If I didn't know any better I'd say they're working on "cleaning the slate" for something radically different in the next trilogy.
No not Vong. The Vong sucked.
I will add this: Rey "FEELING" the Force with Luke was Grade A Comedy. That was great shit. That's the kind of jedi trolling Yoda would be proud of.

I enjoyed it, although probably not as much as TFA. The emotional and funny moments really clicked for me, and the twists were, well, surprising.

I feel like part of the problem may have been doing too much in too short of a time (yes, even with 2.5 hours).
1: Rey and Luke
2: Rey and Kylo
3: Kylo and the First Order
4: The First Order and the Resistance
5: Finn and Rose
6: The culmination where all that comes together.

Was really good. Not sure how I feel about some things like Snoke. Second viewimg will help.
Feels like this is really trying to end the Solo-Skywalker part of the mythos and move forward once Ben is defeated.
GLAD Rey's parents are non-descript. I wanted it to be that way. Lends credence to everyone being able to access the Force etc.
Poe Dameron has become my favorite character in this set.

Oh, oh. I just realized one more Empire Strikes Back similarity. In lieu of a Death Star, Vader flew around on the Executor. This time, without Starkiller Base, we got Snoke's big ass ship and the Dreadnought.
If only there was a big ship in Attack of the Clones

I caught this for a midnight showing. Force Awakens gave me so much hope for this new trilogy. Last Jedi took some of that hope away. It had some great moments but overall it’s kind of a mess.
I’m so tired of the attempts to go for a cheap pop. There are so many forced one liners. It’s kind of like when wrestling fans get annoyed by a couple of high flyers just trying to get their spots in without any real psychology to have it all come together. They want to create some memorable moments but at the expense of the entire presentation. It does more damage than good. I like the casual humor. For example, Leia getting upset with Poe and telling him he can’t just hop into a ship and blow things up. Then the first order shows up and he asks for permission to hop into a ship and blow things up and she lets him. That felt natural and unforced. You can feel their chemistry in that moment.
Going into this movie I was concerned about the porg. They way they were being marketed in advertising made them look like the second coming of the Ewoks or something. I had absolutely no problem with them. They had a couple brief appearances and that was just enough. Didn’t really understand them guilting Chewbacca over eating one. It was already killed, skinned and cooked. The porg should’ve been more horrified by that, but I get that it was just another comedy spot.
I didn’t like Kylo breaking his helmet and abandoning his Darth Vader type character. I thought it was a cool part of his persona. I get why it happened. Snoke mocked him and he had to show he was his own man. Force Awakens went out of its way to keep Snoke kind of hidden as a hologram until this movie and then they just kill him off in his gold Hugh Hefner bathrobe looking like the love child of the Emperor and Sloth from the Goonies. Again, I get why it happened, but it felt too soon. Kylo was tired of being under his control and being talked down to. He wanted to take control and he did. I was a big fan of the fight with the royal guards. Heard a theory they could be the students Kylo took with him. Idk. They looked awesome and I liked all their unique weapons.
I’m on the fence with the way Leia survived the attack on her ship. I get that she’s never been seen using the force even though it’s strong with her. I guess it made sense to have it save her but it just felt like one of those miracle spots that’s overdone these days. I really did enjoy her in the movie. I am glad we got to see more of her. Especially since it’s her last role. The tease with Kylo being the one to pull the trigger was well done too.
I wasn’t thrilled with the bad CGI going on during the whole casino adventure and the beasts forced into some kind of horse racing gimmick. I was ok with Benecio Del Toro’s character. Finn and Rose met him in casino jail. He’s obviously a sleazy guy out for himself. I thought he played the role well. The little hammered alien trying to use BB8 as a slot machine with a few coins was kind of funny but then BB8 attacking the guards with what seemed like hundreds of coins was ridiculous.
I was fine with Phasma getting knocked off. She was never going to have a competitive fight with Rey in the future anyway. Her story was with Finn, so it made sense that it ended with him. BB8 getting into an AT-ST was funny but didn’t really seem possible. Idk. This movie stretched to make the impossible become possible at times.
The dreadnaught being brought down was great. Rose’s sister gave that feeling that the good guys don’t always win without sacrifice. It gave you that feeling of war. You could feel the highs and lows there.
Laura Dern’s character was icy. She came off like one of those bosses with a do as I say and don’t question me type of attitude. She’s not going to tell you what’s going on because you’re beneath her and she doesn’t have to. She almost seems to have her own agenda but her spectacular sacrifice redeemed her.
The Yoda spot had me confused. Luke wants to burn the tree and the books. He hesitates so Yoda does it. Now Luke is upset when he was going to do it anyway. Huh? Insert Yoda jokes about the books being a boring read. Mixed feelings here. Kind of cool to see classic Yoda but felt too silly at the same time.
Thought they were reaching making a big deal out of the dice from the millennium falcon with Luke and Leia. I just wasn’t feeling the moment. I thought they were reaching with the Leia message from R2 to Luke because it felt like fan service, but it got Luke to come back so it works.
The Luke / Rey interactions were fun. Broken Luke worked for the most part. I loved when he showed up to save the day. I started to think they went too far with him surviving the walker attack. Then I was confused when he pulled out the blue lightsaber that had been destroyed. I expected it to be green this time. Then I got nervous when he delivered the strike me down line. The projection swerve was great though. It’s too bad it killed Luke but I get that he wanted to be at peace. I’m just having a hard time enjoying these movies where they insist on killing off my childhood heroes in every one of them. They keep killing off people to pass the torch to Rey and Kylo and put all the focus on them but it’s all being done to get to the third and final movie. Why not have more feel good moments with the classic characters remaining in supporting roles instead? Idk. I get they want to wrap up their stories but it’s so depressing to me.
TL;DR: My overall takeaway was that there were far too many forced attempts at humor. Some terrible CGI. Some confusing moments and a few great moments. Fun at times, but so messy too.

