I'm pretty sure it would be virtually impossible to make any sort of adaptation featuring the 616 version of someone just due to what a nightmare it'd be to arrange it to fit into continuity both ways going. And really I don't even know why you'd bother to try, given Marvel has infinite universes with infinite possibilities, and they pretty much consider every adaptation ever in canon except Fant4stic. Yeah, for that to work, Marvel would have needed to publish a mainline Spidey comic where he actually disappears through a dimensional rip, and then leave him out of comics until like a week after the movie comes out, then actually have him come back through with memories of the movie. This certainly didn't happen. No, it isn't that. Off-panel adventures happen all the time The thing is, Peter B. Parker is an older version of the 616 Peter/Spider-Man. Future versions of 616 characters inherently can't be 616 themselves. The furthest we've seen into 616 is what's happening in the modern day in the most current issues. Any time period and anybody from a time period beyond that comes from a diverging branch.

...And the irony is even comics 616 is a divergent branch, it's not the original timeline due to One More Day altering history.

Guessing there's no new news regarding the Sony/Disney situation in terms of Spider-Man in the MCU?

Guessing there's no new news regarding the Sony/Disney situation in terms of Spider-Man in the MCU? None, apart from confirmation that there is a continuing open dialogue between Sony and Marvel. I suspect that the longer talks go on the more likely Sony will test the water without Marvel, with further talks to take place if it underperforms.

What I'm figuring is going to happen is we'll get word on Sony reupping the deal next September, mostly since there is pretty much no chance Morbius is going to be successful because at least Venom has major name power while even most Spider-Man comic fans don't care about Morbius. Movie flops, Sony gets cold feet, then about a month later they announce they've worked out an arrangement.

Morbius is set to open against Top Gun 2 in most territories, and a week or two after in the U.S. Yeah, it's gonna get creamed.

On top of that, it's Jared Leto who's pretty much torched his value among fans of the genre. I just can't see a point to using Morbius unless he's the villain in a Spider-Man or Blade film. Honestly, the only thing that could get me to see this would be finding out that he spends the whole movie moaning about "PLAAAAAAAASMAAAA!!!!".

I do wonder what happens when they tell Marvel "we'll do fine without you", flop on their own, and come back to the table with the company so petty they discontinued one of their oldest titles because they didn't have the film rights. That should be fun.

Thus generating a sense of word of mouth and a possible box office success.

Corporations aren't our friends in the end. Growing up I can remember various studios working with one another if it meant more money. As long as fans continued to clamor for collaborations it never ceased. You'd think both could easily come to some sort of an agreement, recognizing that there's money to be made on both sides. Fans and even the general audience want to see Spider-Man in the MCU still.
Marvel/Disney needs to understand that without Iron Man or Captain America they don't have any of their reliable heavy hitters. It's not like they have the X-Men on stand by prepared to make their debut. If anything this should've pushed them to further include Deadpool into their MCU line-up as a back-up in case Spider-Man ended up being snapped out of the MCU by Sony.

So for clarity's sake, are we to assume that 616 outright died when Mephisto played with it? No. 616 is 616. Everything since then has been 616. What's happened here is that with this "change," we as readers have been meta-retconned to have not been reading 616 Spider-Man books between the time of the marriage through OMD. Those stories are now considered a divergent earth after the fact. We didn't get to see the 616 reality of those years, where everything happened almost exactly the same but without an actual marriage being in effect. In 616, they were never married. And something to remember - whether or not they ever address the whole thing again, the fact is...Mephisto can NOT alter history. He doesn't have that kind of power. If he did, he would have used it to twist history the way he needed to maximize the intake of souls he desires. It's one of the reasons he's targeted Franklin Richards a few times. Iron Man hadn't been a "heavy hitter" since the '70s when the first MCU movie came out. And they literally have access to EVERY heavy hitter of theirs minus Spidey and Venom.

The MCU makes heavy hitters now. They managed to turn a tree that does nothing but introduce himself into a beloved household name and look to be getting ready to do much the same with the Eternals, which is a property that pretty much nobody but the most hardcore of fans has ever even heard of.

Just replace Spider-Man with Spooder-Man in the MCU and be done with this Sony nonsense. Marvel has Night Monkey all lined up to be the next big superhero, all they have to do is pull the trigger on it.

Exactly. The MCU has A-list characters now in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Scott Lang. I don't doubt their ability to make anyone a star anymore.
