I bet she's probably one of those mothers who forces the father or someone else look after the kids... I think the moral of this story is that you shouldn't act like a *insert C word* to people. Why would it be weird or unfair for the father to look after the kids? Is he "forcing" her to do it when she does it? I thought all of that was just called parenting.

While I agree with an assessment that the image, her followup, and general disposition is C-wordish, I don't think it's an invitation to question or criticize her parenting.

Everyone saying "I don't see what the big deal us".....read the thread. Multiple explain why they don't like it. Shoving it off as then being too sensitive doesn't make it right. The opposite is true as well, but that side is sounding less matter of fact.
She did something great. Now she's exploiting it for money and making people feel bad. That's marketing to women 101. I'm not offended, but I hate that tactic. Its what makes my girlfriend who is slightly overweight think she's less than. She works and goes to school. Its not her job to be in shape. It's harder when you have other non-fitness careers.

Yeah, none of us have any idea what kind of a parent she is, so that really should be out of bounds to comment on.
It's the message that's in discussion here. She may not be some terrible person, but she's perpetuating a societal inclination toward body-shaming and shaming the less fortunate for "making excuses".

I somehow read this as "fat shaming with a lobster". But we want our lobsters nice and fat. So when we buy an eight dollar lobster, we can fatten him into an eighty dollar lobster and eat the profits.

The question that remains unstated from all this for me is: why is 'improvement of the self' something that is socially, culturally, and popularly desired anyway, given that notions of fat shaming and physical fitness are a part of the same apparatus to regulate and normalize certain kinds of behaivour (against other forms of behaviour that are deemed 'wrong', 'improper', 'unhealthy', 'immoral', and so forth)? Just an aside, but I love that we live in a World that there can be "fat shaming" like being overweight is super okay otherwise. Not to say that everyone is not susceptible to padding on a few here and there, just saying thst if you're like 5'2 329, you're not morbidly obese, you're merely being shamed into thinking you might be too heavy by a society that cannot accept that your moobs are dead sexy. Fat is fat. That's not to say the attitude that leads chicks to try and weigh thirty-five pounds is appropriate, but neither is the one that makes you think it's okay that you struggle traversing conventional archways. Impressive. Like right after. You may as well have followed it with "for example." By the way, contrary to the popular belief that people like There is Nothing Left probably ascribes to, not everyone with a problem with this is some morbidly obese individual with one foot in the grave and the other in a tub of molasses. Take me, for instance; I may not have washboard abs, but I'm in damn good shape. I can walk for miles and run for hours, I do squats up to 50 and beyond just to see how far I can go before my legs burn. Believe me, I have no issue with my health and no problem with my size. But unlike her, I actually know and care about people who have real jobs - 40+ hour a week ones - who after bills and taxes, can barely afford food food and workout equipment, let alone green food and a gym membership. Maybe it was meant for her friends - friends of a similar pay grade. Perhaps rather than spitting at people below that paygrade for getting offended, she should have tried a little harder to keep it in her own circle, rather than making assumptions about us po' working class folk.

Yknow, I was thinking we should have some equality here. So we've seen The Perfect Woman, but what about The Perfect Man?
Thanks Jorgen!

This story has been all over the news here because the lady is from Sacramento. Apparently she only posted it on her personal Facebook page and people shared the photo and it blew up. I'm in the camp of who gives a shit? She's fit and proud of it and that's good for her. I don't understand how people are getting offended by this. I can see thinking she's full of herself and could use a little humility. But that's pretty different from being offended.

I think the problem is that a lot of people don't feel it's possible to be offended unless something is directly insulting you in some way. A lot of people feel offense if they feel an image or message is insulting to other people, too, though. And frankly I think this image is really, really insulting toward both the majority of recent mothers out there and people who aren't in great shape. That doesn't mean I feel everybody who belongs in those groups SHOULD be offended; that's their personal prerogative. However, that doesn't mean I can't have a reaction that takes those groups into account.

I made my post before reading through the thread, and reading the thoughts of others who thought it through more than I did makes me agree with you. My only reaction when seeing the picture was that it was just a douchey thing to do, but there's more to it than that and I see that now.

How can you possibly base that on anything from that one picture though? Maybe she is, maybe she ain't; but isn't making that sort of assumption just as wrong as what she's supposedly doing? This I know this place tends to be like a support-group on the island of misfit toys and the defensiveness runs high but geez.

She got herself into great shape after three kids, good for her. I don't know why people are throwing a shitfit since it's laziness-shaming instead of fat shaming.

I'm split on this. On the one hand, the "what's your excuse" caption is obnoxious, nobody is obligated to work out until they look like a model. Plus realistically not everyone is capable of looking like that no matter how hard they work, if they even have the time to work out and the money to eat healthy, and women face immense pressure to be thin. On the other hand, she has every right to be proud of her body and her hard work. I think overall she just went about things in a very douchey, look at me sort of manner.

I don't think that was the message she was trying to send. Nobody is obligated to work out until they look like a model, however, everyone SHOULD make some effort to work out and be in decent shape regardless of what they're capable of looking like. Like others have said, this is more of a "laziness-shaming" thing than a "fat-shaming" thing. There are plenty of fat people in the world who go to the gym and are in great physical shape, some of them in better shape than thin people.

Aaaand...yeah.
Sounds fat-shamey. Strangely though, reading this topic is giving me a lot of weird thoughts about molasses and lobster. Must stop posting here after midnight CST.
