It's for the best. Now the development team, whenever they can get to it, can actually take their time in making the game, maybe even make some significant chances, versus being being chained to the yearly sports game mindset.
Unfortunately, it also means Take Two will have more time to think of even more scummy ways to monetize the f*** out of the game.

Will the next game be called 2K22 despite the obvious year gap, or could there be a name change with the series after the world is hopefully back to normal next year?

At least I don’t have to get a new game just to update Bluebird’s look.

It’s about time Vacant got the cover. The next game's cover after Vacant will no doubt be Austin Theory.

Hopefully that means the 2K19 servers will be left up even longer.

This years game was the only WWE game I never bought. The reviews were just too much for me.
The lack of additional characters via DLC was also a deciding factor for me.
I hate fantasy stuff. I will never play as a Frankenstein Braun Strowman or a Zombie Triple H. I would much rather have guys like WALTER or John Morrison in there.
On top of that, the graphics somehow look WORSE than WWE 2K15 (five games ago!) Is it just me or do gaming companies gradually make the graphics worse as years go by? Is it to make the Next Gen console (In this case 2K22) look so much better in comparison? I'm definitely not imagining this.
Overall, there is an easy solution for this. Make the WWE games like Fortnite, WarZone, etc. Instead of new games, have "Seasons". Make the game free and charge for Battle passes and stuff. That's the future of gaming. There is so many possibilities with this.

Hopefully that means the 2K19 servers will be left up even longer. You mean the good game. Unfortunately, they'll shut those down to force everyone onto the broken mess that is 2K20.

it's something that games developers seem to be realising, yearly releases leave little time to actually make the game as good as they want it to be and causes burnout amongst the fanbase and staff (Ubisoft with the assassins creed series & the guitar heroes series for examples on both.) either through lacklustre games or just not getting the full experience out of a game before the next one is out (there are exceptions like call of duty games being worked on by two or three studios but having a two/three year cycle of getting their game out while the other works on theirs.) and the fanbase will have felt burned by wwe 2k20 being as bad as it was.
it sucks for fans of the series but having a bigger gap between game releases usually leads to a better game

Should be noted, this hardly ever involved game developers. If anything, those are the people likely to tell anyone until they’re blue in the face what changes they wanted to do, what’s wrong with it etc. There’s no scenario I can picture where the development team would have wanted to put 2K20 out in the state it was.
WWE and 2K, however...

I figured it would be, it’s just not remotely efficient to do right now and 2K20 didn’t sell enough to be worth all the extra effort it would take.

Well deserved. Now they can make some serious plans if they want to take it more seriously next year. We'll see with everything going on in the company.

I think that this has got to be the first time since 1998 that WWE did not have a new video game for the holiday season.
