It seems like they removed showing how much something weighs as well as how much it's worth, unless that's something that suddenly shows up later. Also, they removed showing you how irradiated a water source is, unless, again, it's something that suddenly shows up later. It's now in the menus- feels a little bit weird.

Played it for a bit today, 1st impressions are good.
The create a character is very in depth, the manufacturing is extensive and Codsworth is great.
Earlier someone asked about items weight which is there in the menus after you pick something up.
My only minor niggle is the construction of housing/settlement doesn't seem to have a tutorial so its a bit DIY.

Alright! Sorry I didn't get to it earlier. I originally intended to give the game a try right at the midnight launch but then Steam took forever unpacking it so I figured I might as well go to bed while it does that so I only got to play in the morning and then I had stuff to do. But I have played it now and I can give you my first impressions. Man, I am not disappointed! I really like pretty much everything I've seen so far. The detail in the character customization is insane (and indeed you can choose the body type as it uses a triangular slider with thin/muscular/large extremes similar to Saints Row's. As for performances, I don't know what's up with the console version but the PC version works fine. Granted I do use the lowest settings but if my over three-years-old laptop that wasn't even top of the line back when I bought it can handle it, I'm sure most of you guys' computers will have no problem with it. I think they really improved the combat. Gameplay-wise it's not too different from 3 and New Vegas but it feels faster paced and more intense than before. You can't just stand around and shoot any more, you really have to move around and use cover if you don't want to get killed and you can't just run around all willy-nilly without paying attention to whether there are enemies or not. Right after I left the vault, I went the wrong way, came across a a guy with a dog who I thought was just a random NPC, only for him to turn out to be a raider and by the time I scrambled to get my gun, he had shot me in the face and killed me. It should be noted that I'm playing in the "survival" difficulty which makes healing (from health items or food) much slower so again, you can't just go guns blazing and rely on stimpaks and molerat meat to carry you through the gunfight. All of this also means that VATS system is actually useful now! Seriously, in 3 and New Vegas, I almost never used it except maybe to locate enemies. For actual combat, I found doing it in real time was the best option. But here I actually find it helpful to catch enemies before they can take cover or get too close to you. Oh and the VATS system has also been made more challenging as it no longer downright stops time but merely slows it. The crafting system was also majorly improved. Again, it's something I almost never used in New Vegas as getting all the right ingredients to craft what you wanted could be a pain and often meant carrying around a ton of useless junk that just weighed you down and you needed pretty high skills to be able to craft anything useful. AND you often needed special perks. AND you often needed blueprints. Here, not only is everything useful to something, there are a lot of things that are easy to craft so right from the start you can find a use for the stuff you pick up and craft stuff you'd actually want to use. This makes it useful to create your own base just the way you want it as if it's lacking stuff you want, you can just craft it. Assuming you have the right elements, of course (or picked up an already built thing from somewhere else ) As you probably already know, armour is now made of independent pieces. Now, there are pieces of clothing that are a single outfit (such as the Vault suit) but most of it does come in various pieces and there are a lot of different slots which allow a lot of customizability. As far as the graphics go. Well, I'm using the lowest settings so I'm probably not the best person to talk about their full potential but I think it looks good. Nothing earth-shattering when it comes to 3D models or textures but frankly I'd rather have less fancy models that look good than super detailed ones that look boring. The animations are really good. They're more fluid and feel more natural than in the previous games. And as you may have noticed from trailers and screenshots, the characters actually have human faces now! Amazing! However what struck me most when it comes to the game's look is that I already find it very atmospheric. It's hard to really explain but it feels like the game's world has more... substance to it. The ruins are more detailed, there's more variety, there are small details like melted candles that show other Wastelanders went through the same locations as you. It feels more like those places were real towns and people lived there before the bombs fell. Even in wilder areas, it feels more like actual places. You see far more trees, be they dead or not and it actually gets really dark at night (and with the trees surrounding you like some kind of mangrove, it can actually get pretty creepy). There also seems to be more weather events as while I was exploring the remains of the starting town, fog started to show up. Paradoxically There are also a lot of little details I really like that add some icing on the cake, like fan-favourite songs from the previous games returning (such as "Butcher Pete", "Bingo Bango Bongo", "Crazy He Calls Me" and even "Maybe"). And that's about all I can think of to say for now. So yeah, I'm very happy with it. I'm still early in the game so I'll probably have more to say later. If you're waiting to buy it and want to ask questions to see if it's worth it to you or not, feel free to ask. And now, some screenshots (spoilered for size because this post is already long enough as it is): {Spoiler} My character and her husband. Instead of bringing up a menu, picking stuff from containers can now be done by selecting it directly from a list. You can still bring up a menu if you want, though. The building menu. Stuff like doors and fences automatically snap to appropriate locations when you bring them close enough. Lockpicking. Lockpicking never changes. As you can see, thrown weapons now have their own slot so you can equip them at the same time as your gun or melee weapon. You press a key to throw you thrown weapon. The weapons crafting menu. You can also disassemble weapons for parts. Notice the name at the top? This is because you can rename your weapons. That's the kind of little bonuses I really like. Note the little markings next to the stats, this compares the values to those of your currently equipped weapon.