Luke pretty well became Obi wan at the end of New Hope, sacrificing himself so the Rebellion could live.

Begin with protagonists trying to escape from bad guys into space after base is discovered. Character goes off to train with reluctant master. Reluctant master convinced to help by force ghost jedi. Evil cave. Ice (Salt) planet trench/speeder/walker fight. Light speed options nullified. Characters get sold out by new ally. "Join me and we can rule the galaxy together." Character's parentage is revealed to disappointment.

Maybe I’m just old, but not a fan of killing off the original cast. Couldn’t they have written Han and Luke out some other way?

The only thing that really halted my enjoyment during the film was the Leia scene. I know she has the force but it felt so weird and looked off. But other than that I'd give it an 8.5.

Maybe I’m just old, but not a fan of killing off the original cast. Couldn’t they have written Han and Luke out some other way? I really wish Holdo and Leia changed spots at the end. Taking out a fleet would be a good way for the old princess to leave us. The theme of the movie seemed to be "The old guard's end" on both sides. Actually feels odd for Leia to live. I fully believe Ep9 will begin with her funeral/mourning and that combined with their "spark" will light the fire. That line about using Leia's personal code needs to bring somebody/something from the past back. Even if it's just a Calrissian sending support for an old family friend. Or a Hutt that's thankful for her assassination of Jabba. A good part of me wanted to see those final rebel soldiers stumble upon a deactivated droid army/factory/shipyard for the final battle. Then you take it full circle, the new rebels using sepertist equipment to hold off the final assault of the empire. It would be basically all the sides of the previous movies engaged in a final "killing" of the old guard.

