If I was the player that scored the two points, I'd be holding that over the rest of the team forever. Ah, looking at it, the points had to have been scored through free throws. Well, if there were two people that made one free throw a piece, then they both should hold it over the others .

Maybe it's like that episode of Clone High where if they score at least one point in the game, they win the game.

I don't know basketball, but why would he be punished for winning a game?

The team with 2 points should be punished for sucking so hard.

I don't know basketball, but why would he be punished for winning a game? I guess the issue is that it was too good a win. From what I've heard (since it's not really a thing where I am), some people take issue with the idea of a game between kids or teenagers being one by too hard a margin due to it hurting the wee guy's feelings and shit. So I guess it's down to poor sportsmanship really.

They only had 1 point at half time... so they only made 1 free throw EACH HALF.
That's insane. BUT, I can see the winning team playing that way so they can get the practice in. Actual game practice is beneficial.

I sympathize with Bloomington. I couldn't score in high school, either.

I don't know basketball, but why would he be punished for winning a game? Good sportsmanship. This story comes up every once in a while in the U.S., usually with basketball but sometimes in football too. One high school or middle school team just completely dominates the others and people worry that it starts to become an exercise in cruelty after a while. It's not professional sports, so some argue that the dominating team should take their starters out or play less aggressively, etc while others say that, as long as it is all on the up and up, that it should be fine and the dominating team shouldn't feel bad for winning. The losing team can learn a lesson about losing and being a good sport. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion in the end.

I'm... I'm so confused... are they mad at him for making their team win? I don't think I've ever heard of someone getting punished for doing their job right.

I don't know basketball, but why would he be punished for winning a game? Something about disrespecting opponents by running up the score. More of an American thing than a basketball thing... something which I never will understand. The opponent has a duty to not suck too. I don't get it mainly because I'm the least competitive person ever, so I can laugh at getting totally battered at a sport. But even for the really competitive people, how much damage can be done by one heavy defeat? And I don't see the difference in a team going 50-0 in the first half and deliberately not shooting to keep the score that way, as opposed to playing the same way and ending the game 100-0. I'd see both as equally humiliating.

What I wanna know is why didn't they call the game off when it was clear by the first five mintues of the first quarter that this was a rout? Judging by the score at half time, the opposing team didn't care about it and didn't want to be there
And why is it that schools have teams in sports that are awful and always have been and insist on making them play when they are talentless and lose all the time?

I'd see both as equally humiliating. Usually, that is a good case, but the statline on his team's side does say they likely "did" overdo it a little- the fact that in the second half, the score was "only" 57-1 his team, without the starters, and apparently not doing a full-court press on the team- doesn't say that the opposing team totally blew them out, but it also does say they could have taken out the starters earlier (or not pressed the opponents the whole half in the first half). If that happened, the game still would have been a blowout of "running up the score" levels, but it also would have gone into the other side of running up the score's "so...should we throw the ball right to the opponent? Should we start shooting the ball into our own hoop and give them some points? What should we do?" side of running up the score.

I just want to hear the halftime speech from the coach down 104-1. Something from 'Hoosiers' maybe?

That's one suspended game for each point the other team scored.
