IX was kind of a fun arena to use in SvR06, I'll give it that.

Has footage of El Matador vs. Papa Shango ever come out? The idea of Tito Santana leaving the WWF as a winner at WrestleMania still baffles me. I saw photos of it years back, that's as much as I've seen. It had to have been taped and is likely some WWE vault someplace. Maybe some weird PPV/broadcast feed exists out there (random TV dark matches from the early 2000's somehow got out that way)?

A great list of......... 1 match that have never been seen (Tito/Shango), and 4 that were either televised that night, on the pre-show or Heat, or released on WrestleMania DVD.

IX is bad. The best kind of bad. The kinda bad that swings all the way around and becomes incredibly fun. It's absolutely one of my favorite PPVs ever. Basically, IX vs XI is THE perfect example in the difference between "so bad it's good" and just plain bad.

I feel 9 was better because it FELT like a Mania more than 11, which the cool set up and the inclusion of Hulk Hogan alone still made it feel like an "event"
11 felt like a regular PPV, apart from the celebrity inclusion, it didnt feel like it had any pizazz.

And speaking specificly of the tag match I realized that when viewing wrestling as the work it is Hogan is almost the worst guy to have a tag team match with, or at least a tag match built around the classic tag formula. You don't want your biggest star standing on the mat waiting for the hot tag & Hogan doesn't want to sell until he makes the hot tag. So you end with a match with no flow.

This thread made me try to watch 11 again the other day. I’m pretty sure that I condensed the entire show down to about 5 minutes via fast forward. When you open with Luger and Bulldog against the Bruise Brothers its time to wrap it right the f*** up.

Yeah I watched XI last year. It's also very bad. It just doesn't get the unnecessary nostalgia (imo) that this show gets. People apparently like campy wrestling bits when they involve togas and a faux Roman set but not when it involves the kid from Home Improvement playing fake chess with Bob Backlund.

Some of their celebrities they used just made no sense. I get Jonathan Taylor Thomas was seen as the breakout star of Home Improvement and he was in a movie or two around that time but he just seemed kind of "there." Nothing real memorable about his appearance. Nicholas Turturro didn't serve much purple either. They really should have gone with people who were known to be real fans like Regis Philbin or someone who was so talented that they could put over any wrestler or storyline like Bob Uecker who was willing to be active in many facets of the show.

In 1995 everyone involved was either a star or on a Hit TV show. All of them made sense in the context of the times. Ditto with the Wrestlemania 2 celebs. After 1986 having Herb or the Where's the Beef? Lady wouldn't make any sense. in 1986 it did.

The coolest thing about Wrestlemania 11 was the debut of Luger & Bullog's mash up theme. Thats one of those things that stand out to me, and when thats the highlight, you know the show sucks.
I think Pam Anderson & Salt n Pepa were the only people I knew out of the celebrities in 1995. Im from the UK so the NFL was lost on me, even Lawrence Taylor I had no idea whe he was, Jenny McCarthy was pretty new to the celeb world at that point I believe and I had never seen Home Improvement so JTT I had no idea of, nor did I know who Nick Tuttoro was and I actually still dont.

Gotta have good ideas and the people involved wanting to create something special.

Are we pretending the 1998 celebrities didn't make sense? They were all people involved in scandals of varying degrees of notoriety.

I will say that at least the WMXI celebs were more higher profile than WMX, which gave us Sy Sperling, Donnie Wahlberg whose career was sliding at this point, Burt Reynolds who was also past his prime at that point, and Ronda Sheer who was basically a blonde version of Elvira and was only known to people who watched the USA Network.

The opening to 11 is my favorite ever. They show all the celebrities from previous Manias. Ali, Run DMC, Aretha Franklin, by the time IX is shown it’s Jim Ross and an elephant.
