I don't know basketball, but why would he be punished for winning a game? He was likely suspended for severe unsportsmanlike conduct. This is not like the last time a team won by a score of that margin. In that game the coach yanked his starters after they got up by 30 midway through the first quarter and played the end of the bench players only for the second half and still blew the other team away. They did not do a full court press (or any sort of press). He merely had whatever players were out there play hard. Their team just happened to be that superior to the other. The opposing coach was not bitter about it at all, where in this case the opposing coach seems to be. This is an Indiana thing, but similar spiel. Remember the flack Bloomington South got over decimating Indianapolis Arlington 107-2... who had to forfeit their season that year when one of their five players had bad grades? Yes, I said five. I dunno why we keep punishing teams for having better talent, and in women's basketball, where it is far more obvious, people get mad when a team wins by 150. The losing team is playing because they want the experience, while the winning team is playing so those girls can try and go to Stanford or UConn. If you want a slaughter rule (technically "mercy rule"), instill it, but when you don't have it, just live with it.

IF a grown man High on drugs is beating down a bunch of people, he should go to jail, not just be suspended.

"But he just won"
Not really, he pretty much helicoptered his dick in the losing team's face, after lying to them to begin with to basically get an easy ride. He was basically a hustler.

Yeah sorry, not feeling much sympathy for the opposing team. If your team isn't as conditioned and skilled as the other team, that's the problem of your team. Do more practice, get more serious about your playing. You don't pitch a fit about it, you find out what your weaknesses are, and you improve yourself. Might sound harsh, but life is tough, and you gotta deal with it. If you got blown out that badly, then there is more to it than having issues you have to deal with. For whatever reason, you never had a chance of winning. Near as I can tell, the two schools are about the same size but the tax base, and therefore the potential budget, is much larger at Arroyo than Bloomington (San Bernadino is about 10x Bloomington, and that does not take into account the slight difference in median income). While Bloomington's profile suggests that they do have some success in sports, I would surmise that girls basketball does not get a significant portion of the school's sports budget. I suspect that Arroyo had the following advantages, most of which only massive budget increases can rectify: - better coach - better equipment - better development program in middle school - more opportunities for players to play and develop in middle school (more middle schools feeding into the school = more teams = more player slots)

To be fair, Bloomington South sometimes takes success at sports far too seriously. Any time they take being dicks to another level they probably should be smacked down a peg or two.

I was once part of a soccer team that got beat 29-0 and I actually wasn't bothered at the time, the other team had superior players, older and therefore better physically developed etc
And you better believe I wear that score line as a badge of honour nowadays lol. Plus I always remember I had moved up a group and was a goalkeeper and was told in no uncertain terms by the main goalkeeper at the time that he was Number 1 so I got a little kick out of seeing 29 goals go by him especially since I was in goals the next time and we only lost 9-3 (That's a 23 goal turn around baby!)
As for this case, normally I'd say that losing is part of life and why should the guy get punished but this just seems really excessive like surely after 80 odd points they should just go through the motions and show some compassion

The scoreline doesn't bother me as much as the fact that he ran a full court press the entire half.

I will always and forever be of the mindset that in sports, it is not the offense's job to stop themselves. I have no problem with what the coach did. We've all played youth sports, and we've all been victorious in a decisive ass-whomping, just like we've all been on the receiving end of a decisive ass-whomping.

The coach took his starters out at the half, and his bench players were burning the clock the best they could. Unless there was a mercy rule, there wasn't much else to do.
And I'm FARRRR from one of the mouth-breathing tough guys on the internet that will complain that this is a continuation of the "pussification of America".
The suspension was completely unfounded, because the coach did everything "the right way", and the opposing team really was just that bad. Two points? TWO?

How can you be so bad as to only score on two free throws?

Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive once coached his daughters Jr team. He would blow teams out by having his girls play 4 on 5 defense and leave one girl back to cherry pick missed shots. I think there is a strong chance Mr Randive has already contacted this man to bring in as either an advisor or coach for his NBA team. Between these two, how could you lose?!!

When I was a kid in elementary school I made the Aussie Rules Football team 3 years running. I was 10, 11 and 12 during those seasons and the very first season when I was 10 we didn't have a lot of the older kids who were really good so we finished the season last or second last I believe. I remember a game where we scored like 10 points and the other team got 50 on us. We were bummed that we lost but we all got over it by the next week and it personally drove me to do better to try and stop the ass kicking during the match.
An ass kicking can help you become a better athlete and a more humble person. If we baby the youth of today how are they going to deal with the first mean person they come across in adulthood?

The coach was definitely a prick for running up the score. Saying "what they were just winning" is obtuse.
The real problem is that these two teams should have never played each other. There's "come on stop sucking try harder" and then there's sheer talent. The gap between the two teams is ridiculous.
In fact, I sort of doubt the entire story. There's no shot clock in high school basketball, so that quote about the coach telling them not to shoot until there were 7 seconds on the shot clock is obviously false.

California high school basketball just might have a shot clock. Every state high school athletic council has its own rules. Some states don't even use the same number of players for some sports.

Yeah was he high on his own drama or what? Whatever happened to the Slaughter Rule? Coach McGuirk, where art thou!?!? This is what happens when you play the whole game....MELISSA. Also, Clone High reference on page 1.Goo thread lol And people saying they don't see the issue, are you familiar with HS sports? These teams shouldn't have been playing, but the press being put on after they were up by 40 is what makes it egregious. That is beyond just winning. That's just being overtly aggressive. I know sports are supposed to aggressive, but HIGH SCHOOL kids need better adults to teach them a little humility when they're way better than someone at something.
