I think there are sexist people that don't like movies like this but a lot of times if you just don't like the movie you get lumped in with that crowd. Like for example the all female Ghostbusters, that was somehow turned into people didn't like it because it was sexist, really? I didn't like it because it sucked, had nothing to do with anything else. That doesn't make someone sexist.

Slightly aside from movies - I loved Sarah Connor Chronicles.
I also loved Teri Hatcher's Lois Lane. She was superior to Clark in every way if you took away the Superman.
They were organic, well acted empowered roles.
I hate pandering to the crowd/let's hit demographics/corporate image type female empowerment in my entertainment (including WWE)

I am not sure what is getting more hate for this year: Captain Marvel or the new Charlie's Angels movie. What's weird about the latter is that I read that it's connected to not just the 2000s films, but also the TV show, as it's a generational thing. But tell that to people on Facebook and such, because everyone is all going off on it for being a reboot, but even I am sure that it's also because of this "empowered women" thing. I don't know about any of you, but I am going to see it. I don't care. I'm going to see it. Also, this thread reminded me of a thread for the WWE boards earlier this year when it talked about the women's division. If you don't remember, here it is.

Can it be justified when they got Scarlet Johansson to play Major Kusanagi in Ghost In The Shell? That particular case is admittedly kind of sketchy given the creator said he doesn't care, but in general I feel like - coming from a white man here - there's a big difference between turning someone white and turning someone another race, because for so many years in entertainment white was the default state of being. You pretty much need to do race swaps, and retcons like Nightwing being Romani, to get anywhere close to having minority heroes make any sort of dent in the industry. I'm opening myself up to all the slings and arrows in the world here, but I think that says something about people not being willing to accept new characters and new IPs, and that's something that needs to be addressed too, at some point. Not any further in this topic, I'll grant, however.

And that the single by Ariana and the two other girls is trash.

(Also did we forget they tried to revive CA on television after the Barrymore movies? And it...didn't work out.)

I was glad when it got cancelled a few weeks in so I didn’t have to watch it with my GF anymore

There’s a minority of trolls but I really don’t think there’s that much backlash against it these days.
For every guy whining about Max not being the star of Fury Road, there’s at least a dozen people who are like “that movie was f***ing awesome!”

I stand by my belief that if the film had an all male cast or the original cast critics and fans would've been praising it.

Forget if it was he who started "You don't like it cause they're all women!" or not. Anyway, all-male wouldn't solve a thing. There's also the hate of remakes many have. Nothing but the OC would have been accepted, and that it was part of the original continuity, IMO. (Yeah, Harrison came back as Indy and, you know. And YMMV on the Sequel Trilogy)

I don't know about that. While the cast is talented, I think the script and editing were issues as well. RedLetterMedia did a great Mr. Plinkett review on Ghostbusters 2016 and the issues with that film. Still your point is taken. I've never had a problem with females as the action star, but wish Hollywood stopped acting like this was some new thing. Ripley in the Alien series and Sarah Connor in T2 were asskicking machines before some people were even born.

The trailer for Ghostbusters was awful, it would have been just as bad if it was the same jokes with male actors, and I think that had a lot to do with the lack of success.

I just want to add, during the whole BS of Ghostbusters 2016, it made me realise how extremely overrated the original movies are.

Ripley in the Alien series and Sarah Connor in T2 were asskicking machines before some people were even born. The big thing is that.... Those are basically the only noteworthy examples before the past few years. You can't really go, "But women are action stars all the time!" when the only ones anyone ever expresses any awareness of are from 40 years ago.

Even with them there was a relative dearth of the empowered female hero throughout the '90s and early 2000s compared to their male equivalents.

There's a balance that has tipped more toward female centered action films only recently which is fine, and I agree only manbabies complain about. To clarify my take a bit, it is they shouldn't forget there have been true female action stars around since, really, the late 70s (Ripley) even if they were the exception to the rule. Basically it's don't forget Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamiliton (preferablly T2 and not Dark Fate Sarah Connor) are badasses. For all the praise we gave Wonder Woman, there's been female action stars who I feel in some cases have done it better. Wonder Woman is a good film, but Aliens? That's in my top 5 movies. It worked the opposite way before where Hollywood took the wrong lessons from movies like Elektra and Catwoman. The lesson wasn't female led action movies fail, but that they were bad films that didn't due justice to there comic book counterparts. Luckily, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel did do a much better job in that department. Ghostbusters 2016 is going to be controversial one, but I thought RedLetterMedia had the best take: Both sides of the aisle got all hot and bothered over an unfunny (this is just my opinion) movie designed to sell Papa John's pizza and pringles. Like if I were to complain about Captain Marvel, give me legitmate complaints like Brie Larson's acting is wooden or the movie follows a standard marvel phase one template and doesn't really add anything to the MCU (outside a female led movie). Those criticisms I can see as valid. But when you complain about something Brie Larson said or engage in conspiracy theories about disney buying tickets your argument loses all legitmacy to me. No one here is doing that, of course, but I've seen some darker corners of the net where these things thrive.
