There's been some long time rumors about what led to the heat between Macho Man and Vince. I was listening to Stone Cold's Pod cast with Jerry Lawler last night and he talks about how he got the role of commentator. Apparently when Macho was doing commentary there was a night while Vince was in office and asked to speak to Macho about what was going on in the booth. One of Vince's guys said "I think you better see this" and he turned on WCW to see Macho. Could the heat between the two have started with Macho leaving WWF without telling anyone?

Yeah, pretty much. They were extremely close and Randy left without saying a word, and Vince found out by watching WCW on TV? If that's true that explains the whole situation.

They gave him a farewell on the air. I don't think he somehow jumped ship without them noticing, but people have speculated that Vince was hurt by Savage going to WCW, sure.
I am just glad people seem to have finally moved on from the incredibly stupid, absolutely asinine Steph theory.

There's also rumors that Vince was mad because they lost the Slim Jim endorsement to WCW when Savage left.

To be honest, I think Vince envisioned Randy being the new Pat Patterson. Wind his in-ring career down with one last decent run, make him an announcer with occasional in-ring appearances and become a road agent/booking committee member. Considering that Savage always laid his matches out, he would have been a pretty good agent.

According to Wiki Savage last appeared in WWE on 10/17, last footage aired on 10/31, and he first appeared on WCW on 12/3. I hardly doubt they didn't notice he was gone for an entire month before seeing him on WCW.

The easiest to believe theory is a bundle of things, mainly centered around Macho leaving for WCW. Most claim that Vince was extremely sad and pissed that Macho left because he considered him a close friend and that he took the Slim Jim deal with it. He hurt him as both a friend and as a work colleague. I think that shook Vince a fair bit, before Macho as far as I'm aware everyone went to WCW with his blessing, Vince has always seemed to try to be just one of the boys when it came to his workers, he saw a lot of people he considered friends abandon him for a bigger paycheck, I think Macho was the breaking point.

The heat is that Vince has heat with people that don't need him. Macho Man didn't need him.

He said it was supposed to be a one night thing but never explains how it became full time. He also admits he's never really cared about being a commentary.

Lawler's story is bullshit, and I think he said the same thing in his book.
It was well-known that Savage had left for WCW, long before he debuted on Nitro. And Savage gave notice and seemed to have left on good enough terms that Vince gave him a rare on-air "goodbye" on RAW the first night Savage was gone from commentary.
I think he was even on WCW Saturday Night and a PPV just before being on Nitro, but I could be wrong.
I'm pretty sure it was all covered extensively in the Wrestling Observer newsletter well before his WCW debut.

There's also rumors that Vince was mad because they lost the Slim Jim endorsement to WCW when Savage left. Especially considering the money troubles they had in the mid-90s, that would have been a big hurt to the company.

I would also like to point out that while Lawler did do color commentary on the first RAW after Savage left, he was hardly full time. I remember a several month stretch of time where they had a rotating color man and then both Cornette and Shawn Michaels doing it fairly regularly. I don't think Lawler got the job full time until after WrestleMania XI nearly six months after Savage left.

Yeah, I heard Lawler's story on the Steve Austin podcast and Lawler seems very truthful, so I don't doubt him.
I've heard Lanny talk about how Randy wanted to continue wrestling and Vince told Randy that it's time for Randy to be a broadcaster. Lanny says that Randy told Vince something to the effect of, "Well, I guess I'm going to get a second opinion." Lanny really speaks to Randy's issues with Vince and WWE, stemming from WWE not allowing Angelo Poffo to appear at a legend battle royal on a house show to moving Randy to the announce booth, to WWE not going with Randy's proposed feud with Shawn Michaels.

The taking the Slim Jim endorsement to WCW seems like by far the most plausible speculation of why Vince might of had heat with Macho Man.
As like others have said this was at time when Vince was having financial difficulties and trying to deal with the fallout from steroid trail scandal.

I can't say I blame Savage for jumping ship. While 90s Savage wasn't as good as 80s Savage, he could still go in the ring and got to be a main eventer for most of the next five years in WCW, no doubt making more money there.
