A few thoughts, after having a couple days to digest & catch up on the thread...
1) To those of you saying the #ThankYouKofi tweet from WWE is a sure sign that a redemption arc is coming: I wish I were as optimistic as you, but with all due respect, I don’t think the tweet at all means it’s a sure thing. As much of a micromanager as Vince is, even he has his limits. I could definitely see social media being one of the things he’s willing to hand off to someone else. I could also see whoever’s in charge of it being able to read the mood on the web & trying to tweet out something to calm the unrest while still towing the company line. (Perhaps it even came down as a directive from Triple H or Stephanie, both of whom seem more able/willing to read the mood of fans on things like this.)
Maybe you’re right, & it is a sign of a coming redemption arc. I hope it is. But respectfully, I’m not quite ready to jump on that train just yet until we see booking actually taking steps in that direction.
2) Do we know the terms of Cain’s deal yet, whether he’s signed full-time, part-time, or if this is just a one-off? If he has signed full-time, I’m wondering if it may be their way of transitioning to a new “MMA big bad,” & moving Brock more into semi-retirement/special attraction status. If they will be to have an ex-MMA star in the title scene, at least having one who’s there full-time would help keep the title from being off-screen for weeks at a time, if indeed Cain is now full-time.
(As far as Kofi is concerned, I still think any redemption arc would need to go through Brock to be complete. But I’d accept him beating Brock separately & then recapturing the title, or vice versa.)
3) Seeing the SD promos on Fox during the NFL games today, I find it interesting that the wrestlers featured are mostly the current full-time stars—including Kofi—not a lot of Brock, Cain, or the legends. I’ve seen it speculated here that the Brock/Cain feud was probably what Fox wanted, and Friday night, that was my thought as well. But seeing the way Fox is promoting SD today, I’m not so sure.
I think it’s very possible that WWE thought this was the kind of “real sports feel” that Fox wanted, when in reality, Fox wanted top-level wrestling stars doing their thing. Not sure I’m completely committed to that theory, but from what I’ve seen it would seem more consistent with the way Fox is promoting SD today.
