As it should. I've read up on the expanded universe and my reaction was "wait-- wha??". When you make EVERYTHING canon, things can go wrong very quickly. Now if we can remove 80% of the prequels from the canon.

Don't care. If you have such a big franchise as Star Wars and you want to produce additional content, just let the writers decide what previous works to build on and what to ignore. They're telling the stories, not the people who own the "universe" or whatever.

The shocking thing about this is that people actually considered stuff outside of the OT canon in the first place.

Most of the EU was in a tenuous existence of reality anyway...
Things that weren't in the movie or weren't explicitly said to be in canon by Lucas was on a third tier of stuff that could happen more or less.
Though I personally like the tiered system of stuff that happened and stuff that might happen... I could see why they'd want to pitch it out
edit: Though I have a feeling my friends who are a huge fan of the Thrawn novels is going to be pissed since that's undoubtedly on the chopping block.

The alternative is to go the Doctor Who route and say "everything is canon sort it out for your selves!"

They better stay away from Shadows of the Empire and The Courtship of Princes Leia.

yeah not good when people become selective in what THEY WANT to be in the universe
keep it all i say, otherwise what was the point in giving rights to people who write the comics and novels and games then?

While I hate "canon vs. non canon" arguments, to be fair, George Lucas, or at least his office, usually had to approve storytelling decisions back in the day when Expanded Universe stuff was being written, so one could say "but Lucas SAID this was canon!", I guess.
It really doesn't matter: canon is in the eye of the beholder.
...Though they'd best not screw with Grand Admiral Thrawn...

I'm pleased about this. Most of the expanded universe stuff I've read tends to vary between awful fanfiction to mediocre. Although, I LOVE the Rogue Squadron series and that book that was from the point of view of some random grunts on the Death Star.
I'm really glad Disney are just ignoring it and wiping it from canon rather than trying to fit their own stuff around what is essentially fanfiction. They really should have had better quality control with the Star Wars expanded universe and bit some of the awful bits in the bud early on.

Interesting fact: Lucas nixed the idea of Anakin Solo being the Hero of The New Jedi Order because he thought it would be too close to the prequels and confuse people. So they switched him with Jacen's storyline......so a good Character died and an annoying one lived. Shit I just made myself depressed.

Yeah, I only really had time for the Thrawn and Rogue/Wraith Squadron Stuff. In fact I read them all up to when they killed Chewie and never looked at another one again. Glad I missed them turning one of the Solo kids evil and him killing Mara Jade for some bizarre reason.

This is really great news. The EU is so huge, so winding that it's impossible to keep track of everything. There's so many random, poorly-written characters, awfully-designed alien races, horrid storylines and plot developments that pretty much nobody can know all of what's going on.
Probably the best thing about this is that the Vong and all associated stories will almost certainly be eliminated. That stuff was bad.

Easiest way for people to look at this, who might be upset about this decision:
The stuff that happens in the EU stuff is alternate universe.
That's how Star Trek has done it since the beginning: only things in the shows and movies counted (well, The Animated Series was a "maybe" in what counted or didn't), and books, comics and the like were just alternate universe stories.
