Nah that still is white washing a role that could go to an asian person And i know they have a voice cast with tons of asians. I'm not an expert on either show, I've barely watched them but I was curious in what the difference was between these two. I have no dog in this fight but I got slightly confused by this.

When my buddy started at work, from Ireland, I used to always make some potato related comment at break, just being an ass. "Potatoes again?" "Where's your potato?!" Stuff like that. Things went on for months. Finally one day our supervisor comes up to us, all excited, "Did you know Irish people eat a lot of potatoes?!!!!" I said, "Yeah, that's the stereotype. What do you think I've been doing for the last 4 months?!" This may seem like I'm pontificating specifically to you but that's not the case, so sorry if this comes off as an attack on you but; As an Irishman I can tell you now that whether he lets on or not, he f***ing hates/hated that. It's lazy, we've all heard it a million times before and it isn't even a true-to-life stereotype anymore (what is these days I guess). All it drudges up are echoes of the worst famine in our country's history when literally most of our people died or emigrated 'cause the country that governed us at the time basically refused to help.

So, was Apu quietly retired yet? He chose kicking and screaming.

I know. That was the point of all the jokes, that they were lazy and obvious. We’ve talked about all that kind of stuff. He knows they’re jokes and I don’t mean them.

This whole thing is an absolute farce. But I find myself saying that about mostly every sjw crusade so I guess I'll just have to suck it up or be branded a gammon or some other offensive names that where they said to an sjw would just be abhorrent.

Anyone else feel like the writers chose this route just so they could play the victims?

Feels more like they chose this route because they couldn't be bothered to put in the work to make the situation better.
I never expected such laziness from The Simpsons!

Anyone else feel like the writers chose this route just so they could play the victims? Considering how little Apu was already being used before this announcement and Al Jean's previous methods of responding to criticism, I'm guessing that's exactly why they did this. And maybe trick a few more people into watching their show to stick it to the evil sjw's before they realize The Simpsons is the same boring tripe it's been for over a decade.

If they ever make another Simpsons comic, I wonder if Apu will be included in that, since then at least you dont have the issue of Hank voicing him (heck, IIRC, Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure even appeared in issues long after Phil Hartman's death).

I always love stuff like this because you get to see the incredulity of those on social media or other platforms for whom the prospect of showing respect to other people or being respectful of their feelings/wishes is so mind-boggling. “Why do I have to take in other people’s viewpoint? Everyone should just listen to mine” I’m Scottish and yeah Groundskeeper Willie is my representation and I’m not offended by it and so I cant say that I understand those complaining about Apu because to me it’s harmless but you know what? I’m not the one getting called Apu or having “Thank you, come again” at me so that’s why you take the viewpoints of other people on board. Plus how anyone could actually defend a white man doing an Indian accent in this day and age is beyond me Plus the Simpsons is s*** anyway. 20 years of mediocrity

The episode in season nine where he gets married would have been a good ending for the character.

With how little he was being used, they could have actually "quietly retired" him (as in, without announcing it), and no one would have noticed. As it is, they screamed from the rooftops how "quietly" they would be retiring him because of how "triggered" those darn SJWs are. They clearly want to send the message that their hand was forced, and make a bad guy where there's really not one.

To put it bluntly, King of the Hill is just better written than The Simpsons. I mean, on paper, there's a lot of similarities between the two: both Asian characters, written and voiced by white guys, bearing their share of stereotypical traits. But in practice, Khan actually feels like a three-dimensional character, while Apu just feels like a racist accent and a catchphrase.

I meant more about the Steven Universe example to KOTH but honestly, I appreciate you saying that.

Apu is much more than an accent and a catch phrase. Had a pretty good character and one of the intelligent characters on the show. I’ve never seen Apu as racist. If anything the character became more flagged out as the series progressed. He went from stereotypical Indian store clerk to having a multi layered back story.

It’s a cartoon using voice actors. Plenty of voice actors play parts that in no way match their actual selves. If a white man can play an Indian character well then I see no problem. This isn’t blackface. If people think the character was written offensively I can buy that. Though I disagree I can understand, I can’t and won’t buy any good voice actors being denied worn because of race. I find a beauty and artistic merit in listening to greet voice actors changing there voice to totally different personas I don’t have an issue with Azaria stepping down and an Indian voice actor doing the role. I do respect the struggles minorities have in getting into version professions. If this helps someone get a name for themselves and start there career I do find that a good thing.

Fair enough that’s your opinion but when I hear a white dude putting on a fake stereotypical Indian accent I can’t see the beauty in that. If they are just doing it in their own voice then yeah of course what does race matter but doing the accent is beyond dodgy (in my opinion)
