In the late 90's I was in the early years of elementary school. I was closer to being equal to Buff Bagwell, than Buff being equal to The Rock.

I could put a live jellyfish on my head, and declare that I'm the Mayor of the Ocean, but that doesn't make it true.

the thing is I absolutely believe that Buff believes that.
It is demonstrably false but I don't doubt that he thinks that it's true.

Maybe in 97. But by that logic, Jose Lothario was more famous than Hogan in the late 70s.

Buff: My finisher is called the Buff Blockbuster. I bet you're jealous. Rock: I star in summer blockbusters.

He was over, but damn near everyone in that era was over. That was actually part of his point, and he's correct there. But to assert that he was EVER near the Rock's level once he became THE ROCK is just kinda laughable. I think this is an important point. Almost everyone was over in that era WCW. Those fans would cheer anyone that had one cool move or one interesting taunt/dance/quirk. Hell, when Norman Smiley would tease doing the Big Wiggle, he would get pops new those The Rock got when he would pull of his elbow pad for the people's elbow. Buff was over, but there were probably 20 guys in that WCW Midcard that were at an equal level. And those guys weren't as over as Goldberg or the Outsiders or Sting or even the Horsemen.

OK lets settle this:)
Pop for Buff at being mentioned on RAW: Just search RAW 26/03/2001 Сегмент Винса и Шейна (часть 2) on YT and go to 0:35
Third biggest pop right after Stenier and Goldberg if you ask me.

Did The Rock have his own credit card? I think not! Case closed. This came up looking to see if a Rock credit card exists. I think Rock wins.

This topic is such trollbait, but I'll bite. Buff's exact quote was "I was as big as anybody else. I was equal to the Rock. We were dead even, but then I broke my neck."
Bagwell's neck injury happened in April of 1998. The Rock debuted with WWF in November of 1996. Coincidentally, November 1996 was also the same month Bagwell joined the nWo. So at the time of Bagwell's injury, The Rock had only been on TV for about 15 months. Bagwell had been with WCW 7 years up to that point. In April 1998, The Rock has just overtaken Farooq as the leader of the Nation of Domination and was in the middle of a 265 day Intercontinental title run - his second IC title run with WWF. The Rock's big breakout year was just getting started, culminating with his first world title win later that year. Bagwell meanwhile, was a 3-time former WCW tag team champion, but he hadn't seen that title since 2005 when he was an American Male. He really wasn't anything more than a lackey with the nWo since joining with them.
For what it's worth, the PWI 500 from 1997 ranks Bagwell #89 overall and The Rock (still listed as Rocky Maivia) at #103. The 1998 PWI 500 saw Rock shoot up to number #11 while Bagwell slipped to #174. Maybe in some people's minds you can say Rock and Bagwell were on the same level in April in 1998 based on that. I highly doubt Bagwell's injury prevented him from staying at the same level with the Rock though. Rock was well on his way to superstardom and Bagwell was headed for mediocrity and obscurity neck injury or not.

One pop from a WWF crowd DOES NOT equal "as over as the Rock". Hell, I'm sure I could pull up video footage of Scotty 2 Hotty getting a huge pop doing the Worm. Doesn't mean he's as popular as the Rock.

I know you are all laughing at him based on the topic title, but he doesn't say anything wrong there at all, in fact everything he says makes a lot of sense.
He was equal to the Rock pretty much at that time frame and he admits everyone overtook him.
The thread title is basically done to make Buff seem like a laughing stock, but yeah Buff was equal to the Rock in a lot of the years in the 90's. 99 and late 98? No. Overall? No. But the rest? Yeah, sure.

I'm not arguing that Buff was big as Rock is today, I'm not defending Buff here but I am going against history revisions where somehow WWE in 1997/98 was already a better product than WCW which is not true. WWE at the time looked like an indy show compared to WCW and besides Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and Stone Cold none were over as nWo guys were. Yet somehow in this thread Rock is some kind of benchmark of being over in 97/98, which again is not true at all.

Buff was over, no doubt, but was he over because he was Buff Bagwell, or was he over because he was in the NWO?

Buff was over, no doubt, but was he over because he was Buff Bagwell, or was he over because he was in the NWO? Little of both, I mean, being in the nWo didn't exactly help guys like Stevie Ray, Brian Adams etc. He was a good chickenshit, self absorbed heel, everyone wanted to smack him in the mouth.
