Bill Watts is... Bill Watts. I'm not sure much more has to be said there. Honestly, outside of Don Owen, are any of them all that clean? Considering how powerful he was, Jim Barnett seems to have a good reputation.

Fritz Von Eric: Covered up his sons' reckless behavior and drug use, ultimately resulting in their deaths. Beat his kids into adulthood. Most likely bought his still teenaged sons prostitutes. Put Kerry on steroids when he was 15. Forced Mike into wrestling. Immediately put him and the rest of his family in front of a camera after Mike almost died from toxic shock to promote a show, Mike barely able to function. Still kept him wrestling even after he was obviously brain damaged from the toxic shock. Barely mentioned his death on TV, most likely because he thought his suicide would hurt the family's born again image. Added cousin Lance, a fake Von Erich, to replace Mike while he was recovering from toxic shock. Covered up the fact that Kerry was high when he crashed his motorcycle into a police cruiser and severely f***ed up his foot. Potentially caused Kerry to end up losing his foot because he was forced back into the ring to early. Hid the fact that he wrestled with a prostatic because he thought it would make Kerry look week. Pointed a gun at Kevin and told him if he was a man he would have killed himself like Mike, Kerry, and Chris. Attempted to blame Kevin for Kerry's suicide in his book. I started listening to the Lapsed Fan podcast a few months ago and listened to the year-to-year deep dive about WCCW and couldn't believe the stories I heard, the Mike Von Erich press conference was horrible.

Considering how powerful he was, Jim Barnett seems to have a good reputation. Wow, somebody really did not do their research on Jim Barnett if they think that. He was tied in the 1962 prostitution scandal of the University of Kentucky football team. He basically drove Ann Gunkel's outlaw territory out of business with tactics a lot of people might consider shady and unethical. While the Brisco's get most of the blame, I've gotta believe a lot of people on the wrong side of the Black Saturday fiasco have some animosity at Barnett over his role in it. Plus hasn't Hulk Hogan claimed that Jim Barnett shamelessly hit on him every time Hogan worked for Georgia? Granted, it's Hogan, so who knows how truthful that is.

Dixie Carter's treatment of Jessie Sorensen is unforgivable. He got hurt on their watch, they used it as an angle and did segments acting like they were taking care of him, meanwhile they let his parents foot the bill and go bankrupt doing so. They gave him a job in production then cut him loose at the first opportunity. Asshole. This is something that honestly makes me think Dixie is so much worse than a lot of the others. They would at least be up front about being assholes. Dixie would do shady shit and make sure it was covered up and put forth this sweet, kindly image.

I think Tenyu running WAR is probably the only promoter I can't recall anyone talking some level of shit about. Quackenbush is an absolute control freak who has no qualms manipulating workers or fans for his purposes. It's minor compared to many of these others, but I have to wonder if he'd have a company at all without the alumni he turned out meaning people put up with his bullshit. If Chikara ever holds a tryout don’t give them your money. They already have someone picked out who they want and can’t afford the training. So they have a group come in for a tryout at $50 each to cover the cost. Afterwards they choose the person they had from the get go and offer the rest a minor discount to train. The latest I’m aware of is Travis Huckabee as the chosen one.

Another scumbag DJ Hyde story, he forbade CZW wrestlers from doing any shows with GCW. He would threaten their pushes and would sabotage their careers. I also heard he tried recruiting green wrestlers training at Tremonts facility without hus consent and being creepy Remember this? “Sup Grrrlll?” Even made it onto a watermelon at TOD

As far as the territories go, there are three promoters who are generally seen as being decent human beings - Paul Boesch, Sam Muchnick and Don Owen (and Boesch just barely makes it). Pretty much every other promoter of note from that era had some serious taint to them in one regard or another.

also Herb Abrams dying of a heart attack whilst coated in cocaine and vaseline and chasing hookers around his house with a baseball bat. Abrams was such a sleaze. I'm pretty sure he wrongly believed, in a fit of cocaine-induced paranoia, that his wife was sleeping with Steve Ray, so paid Dr. Death to shoot on him and break his nose during a TV taping. As for my submissions:
Hustle being owned by a company that was a front for the yakuza.
WCW using their hotline for exploitative bait-and-switches, doing things like teasing a big scoop on a "45-year-old world champion" who has died in the mid nineties, making people think it was Ric Flair when it was Jerry Blackwell.
Global Force Gold.
Former WWA promoter Andrew McManus' involvement with organised crime and ties to an international cocaine-smuggling ring.

Naw, Stevie Ray talks about that. Brian Zane shows the clip in his UWF video. The story isn’t true, according to Ray.

Lo Dixie Carter's treatment of Jessie Sorensen is unforgivable. The thing is I think at one point, Dixie's well meaning thing wasn't an act, but she got taken for a ride again and again and again and again by wrestling greats and she came out the other side a monster that wrestling created. People like the Jarretts, Hogan, Dusty, Russo, Bischoff and co all came, gave useless, selfserving advice that made them richer at her expense, giving little return and she learned all the wrong lessons, as a promoter and a person. Don't get me wrong, I'm not making excuses for her, but this is what wrestling does to people.

It wasn't ever confirmed, and I personally don't buy it at all. It's too salacious; the truth is probably just it was an ambitious creative idea that he never had a good handle on and that was completely separated from what fans actually like and want. For specific sleaze, the Condron pettiness is what comes to my mind first. Generally, Quack just has that old wrestling mindset where, if you want to succeed as a wrestler, you do a bunch of free, dangerous labor without complaining. I'm sure it's common, but he's strangely unapologetic about it. I remember hearing that one DJ Hyde (who hates Quack) was the source of the "Quack slept with Saturyne/Hania" rumor, which makes it pretty dubious from the getgo. The Condron pettiness comes to mind for me, too. Especially trying to trademark Jervis Cottonbelly out from under him. He's also been using the threat of killing off characters as a way to keep people in line, which is just awful. Re: Ian Rotten, I once knew someone who wrestled for him for a time. Said Ian tried to pay people in sandwiches that had gone bad. Yeesh. DJ mentioned it in his shoot as what the rumor among the boys was, but I remember that rumor floating long before he said anything. I remember long before DJ commented on that that CHIKARA stopped because Quack was going through a nasty divorce and his soon to be ex and her family actually owned the name. Quack is also known for being insanely cheap. See the first Pro Wrestling Day where he charged for tickets and parking (or at least parking) but didnt pay the wrestlers anything. When Zandig owned CZW and he was having a dispute with Johnny Kashmere he had Kashmere beat up... he also pushed SMV owner Matt Burns down the stairs for not liking booking decisions. Not gonna comment on the GCW/CZW stuff. Let's just say both DJ and Lauderdale are petulant children dealing with each other and they have both screwed each other over enough for me to have any sympathy for either of them. I think at this point they have been told by enough people to just ignore each other.
