This move had reportedly been rumored for a while, but was confirmed on Monday. The change was presented to WWE talent prior to the announcement that UFC was going to provide all of their fighters with medical insurance.
Me thinks that after all the recent negative attention re: their status as independent contractors, you'll see more step like this.

I thought that's the way they've always done it?

I'd hate to be a lower-card talent in WWE right now. Go from poorer to poorest, they'd literally have nothing to scrap together after a week's worth of work.
Keep in mind, mid and upper card talents are gonna be okay, and still be able to save some. The lower people however...

What's changed then? Were they not bothered whether they had it or not before?

My guess is that even as independent contractors, they could probably still qualify for some sort of group discount assuming they'd all be able to buy from the same provider (Though, since they don't all live in the same state, I don't know if they'd be able to do that or not)

Wait, if they can "write off" the cost of the medical insurance then what is the problem?

Wait, if they can "write off" the cost of the medical insurance then what is the problem? And while the WWE isn't covering the cost of insurance, they're covering the cost of the rest of the medical bills.

Wait, if they can "write off" the cost of the medical insurance then what is the problem? Indeed. This seems fine, if a bit "loopholey" to me, but people will still find a way to paint Vince and Co. as Satan for it.

Wait, if they can "write off" the cost of the medical insurance then what is the problem? Doesn't a tax deduction kind of mean nothing when you don't make enough money to have the taxes to deduct from? Like the lower card talent making like, what, 30 grand or so (going from a Christian to Ryder tweet last year) would probably not get back what they paid out due to not having all that much they have to pay in taxes? I admit I don't understand too much about this stuff.

I thought that's the way they've always done it? Not quite. Before, it was "If you want insurance, you have to buy it" now it's "If you want to be employed with us, you have to have insurance" The difference is that now WWE is forcing their employee's to buy health insurance. It's a good move on their part

Tax writeoffs mean nothing anyway as about 80% of the talent now live in Florida or have a house there so they don't have to pay income tax.

No idea what brought this on, but I'm glad it is happening.Anything that helps keep them safe in the long run is okay in my book.
