I wonder if Punk had a Smashing Pumpkins moment
"Well Homer, all I have is my fortune, my palatial home, and my absurdly hot wife........*realisation*.....*guitar riff*!"

Concerning the concept that we should feel badly about Punk not main eventing a Wrestlemania, I think that's looking at it a bit too simply. Punk even said it in the podcast: if he was at least being paid on a level with the other guys who were in the "multiple main events" of WM 29, he wouldn't have a big case for being annoyed by it all.
Rather, I think the issue is that, particularly for a guy who's as driven and self-confident/egotistical/whatever you want to call it as Punk is, he was simply fed up with WWE constantly feeding him a line of bullshit. "Go out there and steal the show!"; he does that. "Go out there and make yourself famous!"; cuts the worked shoot promo, does that. "Carry the title with pride, lead the locker room, be a role model"; according to Punk, he does that (though obviously none of us know exactly how that all went).
It's like he even said in the worked shoot: every imaginary brass ring he was supposed to grab, he grabbed. Yet, when it came down to it, when it came time to make it clear who the top dogs in the WWE were, Vince and company would just default to "Cena's on top, part timers from the old days always go over, none of you can reach that level. Even if you do main event, you'll make less money, a clear statement on how we feel about this matter." Basically, they love Cena, and can't really be bothered to allow anybody else to reach the level Cena has, because...well, just because.
Add in all the other factors, like the endless injuries, denying him time off, the horrific medical work, etc., and it makes the entire experience miserable. What's the point in making all the money you can make in that position if you don't get to live your life enjoying it at any point? It was inevitable that things would go sour.
But yeah, it's not just the literal "didn't get to main event 'Mania" factor, I think it has a lot more to do with the circumstances surrounding it and the clear statements WWE was making concerning who was allowed to be considered "top tier".

Spot on.
The thing with Punk, he did get a lot in his career. But never once did it seem like too much, or that he had peaked. But in WWE's eyes, there was a very finite level to which he was allowed to climb. He became the second biggest star on the roster, but then he lost to Triple H, The Rock, The Undertaker, and Brock Lesnar. If just ONE of those guys had put him over, it would've been big for him. He never even beat John Cena clean. And sure, pro wrestling, wins and losses aren't the most important thing. But there's such an obvious pattern there, and I agreed wholeheartedly when he said it diminished his value in the eyes of that casual fan that WWE covets and cares about the most. I was complaining about WWE's part-time God-tier since 2012 for that very reason, it makes the rest of the roster look less important and makes any shows those guys dn't wrestle on less important. They put all their eggs into the Mania basket and their buyrates for other PPVs bombed. It just bumps everyone down a notch, there's only so many people fans can care about. It's very short-sighted thinking on WWE's part. It's not "good business" to do the easy thing now and have no plan for the future.

At this point in my life I'm really starting to question my wrestling hobby. Especially the WWE part of it. Punk was getting 2 MRIs a week while he was wrestling. He's insane. The wrestling industry is insane. And sick. I can't watch TNA either because it's just as bad or worse than the WWE when it comes to this. Maybe, maybe I can enjoy ROH or perhaps SHIMMER. These companies don't seem to have the life and death mentality of working. Hate to be the one to break this to you but...welcome to the wrestling business. That's how it works. Promoters are assholes that will work the horse until they have to put a bullet in their head. God forbid what's going on in that wrestler's personal life, as long as he's making me money, who cares!?!?!? It's an awful awful attitude that has existed since pretty much the beginning and I fear will never truly go away as long as they are carny bastards promoting it and young wrestlers that don't have much long-term thinking that are willing to live in a wheelchair in their later years so they can be on top now. When Jesse Sorenson broke his neck, Dixie Carter personally promised him and his mother that TNA would pick up the tab on his medical bills. Then, they just didn't without telling Sorenson. The point I'm making is that there are some real scumbags that are leading the industry and there always has been. Kinda makes you wonder, if Punk was that banged up, what kind of shape is Cena in who worked a more extensive schedule for a much longer period of time? Think about it like this. I've been watching wrestling and discussing it on the internet for 17 years. And this is when I'm thinking of quitting. Cena probably isn't as banged up because he has never been as much of a mark for the business (sorry, that's the most accurate way to put it) as CM Punk. CM Punk himself said he wrestled Taker like he had a "death wish". He didn't have to do that, and Cena doesn't. It may get him "you can't wrestle" chants in arenas across the country, but it has kept him where he is and he'll be able to walk normally when he's 40.

Have you known Cena on a personal basis since he was 5? How can you say he's never been a mark for the business if you don't know the man, only the character.

I've heard him talk about the subject numerous times, and I've heard Punk do the same. If you can't tell there is a tremendous difference in how they view things I don't know what to tell you.

Please tell me you are not saying that John Cena, the man who has rushed back from 3 major surgeries in the last 8 or so years, scrambles to do every bit of promotion he can for WWE, has openly admitted that without wrestling he is lost and constantly puts on show stealing match after match (especially when he and Punk were paired) doesn't love this business. The same guy that Punk said in the AOW was the only other one to fight for what he believes in backstage and according to every possible source is hanging on by a thread right now, isn't a mark for it?

One thing I don't understand though is why Cena hasn't yet given WWE Hobson's Choice. As much as WWE has invested in him, they'd be loath to lose their top star and top draw. There's so much he could force them to change if they didn't meet his demands. And if they don't, he could (A) Threaten to quit, or worse, (B) Threaten to start a union. As much as he loves wrestling, what's stopping him? He's had an illustrious career and millions of dollars to his name. He sure won't be hurting if WWE calls his bluff and he bails.
