I want to like Buff. I liked playing as him on the n64 wcw games. I admit that he killed his own career by stinking up the joint with Booker T and having his mom call Jim Ross to let him know that he couldn't go to the shows.
I think he redemeed himself when he did the Canadian destroyer.
That being said, Bagwell is delusional

He's right, in that they were both in the same line of entertainment work, are men, live in the United States and are Earthlings

A lot of the people here pretending that Bagwell was never a big deal clearly never watched a lot of WCW. Bagwell was incredibly over at one point, not to the point that he'd surpass The Rock but he did have massive arenas all cheering him and chanting his name, he wasn't some schlub who was in WCW for 20 seconds and never had one fan. Buff is neck-and-neck with Jeff Jarrett in the "greatest disparity between the size of one's ego and the level of one's actual accomplishments" award. Jeff Jarrett's actual accomplishments: - 4 time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 6 time NWA World Heavyweight Champion all whilst these companies were on international television and PPV. He's also a 2 time WWA World Heavyweight Champion who were relying on the guy to sell Pay Per Views. He also was AAA Mega Champion which is the top title in Mexico and held countless territory titles before he reached national level. - Is a 6 time Intercontinental Champion and a 3 time United States Champion which meant a whole lot more when he won them than they do today. - Was the co-founder of what some consider the number 2 company in the world today. Regardless of how you feel about TNA it's a huge accomplishment that the company he founded is still around today even if it is a massive shell of it's former self. - Has wrestled some of the biggest stars in wrestling such as Austin, Rock, Goldberg, Sting, Angle, Nash, Hall, Michaels, Triple H, Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Hogan, Undertaker, Flair, Foley, Piper, Styles and pretty much everyone else except modern top stars such as Bryan Danielson, Cena, CM Punk, Lesnar etc. - Has been a member of some of wrestling's top groups such as The Four Horsemen and the nWo. - Has headlined shows around the world in prominent main event spots. On top of this I've seen tons of interviews from him and he doesn't seem to be all that egotistical.

He was over, but damn near everyone in that era was over. That was actually part of his point, and he's correct there.
But to assert that he was EVER near the Rock's level once he became THE ROCK is just kinda laughable.

I get where he's coming from. Around the time of his neck injury, he and Nation Rock were in the same...zip code. For the statement he made, and the time frame he's talking about, the more ludicrous statement is comparing himself to Austin.

A case can be made that Bagwell had a big hand in effectively killing WCW in that tryout WCW match that they had on TV. Granted, I don't think WCW ever had a chance as a separate brand on WWE TV, but I don't think it was because of Booker T, Arn, or even Scott Hudson.

To add a serious statement I guess it depends on when he means I guess... since pretty much the entirety of the Rock's run was the 90's... and yeah he was at least as over as Blue chipper and maybe when he first turned? If he means like when he was what most people refer to when they say "THE ROCK" hell no. I suppose Buff Bagwell was more over than the Rock for most of 1997, when he was the really cocky ass hat who turned on his tag team partner as soon as the nWo was taking in guys from the WCW roster while Rocky Maivia was floundering as a 70s babyface stuck in the late 90s. But, anyone who thinks Bagwell was anywhere close to Rock after that is forgetting how quickly things turned around for Rocky as soon as he joined the Nation. Dude IMMEDIATELY got white hot as a heel as soon as he embraced the hate from the fans. The Shamrock feud started in November of 1997 and eclipsed anything Bagwell did as a rank and file nWo member until he started associating with Steiner (and by the time that happened, Rock was in the next universe), to say nothing of his short feud with Austin over the IC title. Again, the stuff with Austin forfeiting the IC title to Rock only to throw it off a bridge the next week trumps anything Bagwell did in his career.