I liked basically everything that had to with the Force aspect of the story. Luke, Rey, Yoda, Kylo, Snoke and his bad-ass guards that make the Emperor's Royal Guards look like losers. I loved it. Though I do declare that Snoke is an idiot for basically having the same thing happen to him that happened to the Emperor. Seems dumb seeing as how he apparently knew what had happened to Palpatine.Guess that's the Dark Side for you.
Leia using for Force was cool.
Luke seemingly surviving all those cannon blasts was like something out of Dragonball Z. Loved it.
My issues with the film have to do with the resistance/First order aspect of the story.
The whole thing with the Resistance just coasting along with the First Order following them/firing at them for half the movie but the First Order couldn't get past their shields? That bugged me. How powerful are shields in the Star Wars universe? Like if in ROTJ, the Star Destroyers had attacked the Rebel ships (instead of the Death Star) would they have been firing at them for days before being able to destroy them? Has there been that big of an advancement in shield technology sense then? Why was Hux ignorant of this? Seems like the whole idea threw a wrench into the gears of every past Star Wars movie.
I also admit to not understanding how it was the First Order was tracking them in the first place. Guess I missed the explanation.
Then there was the mutiny sub-plot. Looked as if this Vice Admiral was going to be a villain but she is really good after all. Guess they just needed something for those characters to do while other stuff was going on. And why is it that the high ranking Resistance women don't have to wear uniforms? Mon Mothma start that trend?
My biggest complaint though was with the gambling planet.
1. felt there was too much CG/goofy alien characters. I get it that they are filthy rich but did everybody have to look like Mr. Monopoly?
2. The abused horse creates and little kids. I felt like i was watching Oliver Twist or something. Really took me out of the movie.
3. I was annoyed that the gambler they were looking for wasn't Lando. Where was the Lando I was promised?
Also while I'm bitching I felt like Maz was sort of shoe-horned in. How did they even know how to contact her again? I thought she was Han and Chewie's friend? They weren't there.
Lastly there was the ending. Did we have to see those kids again? I felt like I was watching the prequels. And YES it did feel like it was a commercial or something. To me it has got to be the worst ending in a Star Wars movie.
Minor complaint is that Nein Numb seemed to be MIA for most of the movie. He was there. Then he was gone. I figured he must have been killed but then he was there again at the end. Speaking of Nein Numb this guy should be considered a huge hero. He destroyed the second Death Star and Starkiller Base! That makes him a bigger hero than Luke when you think about it.

That line about using Leia's personal code needs to bring somebody/something from the past back. Even if it's just a Calrissian sending support for an old family friend. Or a Hutt that's thankful for her assassination of Jabba. Nice observation. Now I'm wondering if that'll play a role in Episode IX. But you're correct that it would've been a good way to bring in Lando. I also admit to not understanding how it was the First Order was tracking them in the first place. Guess I missed the explanation. My biggest complaint though was with the gambling planet. Yeah, I was disappointed that the explanation for the tracking was simple technology instead of having a spy on board with the rebels, or something like that. And it seems like the majority of my gripes can be traced to the gambling planet, including the final shot of the kid. Did anyone have any bad feelings about this? I checked around the internet and it appears no one had a bad feeling, nor was there a wilhelm scream.

Well, that wasn't very good.
Better than Episode VII, but I am done paying money to see them just killing off the old and bringing in the new.
I didn't need to see Luke die. What a way to go out. You save the Galaxy, you save the Galaxy, you save the Galaxy, you save the Galaxy...guess what? Evil still wins.

Was the only lightsaber on lightsaber action the brief moments in the Luke-Ben flashbacks? I know they sort of had a duel at the end but I don’t think Luke and Bens sabers connected?

In the vein of that question... how many people ate a lethal blaster shot from a non-vehicle?
Rose shot Phasma but the armor handled it. Some Resistance fighters stunned eachother... but I can't recall if a single soldier got shot and killed unless it involved a vehicle.
It's also quite possible my mind is shitty and I'm completely forgetting something obvious. I'm thinking this would be the first episode without somebody directly shooting and killing somebody else.
