Saw him give a campaign rally speech in 1992, when the Philly suburbs were still rock-solid Republican. Only sitting President I've ever seen (caught the tail-end of an Obama speech before the PA Democratic primary in '08).

I always respected him, even if I sometimes disagreed with him. RIP to a man who lived a remarkable life.

Not to be morbid but we’re probably going to be down to three here somewhat soon He’s been fighting cancer as well. It’s been responding well, or so it is said, so... something else to keep in mind. Oh, for anyone interested, here is the plan for viewing and funeral. At 10:30 AM Central, Monday, December 3, the casket will depart aboard a 747 from Ellington Field, Texas en route to Andrews Air Force Base. 3:30 PM Eastern, the casket will arrive at Andrews and proceed by motorcade to the United States Capitol. 4:45 PM Eastern, the casket will arrive at the Capitol and receive a welcome ceremony in the Capitol rotunda. Following that ceremony, the casket will lie in repose for the public to view until 8:45 AM, Wednesday, December 5. December 5, at 10 AM Eastern, the casket will leave the Capitol and travel by motorcade to Washington National Cathedral. 11 AM Eastern will be the national funeral at Washington National Cathedral. 12:30 PM Eastern, following services, the casket will leave the Cathedral en route to Andrews Air Force Base. 1:15 PM Eastern, the casket will leave aboard a 747, en route to Ellington Field, Houston, Texas. 4:30 PM Central, the casket will arrive at Ellington Field and proceed by motorcade to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. 5:45 PM Central, the casket will arrive at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. Following a welcome ceremony, the casket will lie in repose for the public to view from 6:45 PM Central until 6 AM Central, Thursday, December 6. December 6, at 10 AM Central, funeral services will be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. At 11:15 AM Central, the casket will leave St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and travel by motorcade to Union Pacific Railroad Westfield Auto Facility, Spring, Texas. 12:30 PM Central, the casket will move to a train and proceed by rail to College Station, Texas. 3:45 PM Central, the train will arrive at Texas A&M and the casket will proceed by motorcade to the George H Bush Presidental Library. 4:15 PM Central, the casket will arrive at the George H Bush Presidential Library for final interment next to Barbara Bush and Robin Bush. There will be a form of television coverage for all events for those unable to attend in person. I would personally recommend C-Span.

Just seen the note he left for Bill Clinton as he was leaving office. "Your success is the country's success, so you will have my full support" Great to see him put aside political alliances and think of the greater good. He was the most recent sitting president to lose a re-election bid, too, so that had to sting for awhile. Shows the character he had that he was able to put any bruised ego aside in that moment for the sake of the country. He and Clinton became very good friends afterwards, too. They did a lot of charity and humanitarian work together after Clinton left office. It's something Dubya's continued to do in his father's place when he became too frail to do it after he left office.
Carter, the Bushes, Clinton, and Obama are all good friends. Being the President creates that sense of fraternity between them, I guess.

His business for over half his long life and the reason his death is of note here is because of politics/the political position he held. Politics/his politics are a major part of his story.

You can mourn the man and have respect who he was without getting into a political debate, is the thing. And if any posts crossed the line, they're probably already been deleted.

Actually a really good book on the Fraternity, even before the current combinations came about. The President’s Club talks about how past Presidents have made themselves of use for knowledge, support and council to the sitting President. Worth a read if you are interested in the topic. Would like to see the topic stay open until H Bush is buried, so, given we have been given grace by the mods, please do not abuse. Keep politics out and be civil. If H Bush could do it for his time on Earth, certainly we can for four more days.

As of now HW was also the last VP to become President.
In fact if you don’t count Truman or LBJ, who both became President intially due to death, the last VP to directly succeed to the Presidency before Bush was Hoover, just to show how rare of a feat that actually is.
And to be fair to HW, while he didn’t win re-election, it’s really tough for one party to be elected to four straight terms. Only FDR/Truman were able to do that, with five total terms between the two.

He succeeded Nixon after he resigned and lost to Carter in his election bid.

Not to be morbid but we’re probably going to be down to three here somewhat soon Carter will pass GHW Bush as the longest-living former President this coming March 20th. The way he lives, he'll be around until he's 120. Nothing bothers this man.

Maybe someone can answer this for me in the thread or send me a private message. I promise I am not trying to start any trouble with this question or cross any lines. But how come politics can't be discussed here? Sincere question.
Is it because of how I guess how out of hand it can get by bringing out some unnecessary ugliness?

The last Vice President to become President by election before H Bush was Martin Van Buran way back in 1836. Very rare feat, perhaps surprisingly so.

And we have our aircraft designated for tomorrow. 747 SAM 29000 has arrived in Houston to bring H Bush to Washington. Anyone who watches tomorrow and says it’s Air Force One is technically wrong. Only an aircraft carrying the current President can be designed Air Force One, so we go by SAM for Special Air Mission and the tail number. For the record, 28000 is in Argentina to serve as Air Force One.

Didn’t necessarily agree with all of his politics, but Mr. Bush lived a full life and seemed like a dude that you could get a beer with. RIP to a real mans man.
