I've never understood this little sub culture in the WWE. Why are people frowned upon when they act as fans.
AJ Lee. JTG. Freddy Prince Jr.
JTG for example:
"I made a lot of rookie mistakes. I'll give you one story real quick, So how I avoided heat... So when I was up there every wrestler whether they want to admit it or not, their are a mark. They are fans deep down inside but they just have the courage to go after their dream. So I… I was still a fan and I had a Bret Hart screen saver on my phone, I'm a big Bret Hart fam as you can see if you read the book. And when I opened my phone in the locker room, my buddy, Shelton Benjamin, he saw that. He was like, "J what the hell you are doing?" I'm like, "what I do now? Like what?" He was like "What the hell is that on your phone?" I said it is a Bret Hart screen saver. He's like, "I understand you like Bret Hart but you can't have that here while you on the road. You can't be acting like a mark, you get heat for that." I was like damn but okay. And I changed it to like a Ferrari or something. Like you don't want to be caught being a mark. That's the derogatory term for die-hard fan."

How weird would that be in real sports? "You're a mark for Bret Favre? Don't let anyone know!"

It's so stupid. What truly matters to me is if someone entertains me or not, but shitting on another wrestler because they actually enjoy the goofy business they're in is lame.
I remember how pathetic it was when Meltzer shit on AJ Lee just because she got a tattoo .

I suppose it fits in with the con nature of the history of the business. Look at the disdain for fans etc; I mean 'mark' comes from the carnival days after all.

A couple weeks back Curt Hawkins was on Sam Roberts' show talking about how guys like him kept their wrestling figure collecting secret from the old timers for this kind of reason.

So let me get this straight. Old timer, dog the supposed "marks" who BUY their figures and put MONEY in their pockets? Because they are fans? How stupid are some of these people? "Hey mang, I know you are a MARK, stop being a MARK man...." "Buy my figure but don't be a MARK". Idiots...

Ya gotta look at it for how insular a community it was for decades previously, to where anyone outside really was outside. Again, a lot of that comes from the carnival mentality of fleecing the marks/rubes out of their money. So you wouldn't want to be seen on that level. It's an outdated concept, but I'm sure that's where it comes from.

It’s like this on Indy’s to. The amount of shit I get because I’d wear a WWE shirt backstage before a show is absurd.

Carny politics, probably.
You have to earn the right to be passionate about your job, or whatever. It's why they fawn over Taker's while he's allowed to "play his character" out in public. Yet others are shamed for having the gall to show passion for their work.

This is the stupidest thing ever, and the fact that it exists on a local indy level is infinitely stupider.
Imagine this line of thinking in literally any other line of work. An actor who can't admire past stars, a musician who can't admit to liking other bands, a doctor who has to pretend science is for nerds.
It's just absolutely dumb as hell and one of the carny aspects of the business that needs to die as soon as possible.

That's hilarious. Why? Because some of the biggest f***ing marks run the company or in high positions!

Scott Hall once said in the interview that Goldberg was a mark for himself. He also said that if Vince finds out that you are a mark for yourself, he'll have you jobbing every night.

I hope Scott was being sarcastic because if not that’s an incredibly dumb statement cause in the history of Pro wrestling usually the biggest stars are the biggest marks for themselves Hogan,Dusty,Flair,Bret,Michaels,Austin,Tyson, etc.

It's odd that this is the same company who made Sasha Bank's character be "I love Eddie Guerrero" for awhile. Don't the two ideas here contradict one another? Shouldn't she be looked down upon for loving another wrestler?

I'm pretty sure I lost a job with WWE when I started out the interview by saying I felt I was qualified for the job because I was a huge fan of the product, and knew it very well. It was an awkward interview that I honestly wasn't ready for (phone interview that actually woke me up that I wasn't expecting, I was very unprepared for it) and I could feel the air went out of it almost immediately. Even though it was my dream job at the time, and I really needed a job at the time, I probably dodged a bullet after talking to one of my friends who actually worked for them for a while.

What kinda position were you looking for?
