Just another week in the US sadly; there has been 18 school shootings in the US this year which is an unfathomable amount when the year is only 6 and a half weeks in [sarcasm] But hey, we haven't had that many major celebrity deaths, right? [/sarcasm]

What makes me equally as upset is that while interviewing a student, she said that once the alarm was pulled and people realized what was going on, she said kids were on their phones snapchatting. Like, how f***ing stupid can you be? How many people died at Pulse nightclub because they had to post on social media instead of getting to safety? That makes me just as sick, that people value "likes" over lives. I think that’s a pretty gross mischaracterizarion of what happened at both events.

Sounds like the shooter had warning signs. Carried guns and whatnot. A student just said on CNN " he showed us his guns and everybody predicted it"
SPEAK UP PEOPLE

It's almost as if we're doing something fundamentally different to America isn't it? I Cant quite put my finger on what we are doing differently though

At my old job, there was a dude was off to say the least, made threats, live streams, a "list" of fellow employees, and was just overall a weird dude. Several people reported him at BOTH theme parks he worked at, and neither could do anything due to "lack of proof", dunno if this is the same kinda situation but it sounds like the warning signs were there.

As sad as it is, it'll be forgotten in a week and another incident will occur and another and so on. Nothing's going to change.

There's a lot of other factors that go into these events. I'm not condoning it, just saying

Even if you think you're helping by recording the event, get the hell out of there or get moving. With everybody having phones these days, you would hope that people were calling the cops or their parents instead of looking for something to post on facebook.

A student just said on CNN " he showed us his guns and everybody predicted it" SPEAK UP PEOPLE When I was younger, elementary school age, a kid told me, that he was going to shoot me, one day. I was so scared, all I would do is cry. The teacher found out about it, because I spoke up about it (he told me I wasn't safe at school, or at home). It turned out, that he had guns in his house, because the grandfather was a cop, and lived with the family. The kid had no issues with me, in particular, but used me because I was the shortest (weakest) one in class. I do offer thoughts and prayers to the families, even though it doesn't fix the problem, they know that we are hurting with them.

If you’re asserting that people were sitting there snapchatting amidst the gunfire, I don’t think that was the case at all. The Pulse shooter held hostages who had access to their phone. At my school the lock down drill required everyone to get into a locked classroom ASAP and stay quiet until the police cleared the situation, and I bet it was the same here. In both cases I think their use of social media was much more to say “if I don’t make it, goodbye” rather than “active shooting situation! YOLO, amirite?”

Apparently the suspect was a kid who was expelled from that same school

And people also found out about the shooting through facebook and twitter posts. I'm just saying that there are people who do try to document the action like they're a photojournalist in a war zone. If you can get out and get to safety, do it.

This has to hurt so much for the family of this asshole. If you've ever watched "We Need To Talk About Kevin", they sadly have to deal with this crap in silence while their kid gets all the media attention while being in prison.
That's not to say the victims and their families don't suffer, but we almost always got to remember that the family of this s***head suffers as well, wondering where their parenting went wrong because sometimes, they did nothing and their kid is just bad.

I had a kid in high school threaten me and my friends because my buddy liked a girl he liked. He also talked about pulling the fire alarm and having his friends shoot as the school evacuated.
We told the principal, the kid got expelled. Simple as that. He knew we were the ones who told too. Sad thing is, we had friends, mostly girls, who defended this asshole. Because he was "different." Yeah, he was different, he was a god damn psychopath and potential murderer.
I just want this to stop. But again, I'm sure we'll only get more thoughts and prayers and zero actions.

I read up on the Pulse shooting a while back and the only social media stuff I recall is the nightclub posting on social media for people to get out and keep running, and snapchats/messages from the hostages in the bathroom begging for help. It was the stuff of nightmares, reading about people who tried to hide and ended up trapped in a tiny room with their killer and no way out.

People offer thoughts and prayers, as a way of saying that we are hurting along with them. I understand that we don't have the same feeling of hurt as they do, but it is a way to show compassion to the families.

Its pretty sad that I look at this and I already know how this will be treated, as cynical as it may appear.
Thoughts and prayers will be offered, bickering will occur on both sides, and nothing of substance will happen. Just like every other time. If having a bunch of first-graders being mowed down in cold blood 11 days before Christmas did nothing, if seeing parents having to bury their children during the holidays did nothing, this will be no different. And we shouldn't kid ourselves otherwise.
