That's my theory as well. May well not have even got put back after copying it, either. Possibly got left in an area where they were unwittingly thrown in the trash or even stolen. Right, which is on the lower end of "wrestling tapes treated horribly" stories. I can't recall, was it the World Class or Mid-South tapes that were basically left to sit out in someone's drafty, hot, tin shed for years and years? That would be the World Class archives. It's a bit overblown, though

Candian Destroyer in ‘86?! Magee was at least 20 years ahead of his time.

The NFL does not have a broadcast copy of either of the first two Super Bowls. It can just happen with these massive tape libraries. Things get wrecked or lost all the time. The copy WWE made for Bret had to have been in the early 2000s judging by the brand of blank tape that it was copied on. It's hard to believe that they had the tape all these years then suddenly lost it in the mid 2000s after making Bret a copy. My theory: The copy was made for Bret in '89. He was given just a tape with no box and the label on the tape itself said the date that the copy was made. When it came time to store/transport the tapes, either Bret or someone with access to his collection put a bunch of random cases on them for safe keeping/easy labeling. Not having watched/researched each tape to label them, who ever made the labels just wrote what was put on the tape itself. Thus we have a Bret tape with a date on it that doesn't match the date of the matches on a much more recent sleeve.

I can't believe he stole that footage! He is a thief! I loved how some supposed Bret Hart fans still spell his name as Brett. I get WWF didn't even know how his name was spelled in 1985-1986 but he's so famous that any wrestling fan should know.

Is it 100% accurate that, based on the brand of Maxwell blank tape that Mary-Kate showed, this recording from WWE to Bret had to have been made around 2000 or so and not during Bret's WWE run? Not necessarily as, to the best of my knowledge, we haven't seen the VHS tape itself, but rather the sleeve holding the tape. The sleeve is definitely from circa-2000, but there's a big chance it was added to the tape later.

I know very few of the hundreds of once-blank tapes I still have in my closet are in the exact original sleeve they came with. Most just went into whichever empty one was nearby.

Good stuff talking about Magee's background and a quick interview with Dave Meltzer who claims to have watched the match.

Well regardless of how/where the tape came from, it doesn't appear that she has any intention of uploading it or showing it to anyone. It's cool that we at least know it exists but it's kinda like what's the point. I'm sure the match itself is nothing special anyway

But I’d be shocked if this doesn’t get an official WWE release within 3 months

Odds are good that by the end of the year this match is out in the General public's hands.

I'm guessing she tours it to a few wrestling events first.

I'm guessing she tours it to a few wrestling events first. Could she? I mean, I admit I'm no legal expert, but isn't that exhibiting WWE's footage without their consent for profit?

Pretty sure that would be an unauthorized exhibition. WWE owns the content on the tape itself, but she owns the physical tape in her possession, which she came upon honestly rather than by theft or deception. She can keep it if she wishes or sell it to WWE, assuming they truly no longer have the master or a copy of it.

I don’t mean to be negative here but I won’t be upset if I never see this match because I honestly don’t think it will live up to the hype that surrounds it.

Pretty sure she's going to shop it around, and get paid.
Why else not already donate it back to WWE.

4/10, no wonder he didn't get very far, what a indy spot monkey. It's crazy that he was with the WWF for 3+ years and showed almost no progression as a wrestler in that time. I get what Bix said in his article about the tape, apparently it was a lot harder to learn the craft back then due to their constant touring schedule and style over substance mentality, but you can see how little he seems to have picked up in that time. I get that some guys don't have a mind for being a wrestler, that they learn bad habits and can't improv or think on their feet athletically, but this guy has a special knack to be there for 3 years and still look as stiff and phony in his wrestling as he does. Really, in a fair world, if Vince had even half of a brain and less of a boner for ripped athletic blondes, he would have gone "Holy shit, Bret dragged a hell of a match out of that guy, THAT HART GUY IS GONNA BE MY CHAMPION!"
