I recall a story like this where a routed football player's father actually called out the opposing team's coach for "bullying" because they ran up the score. www.si.com/si-wire/2013/10/22/tim-buchanan-aledo-bullying-routUnsportsmanlike, okay. Bullying? That's a sorry way to try to get your kid's dignity back.

I like to think the winning coach trains those girls like the Cobra Kai
Coach: "We do not train to be merciful here.....mercy is for the weak....if a girl confronts you on the court, she is the enemy and an enemy deserves no mercy....IS THAT UNDERSTOOD???"
Girls: "YES SENSEI!!!!"

I wonder why the coach of the losing team didn't forfeit once it became obvious what was happening. I mean if Bob Backlund destroys Bret Hart and Helen doesn't throw in the towel, it doesn't make Bob Backlund a bad person, it makes Helen Hart a bad parent.

I don't know basketball, but why would he be punished for winning a game? He was likely suspended for severe unsportsmanlike conduct. This is not like the last time a team won by a score of that margin. In that game the coach yanked his starters after they got up by 30 midway through the first quarter and played the end of the bench players only for the second half and still blew the other team away. They did not do a full court press (or any sort of press). He merely had whatever players were out there play hard. Their team just happened to be that superior to the other. The opposing coach was not bitter about it at all, where in this case the opposing coach seems to be.

American journalism. Apparently brilliant.

High school basketball doesn't have a shot so its not like they had to take a shot every 35 seconds and were just making a lot of them. So you really had to want to run up the score to do so.

It's stories like this that lead to the idea of "not keeping score"

Running a full court press up like 85-1 in the second quarter is so hilarious.

I don't know what would feel worse being on a losing team, losing in a landslide like this or having the game forfeited because we sucked so bad.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand this story? I've read it twice and I still don't get it. Why was the coach suspended? Why is whupping a team a crime?

For those questioning why this is bad.
Imagine a Ryback squash match, where he hits all the signature moves in the first minute, then shells shocks. Then shell shocks a second time. Then a third time... then a 82nd time.
It's a "stop, they're already dead" sort of thing. Actually, Monty Python can explain it better:

He played 3rd string the whole second half and told them not to shoot until 7 seconds was left, and they still scored 60 points, at some point the other team gotta have some pride

Yeah sorry, not feeling much sympathy for the opposing team. If your team isn't as conditioned and skilled as the other team, that's the problem of your team. Do more practice, get more serious about your playing. You don't pitch a fit about it, you find out what your weaknesses are, and you improve yourself.
Might sound harsh, but life is tough, and you gotta deal with it.

Read the title and though a coach partook in some marijuana usage and took on his team by himself and whipped their ass. I have a movie script to write.

Going to a different version of the story, the team has won every game but two of them by at least 30 points and have scored 100 points three times this season. Mind you, this is in high school basketball, which uses 8 minute quarters.
I'm fine with this at the college level and the pro level, but it takes on a different form at the high school level, where these coaches are most likely former jocks trying to get their glory days back by never growing out of that mold. It smacks of immaturity and lack of perspective on the part of people who are supposed to be teachers, since that's their main job in the school district.
