He changed his look and tweaked his character a bit so he could be taken somewhat more seriously (even though he's admittedly still kinda goofy looking). I know that, and I know that Miz ended up getting really over. I'm just wondering what WWE saw in the dude that made them decide to give him a mega-push as the company's top heel before either of those two things happened. Really, why would you look at this: and think "This guy has a ton of potential as a main event talent"? "Beats me, bro."

"Beats me, bro." Different time period. That was the early 90's where everybody looked like a goof. Plus, even then, Michaels had undeniable athleticism and charisma. Miz had...gotten less shitty than he'd been a year or two prior?

I know it didn't main event but Lesnar vs Hardcore Holly. I can't imagine that selling many buys. Seriously was there no one else he could face? No one ever thought Hardcore was walking out with the strap.

Curtis Axel? Debuts and immediately gets thrown into the main event.

He stuck out like a sore thumb in 1997, always thought Shamrock should have got the September/October feud for Bret.

Mabel at least look like he could win just by being a 500 pound blob. Bob Holly is Bob Holly. Hey, Holly was 400 pounds according to him... No. He weighed WELL OVER 400 lbs.

I'm seeing a lot of these suggestions and they all have one thing in common: bad booking that made guys look like goobers. Let's look at The Miz as an example. The guy was a reality TV star and often portrayed as an interloper in the world of professional wrestling from the jump. Now, that could be an effective way of getting heat on him and that's okay to a certain extent. Well, Miz proved himself to be good on the mic and his tag team with John Morrison was very good and that all led to a singles push where he moved up the ladder to a main event level. Here's the thing: From a kayfabe perspective, a wrestler at the top of the card should be there because he merited it. He's there because he's earned it. So Miz wins the WWE Title through MitB, which is fine as it's a good way to build heat on the new champ and create some sympathy for the guy who just lost his, but then came the issues with Miz. The Miz, as champion and as a main eventer, was booked as an afterthought or worse the entire time he was champion. In building up John Cena vs. The Rock, he was window dressing even though HE WAS THE WORLD CHAMPION at the time. Here's what's so crazy and counterproductive: You've got Mike Mizanin as the WWE Champion and in the main event, but then you book him like a chump. So you've built up a guy and put the title on him for the sole purpose of making him look like he didn't belong at that level (Rey Mysterio was put in a similar position as champ). That is insane. Say what you will about whether or not Miz was deserving of a main event spot, but the fact is, he was given one and set up to fail. This. This times about a million. I wanna drag this quote up every time people crap on the Miz's main event run/overness.

RE: Bradshaw It wasn't that we didn't know about his financial prowess it's just that there wasn't a true heel turn. One week he's a beer-drinking, bar-fighting redneck who just happen to be a financial wiz. Heyman fired Ron Simmons and suddenly Bradshaw turns into JR Ewing the next week. They should have at least stretched the APA breakup a couple of weeks to build up instead of having a cold reboot Was a little more involved than that. He had the short hair and shaved face well before the APA broke up... and they talked about his finance background during that run on commentary. When Ron was fired he also had a proto-JBL thing saying he was a one man conglomerate, as the reason he didn't go with Ron when Ron asked him to walk out with him. and the GM (Heyman?) hyped up Bradshaw saying he only said that he was only firing Ron because Bradshaw was an asset.

Maybe not to you, but to me Miz is always the first name that comes to mind when thinking "why the Hell did that guy get a main event push?" Because despite revisionist history and the effect of terrible booking after the fact, the Miz was over as f*** from mid 09 until his title reign was completely sandbagged about a week in.

Miz eventually got "over as ****" but it's not like he automatically was as soon as he and Morrison split. The crowd loathing Miz came after WWE had spent a year giving him countless titles and feuds designed to get him over as a top heel. I just don't understand what they saw in the guy to put so much effort into him in the first place.

That's exactly my point. I think. It was no secret, even on screen, the Bradshaw had built up clout in the financial sector. He had appeared on Fox News (Fox Business?) several times and those times, if not hyped, were at least advertised. Time has fuzzied my memory but I know he was proto-JBL before the final APA reunion and while I can't prove it, I'm convinced he cleaned up look to make himself more credible on TV

Andrew "My urine has so much gas in it, it caught on fire" Martin in 2008 Andrew "Test" Martin left WWE in 2007, joined TNA the same year, took part in a doomsday chamber of blood match as part of a team taking on the Christian Coalition along with Abyss and Sting, and then got fired from TNA for being too jacked. He was never in the WWE for 2008. If its the push he got just before he left, well it was the ECW title so I would struggle to call it main event at that stage. And considering that Test was just the sort of guy Vince would put in the main event, its suprising that he wasn't pushed to the main event.
