If the exit polls are accurate May has a huge bit of egg on her face. Bit of egg? It's a 4-egg omlette with cheese Oh yeah. From projected landslide to a hung Parliment in 8 weeks is a quite an accomplishment.

How long is a PM's term, usually before there's another general election for Parliament? IIRC, Cameron's resignation post-Brexit threw a wrench into usual proceedings. It used to be that the prime minister could call an election whenever they wanted during a set period (I think it was between 4 and 5 years in to their term or something like that) David Cameron's coalition government with the liberal democrats brought in the fixed term parliament act meaning that the election was every 5 years which in theory was brought in to ensure that in the future the prime minister wouldn't have the advantage of being able to call an election at the most opportune time ie when they had a high approval rating. The fixed term act did have a clause though that an election can be called anytime as long as 2/3rds of the house agrees to it by voting for it, so May called an election when she had a 20 point lead and of course it would be political suicide to vote against having an election so most of labour voted for it thus rendering the fixed term act completely pointless (it actually created a worse situation to the one it was supposedly trying to address as now a pm can call an election whenever the hell they want whereas before it was only during the set time frame)

Could be a disaster for Theresa May. All I will say is that it looks like she gambled but didn't realize she was using exploding dice

Another question, since here in the US we with more than two parties at the same time. Is it possible for the parties that didn't get a plurality to form their own majority coalition in spite of the plurality-winning party? Yes. If they can reach a coalition of 326 they are free to form a government.

So how similar is this to elections in the US? Like is a prime Minster the exact same as a president or not? I tried to look it up but got confused. - The UK is divided into 650 parliamentary constituencies with each represented by a single MP elected by the first-past-the-post system. - They serve in the House of Commons, the lower house of the British Parliament. The biggest party forms the Government, with the leader of the party (who is a MP him/herself becoming Prime Minister. The Cabinet is also made up of MP's. - The second largest party in the House of Commons becomes the Opposition, with the leader of the party becoming Leader of the Opposition, and forming a Shadow Cabinet of MP's. - 326 seats are required to form a majority in the House of Commons. If the largest party in the House of Commons is still not large enough to form a majority, a coalition of parties can be formed. - The Prime Minister is the head of government for the United Kingdom, serving as a representative of the Queen. The Queen remains head of state. In a presidential system, a president is head of state, and sometimes head of government too, like in the US system. - If an election ends in a tie, the Queen may decree that the issue be settled by the ancient manner of the sword. Five years hence, lest ye be overthrown by treachery. So what do the House of Lords exactly do in the modern-day system?

Have the Stark Raving Mad Looney Party one a consistency yet? There's so many possible punchlines here which should probably be avoided for the sake of civility.

So a little less than a year after voting to leave the EU, the UK is on the verge of a hung parliament, which will make negotiating an exit just that much harder.
The Schadenfreude lover in me is enjoying this. As is the leader of the country that invented the term, Angela Merkel.
