It takes more than being big and winning matches quickly to be a good monster heel. It requires a degree of charisma to project the sort of aura that makes people think you're this terrifying brute that could rip them apart if you wanted to. Mark Henry's been pulling this off spectacularly over the last year.
Lord Tensai isn't showing any of that. He's just a fat man who lumbers around slowly.

There are two problems that I can see. One: squash matches to introduce a character almost never seem to work. Fans react when there's a storyline, not that a guy seems to be tough. Even Umaga only got over because of Estrada.
But the much much bigger problem is just that his matches are way way too slow. If they were faster-paced, then fans would be eating him up. The fact is: slow matches are specifically designed to make a guy seem unstoppable. But nobody believes anyone is unstoppable anymore. It's just not a characterization that is going to work.

"The undefeated Snitsky." Reminds me of that. Big push. No substance. Snitsky's character at least had a personality after a while. The Lord Tensai character has some presence but no charisma.

It's not the performer, it's the character.
I was a bit iffy on the presentation after his debut. Figured I'd wait and see, but it's only gotten worse each week. He's not the right man for a mysterious Muta-esque gimmick, with the dramatic pauses and the ninja poses. He should be presented more like a Vader type, or some other character that complements his talents.
I really enjoy his stuff from Japan, but he should be booked as he was over there, with the necessary tweaks made to suit the safer WWE style.

Way too much, way too soon.
Plus, he's like a mid nineties character pushed in 2012. Yeah he's good in the ring to a point, but that's about all really. No charisma to speak of beyond that, and the aforementioned push that's right outta the gate.
People just don't care right now.

They should change his gimmick to Quan Chi-Chi: leg-ripping Japanese housewife with a powerful manchild for a husband that always leaves "her" to go fight, causing "her" to fly into a rage. She gets angry and that's when the leg-ripping begins. Instead of the green mist, he uses curry powder. Sakamoto will become Tienshinhan Solo: space-traveling, martial artist bounty hunter with 3 eyes. I thought The Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels was Tenshinhan.

here's no emotional audience investment in his character either in wanting him to lose or being afraid of him.

As far as his matches, I felt like his big strength was being a big guy who could move around, bump if he had to, and keep up with the smaller quicker wrestlers. Having him work a slow paced monster style kinda negates all that.

He really should be more of straightfoward wrecking machine, instead of doing all these silly poses and using the mist. There's nothing mysterious about him, no matter how hard he tries. And on the superficial side of things...his facial hair is ridiculous, and makes him look like a joke.

Is it safe to call him 2012s Sin Cara? Sin Cara got over with live crowds though. The better question is"what isn't wrong with lord tensai?" You can't have a white dude play a japanese sterotype in 2012. In all honesty though, the biggest problem is that Lord Tensai has no charisma. He just doesnt inspire reactions. He can't connect with crowds. I mean he was in the ring with two guys who get noticable reactions and he got...nothing. And he won. Or maybe it's just that hes albert

He's like Umaga, if Umaga wasn't f***ing great. Umaga had some great matches, but he really had a whole lot of crappy ones too. If we're comparing them from debut, at this point, Umaga had killed Ric Flair and squashed Eugene IIRC. Neither was good. Good point. It still hasn't been that long and the best may be yet to come.

I have never seen anyone go over 2 people like Punk and Cena in just a few weeks and get a reaction as quiet as that.
They need to do SOMEthing if anything to say this character, quick!

Tensai looks like some kind of villain that always loses in kids cartoons. This! A million times, this! Tensai is a cartoon character. The "OOOOOHHH, JAPANESE!!" stuff is dumb. The green mist, while something of a neat throwback, still feels out of place in the more visceral, naturalistic world of modern WWE (even Taker has been made mortal in recent years, with much less of the lightning bolt/dry ice stuff). He really does seem like the kind of villain who has an endless cadre of faceless goons at his command, who by the end of the show will be defeated by the heroes and be shaking his fist angrily towards the sky. They should just recruit all of the NXT/Superstars jobbers, mask them, dress them in karate gis and turn them into Tensai's version of the Foot Clan ninjas.

I wasn't talking baby-punting, ironically loveable Gene Snitsky -- but re-invented, bald, yellow-toothed "undefeated Snitsky" WWE repackaged in ECW and then acted like he was basically a new guy.

Yeah I think Lord Tensai needs like some ninja minions or something. If he's going to be cartoony go all out with it. If he's Master Shredder he needs some foot soldiers, maybe a Bebop and Rocksteady.

He looks completely ridiculous when he ninja poses. There's nothing ninja-like about a 6 foot 6, slow, fat white guy, and I laugh every time he waves his arms around.

I'm pretty sure it's because a white guy doing the "evil, inscrutable Japanese wrestler" gimmick is just incredibly stupid. I mean I don't know why they're doing a kind of racist gimmick like that in 2012 anyway but if it were, say, Sakamoto doing the gimmick MAYBE it'd work. But a big white guy from Massachusetts doing it is just dumb and dumb in the way that completely drags you out of what your watching not dumb in the fun way.
