whiny bitches.
I finally got around to watching Solo: A Star Wars Story. I was leery based on how it got dumped on by Star Wars fans to the point that they killed the Star Wars Anthology film line. I now know that those Star Wars fans are likely to bitch about ANYTHING now. That was a damned fun film and no where near worthy of the hatred it got.
Was it perfect? Well, no, but since when does a film have to be perfect? It was still fun, had a relatively interesting story filled with interesting characters, and basically works as a small story in a larger universe, which was the whole damned point of the Anthology films.
I mean, I should have seen it coming. People complain about just about every Star Wars film. News flash: Not a single damned one of these films are perfect, even if several of them are damned solid. Nothing about Star Wars is perfect, though much of it deserves the love it gets.
Ep 4: Honestly, I don't care for this one that much. It is overly simplistic. The story is cliche. The characters are too cut and paste (made worse by the SE). Yes, the universe is fantastic. Everything feels lived in and I loved that. It definitely deserves to be the basis for a multi-billion dollar long-running franchise. I just have a hard time getting into the movie itself, even though I like individual scenes in the film just fine.
Holiday special: It was overly cheesy, but frankly it should be viewed as a promotional piece for the Rebellion as opposed to anything canon. In that light, I give it a pass.
Ep 5: Honestly, while it isn't perfect it is actually so good that it requires an obsessive fanbase to notice the actual flaws upon infinite repeated views. I have no complaints here.
Ep 6: Some might not care for the Ewoks, but I am not too bothered with that. It was much better than the original film and the third act is really, REALLY fun.
Ewok film trilogy: I won't lie, I never watched these. They might be cinematic masterpieces, but I have SERIOUS doubts about that.
Ewoks cartoon: I honestly don't remember anything from it. It did not resonate in any way.
Droids cartoon: I do remember some things. The various mechanical lifeforms presented in the cartoon are something that was very interesting that I wish was explored in more serious canon materials. The rest is forgettable (by which I mean I forgot it).
Ep 1: The secondary villain feels underdeveloped but potentially very cool (which was an accurate assessment upon better exploring the character in canon materials). There were some interesting action pieces. I actually REALLY enjoy the politics backstory, but it appears I am alone in that one. Yes, this definitely a film with flaws, but there still is good there. It just could be better.
Ep 2: It's not as crap as people make it out to be, but it basically has all of the same flaws as the original film (very simplistic), but try to cover concepts that require a little more nuance to do it right. Still, there is good present here and laid the foundation for a very good cartoon series.
The Clone Wars cartoon: There was some really interesting stuff in this one that was added to other stuff in actual canon material. It definitely overplayed the anime style action, so that was an issue at times, but fortunately the General Grevious stuff was emulated in later materials because that style worked for that character.
Ep 3: This film could have used an extra 10 minutes to develop the storyline a little. Still, it was the best of the prequel trilogy and pretty enjoyable overall.
Clone Wars cartoon: Honestly, it took them a while to get their feet under them, but eventually the writing got to be so good. The fact that it was always ran out of sequence meant that they could always return to older story periods once they got better if they so chose to. In fact, the earliest episode chronologically was the first episode of Season 3, I think. This worked in their favor, quite honestly.
Star Wars Rebels: It started as a kids show but definitely was of a much higher quality than the earlier kids shows from the previous generation. It also just got good as it went on, with a nice mix of humor, universe building, resolution of older stories, and a massive expansion of the canon with the World Between Worlds.
Star Wars: Rogue One: Honestly, I loved the entirety of this film. I get why others might not have since it definitely started out much darker than previous films and literally killed off every interesting character, but to me it bridges the gap between "the world is burning" ending of Ep 3 to Ep 4's "New Hope".
Ep 7: Well, it basically is Ep 4 done better, so that's nice.
Ep 8: Honestly, if they had added another 2 hours of material to this and made it a miniseries it would have been just fine. It was an odd combination of not enough material and too much material. I left the theater thinking "Well, that could have been handled better."
I have not yet seen Rebellion or Ep 9, but if the pattern of complaining I have seen holds up, they are both just fine and possibly quite enjoyable for casual fans but have flaws that could be improved upon.