Got my copy installing right now. From what I've seen from the perks, I'm going for an Agility/Intelligence run.

Right, I've just done the first few missions and here are my thoughts (no spoilers).
So far no bugs, glitches, framerate drops or CTD's. Everything is as smooth as silk and on ULTRA settings (although to be honest, if you drop it to minimum there is not much difference - blurry horizon is about it). You can drop things like Godrays and TXAA down with no difference at all to the look of the game. Compared to Fallout 3 and especially New Vegas I'm having an easy time of it, technology-wise.
Couple of annoying things - no FOV slider (although you can sort this out in the .ini files - just annoying you have to do it in this day and age) and the FOV defaults to 70. And strangely enough no Gamma controls. Very strange that.
To be honest, don't mind the voiced protagonist. It gives everyone who bitched when Fallout 3 came out something new to bitch about I suppose.
I like the new perks and traits system - very easy to understand and get used to.
Crafting system is great, much more in depth than it used to be. Not really tried the 'build a town bit' - been exploring.
Finally, if anyone knows the RGB settings for a nice orange glow for my Pip-Boy HUD I'd love to know it, been mucking about with that for ages...

When I started, my SPECIAL was:
4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 3, 4
I've since increased INT by 1 and PER by 2 (by way of level up and bobblehead).

I.....need.....more....adhesives. Seriously I think I've done more crafting in this game than shooting things lol. I am in love with this game. About 12-15 hours in and just got to Diamond City. Taking things nice and slow.

Why did they think it was a good idea to remove waiting?
EDIT: Also, after playing for a few hours, the new dialogue system is complete ass. I'd be enjoying myself 100% more with the older system. And making speech checks rely on chance instead of skill is ridiculous and a step backwards. A lot of stuff is a step back. There's still plenty of fun to be had but so many decisions leave me scratching my head.

You can name your weapons? Sweet. hadn't noticed you could do that yet, I'm so naming a pistol "Winona" You can rename armour as well. In fact, I'm pretty sure you can rename anything you can craft. Are not conversation checks based on charisma plus whatever stat the speech involves plus perks ? Pretty sure they are, yeah. The checks only rely on chance if your stats aren't high enough. Me, I have mixed feelings about the dialogue system. On the one hand, it does seem somewhat streamlined so you don't get lost in a labyrinth of dialogue options and I like the way the options are not as specific as in 3 and New Vegas so you feel like you can actually roleplay more but on the other hand, it sometimes feels like it's overly simplified, especially since I sometimes feel like your choices are basically between three sympathetic answers and one "ridiculous asshole" answer. On a different note, I can't stress enough how much tougher the combat is. I've just been killed by a group of molerats. MOLERATS. Even in the first two games, those were the "aim at it and watch it explode" type of enemies. To be fair, there was like twenty of them (it was at that landfill mound under the bridge, I forgot the exact name) and as I mentioned earlier, i'm playing in "Survival" difficulty but it goes to show that in this game, you shouldn't underestimate the enemies, it really does sell the idea that this is a dangerous and hostile land. And yet it doesn't feel cheap. At no point do I go "Dammit, the game screwed me!". It really feels like the outcome of a fight relies more on your skills than on mathematical equations. Of course, higher skills still means more efficient attacks but I never liked how in 3 and NV, you could repeatedly shoot a raider between the eyes but if the stats say it's not a kill shot, then it's not a kill shot. It could be frustrating to actually put effort into being a skilled fighter only for it to barely matter. Plus I find it nice that now you really feel like you're fighting for your life and it makes it all the more satisfying to prevail. Still with there was at least an option to have the companions be killable because as much as I love Dogmeat, it feels a bit cheap to only have them knocked out. Also, I find that preparation matters a lot. You can improve both your defence and your firepower a lot from crafting and improving your weapons and armour and when you make it to a new area, you might want to scout around from a safe point to check for enemies and possible cover. And finally, to anyone who has seen some ghouls, do you agree that they look genuinely freaky? Probably doesn't help that the first time I came across some feral ghouls, it was during a foggy weather so I could only see vague outlines in the distance at first so I thought maybe they were NPCs and by the time I got closer, they started charging me. It added to the creepy horror feel.

What did folks start off with as a SPECIAL? I did 4, 4, 4, 3, 6, 6, 1. I'm thinking of going back and putting more points into Charisma though. Strength 3 Perception 4 Endurance 5 Charisma 1 Intelligence 5 Agility 6 Luck 4

It added to the creepy horror feel. I agree completely. This is the first Fallout game that I've played so I wasn't expecting those things to appear. I was in Lexington in the Super Duper Mart and it felt like something out of a horror movie, especially when some of them started crawling out of the windows. Those things are also agile as hell, which adds more to the creep factor.
