That's not the match it would have been 20 years ago or even was when it happened at Starrcade, but the sheer crowd hype for that match is going to elevate it into the something special.

My favourite thing about getting Rey on the show was that there was literally no reason to do it outside of just because. The show's sold out with no real matches announced yet. There's more matches confirmed for the Australia tour.
Also that Rey essentially used WWE to get awareness on him and then signed officially with NJPW for this show which...major props to the guy.

Yeah, it's crazy they're using Rey like this when the show sold out in minutes. Like obviously they're not going to put on a four hour iron man match of Yoshi-Hashi against everyone's patience, but Rey doesn't come cheap and they don't really need outsiders to make the show big. Still super cool they're doing it, but it's curious to see their strategy here.

They have the live audience already but they want to see who they can grab for curiosity sake to start watching the product, especially if they can get a smidge of the hispanic crowd watching or people who were watching during the Monday Night Wars and seeing Rey there. It might not be the same way it'll be for Jericho's announcement but if you already have Jericho for the show anyway (most likely against Naito), you might as well see who else you can grab audience wise.

Yeah, agreed that it's probably a TV-centric move; being able to run commercials on Axs hyping the top NJPW guys as well as Jericho and Mysterio should turn some heads. Plus, I figure it's also a solid way to keep building goodwill in the US west coast market; if/when they come back either this or next year and potentially want to run a 10,000+ seat venue, fans will remember gestures like this. I know Rey/Liger won't be the match it would've been in the late 90s, but I fully admit to marking out when Rey laid the challenge down.

Maybe not the match it could have been but honestly Liger isn't totally broken down and Rey looked better at the Rumble than he has in goddamn forever. it could still be a f***ing blast.

Even some of Rey’s matches last year showed he can still go if in the right environment, it’ll at the least be really fun.

Walter Pyramid in Long Beach? Wait, is that the CSULB pyramid? I went to that school. Damn, had I made the connection, I would have gotten tickets. I still live not that far from campus. I can't imaging going there for Wrestling. I park in the structure right next to it. Managed to grab tickets, and it's a trip seeing an NJPW venue twice a week. Can't wait.

That’s an amazing announcement. I’m quite hype for Rey vs Liger.

Judging from Rey's work in Lucha Underground and Liger in last year's BOSJ, they can both still put on a good match. Liger is a little more limited, but he can still do quite a bit and can tell a fantastic story. Should be a damn fun match. I'm guessing Taichi/Naito will be there as well. I don't think we are getting anything "mind blowing", but this card should be entertaining.

It's also a smart move to add value to this show, even though it's sold out.... to make the demand for their NEXT show there, in a larger facility, even greater. "They always have big attractions."

After seeing Rey in the Rumble, I'm actually super excited for the match. I can't remember the last time I was actually excited for a Mysterio match.

Neither one of them are going to be at their peak, but they've both become more versatile wrestlers on the ground over the years. One of my favorite Rey matches was against Eddie Guerrero on Smackdown in 2005, and it was a fun back-and-forth where Rey didn't do much flying. Likewise with Liger, he had a match against Yoshinobu Kanemaru where Liger isn't bouncing around, he just suplexes and powerbombs the crap out of the guy.

I can't recall if Rey's ever worked with Liger before. Obviously, he had many a WAR (I made a funny) with Ultimo Dragon, so he's tangled with Japanese legends before, but I can't remember seeing Rey and Liger be a thing. Wouldn't be surprised if they got Rey at a reasonable rate to allow him to check that off.

Is that Jericho/Naito match confirmed? Naito vs. Taichi sounds like a sick joke to play on the Long Beach faithful. I will say that I enjoy how NJPW books the goof characters more than in WWE. Guys like Taicho or Yano get the occasional push or some screen time but overall they are jobber fools that aren't on TV all the time. WWE features comedy acts every single week all over TV and it just beats them into the ground.
What exactly is Omega doing at the Strong Style show?

Taichi vs Naito is happening at the anniversary show. Naito/Jericho appears most likely for Evolved
