In fact, if this was Terminator 3, I think people would feel a lot better about it--because a lot of people are jaded towards it in the first place due to how disappointing the last two have been. I think it would be the opposite case. It's been helped because T3 and Salvation have really lowered people's expectations; can you imagine how high the expectations would be if this was the first Terminator movie in 23 years?

Wh... what WAS that?
It was better than Salvation, but that doesn't mean it wasn't incredibly goofy, especially for a Terminator movie. And yes, I see the Battlefield Earth comparisons.

I won't lie, I thought it was pretty darn good. Probably the second best entry in the series. I did have low expectations going in, but I was dumbfounded by how good it was compared to how terrible the trailers and everything made it look. Very solid action film and a great Terminator movie. So yeah, I'd recommend seeing it. It's much, much better than T3 or Salvation. I caved and saw it. It was, okay.
Better than T3 and Salvation.
I'm interested enough to give the next one a shot. I'm glad they realized how necessary Arnold is to the series.

Also f*** that trailer for ruining what could have been a pretty neat twist. I saw no trailers and knew nothing about the twist but could see that coming soon as you could saw "Haaws Wolfie?"

That's true. Expectations would be unbelievably high at that point. As good as this movie is--I don't think it could handle that much hype because it does still have its flaws. But I've had some time to think on it (one day ) and I'm still a huge fan of it. I also think some people may be so jaded about the franchise that they weren't ready to enjoy it, no matter what. I was almost there myself.

Saw it, loved it, can't wait for the next. I'm hoping for a 10 to 14 year old John to be included, against Skynet itself.

28m at the box office, only came in 3rd on a 155m budget. Ouch.
I guess it will make it back up overseas, but that's gotta be real disappointing domestic box office.

This is starting to bug me in movies, "A sequel will explain it" What guarantee do you have that you will get a sequel, tell it all in the one film because if you can't do a sequel then we're stuck with a Movie full of holes. This is what bugs me about the age of franchises we live in. I'm okay with sequels, but every movie should be a stand alone thing. Then, if the fan demand is there for more and there is another potential story to be told, THAT's when you make a sequel.

It's absolutley killing it internationally though and is looking to be the biggest hit of Arnold's career (internationally). He's just finished in America, box office wise.

It's killing in overseas with $74 million. Problem is, North America's still more interested in Pratt racing raptors and Amy Poehler being adorable.

I can't believe they had that scene with the boombox and the song wasn't You Could Be Mine. I mean considering how many easy callbacks the movie has (Dead Terminators Don't Wear Living Tissue). Why would Sarah's 1984 boombox have that song on it though?

They made money off of a shared universe so all shared universes will make millions of dollars! Yeah, tell a full story in your damned movie/game/whatever maybe leave teases for sequels or references to a further conflict... (The empire still exists at the end of Star Wars for instance) ... don't just assume that you'll have time to tell the full story at a later date. Otherwise you end with things like the game Too Human, which was announced to be the first of a trilogy! which flat out isn't happening.

I enjoyed the movie a lot more when I started to pretend that Commando and Running Man were stories about how old Terminator Arnie passed his time.

International box office is really starting to mean a lot more to the film industry, probably because of some many domestic U.S. disappointments - and also because of the skyrocketing costs these film companies spend to make movies, too.
It'll take a while longer for it to click in casual viewers or observers' minds, because nowadays seeing bad domestic takes means failure in their minds. Hence, focus more on international box office and there will be less "failures" in the viewers' or observers' minds.
