A 50/50 split is ridiculous, Sony owns the rights. I don't know how much money Sony puts in vs how much Disney puts in per film, but I would think a 70/30 split favoring Sony would be fair. While true, any haggler knows you go into that negotiation room with a number you want...and then starting even lower than that to get the other party to show their hand. I doubt they would have an issue with 70/30, but it sounds like Sony didn't even want to counter and just walked away.

Disney didn’t just walk in asking for 50% of the profit, they offered to be a co-financier and put up 50% of the production cost which would entitle them to 50% of the profit because they’d be assuming 50% of the risk. As it stood, Disney invested $0 in Homecoming and Far From Home because Sony was sole financier and got 5% for their producer credit.

Jeremy Renner bringing up Stan Lee in this is really scummy. Don’t use the dead to shame this kinda thing.

My takeaway from this whole non-deal:
Corporations are not your friends.

Homecoming and Far From Home were made entirely on Sony's dime, but pretty much everything else was Marvel. Sony technically had creative control over the movies, but by all accounts (except Sony's in the last 24 hours) the limit of the creative control they exercised was giving the okay to everything Marvel came to them with. Disney settled for the 5% cut despite doing pretty much all the work just to get access to Spider-Man for Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame. Now that that half of the agreement has been fulfilled and there's going to be less focus on ensemble movies for a while it makes sense for them to renegotiate.

I'd figure Stan Lee would probably just chase whatever would lead to money really, a lot of the guy's work seemed pretty mercenary. Not that I mean that as a bad thing, it isn't.

Even at his most lovable Stan, ambassador of comics etc, he could be pretty ruthless. I love the guy, but he was complex.
If you get a chance, Stan Lee and the rise and fall of the American comic book is a great read.

It's kind of amazing how bad at business 90's Marvel was. No wonder why they nearly went out of business until Disney bailed them out.

Next Avengers they'll just do like the Genesis Shinobi and paint Spidey purple.

Comics as a while had that bubble burst and Marvel mad some really bad decisions like buying Toy Biz, trying to do their own distribution etc. You had the marketing people and the comics people completely at odds. Ron Perelman's ownership was disastrous for an post 90s crash.

Stan Lee was happy to see his characters regardless of the studio. Renner and Disney trotting out his corpse to sell tickets or curry favor is disgusting

All will be forgiven if the Sony Spider-Man film casts Betty White as Aunt May. Each successive Aunt May is younger and more attractive, so I fully expect the next version of Aunt May to be played by Kate Upton. And yet, if they reboot I see them going back to a lot of status quos, seen in the comics and in the previous movies.

Honestly, my worst fear about another exclusively Sony Spider-Man movie is that Avi Arad will turn it back into another angst-riddled love story. Now granted, both Homecoming and Far From Home did have this in small doses, but it was no where near as prevalent as it was in the Raimi and Amazing movies.

They could go full terrible idea and adapt Spider-Man Reign. There's a story for the big screen, Pete accidentally kills MJ with cancer semen.
