Post by Some Baritone guy IS REDEEMED! on Apr 20, 2021 23:46:50 GMT -5
My mom happened to be in the room when I was watching the New Jack episode of Dark Side of the Ring, and when the Mass Transit incident was discussed we got into a heated debate.
My mom sympathized with him because he was just a kid, and New Jack's actions were extremely disproportionate for what Mass Transit did. Meanwhile I have zero sympathy for him, because while he didn't deserve what happened to him, and New Jack's behavior was way out of line, I feel he completely brought it on himself by lying to get in there.
I wanted to get all of your takes on it.

some (probably around 85%-90%). he was a kid and kids are stupid, but the fact that you're stupid doesn't excuse you from your stupid decisions. if a dumbass breaks his leg doing a backflip off his roof, do you go "how tragic" or "that's why you don't do a backflip off the roof, dumbass"? but at the same time New Jack took it way too f***ing far. you're supposed to be professional, as in trying to make it look like you're hurting your opponent when in actually trying not to let them get hurt

I have some sympathy; he lied about being a trained wrestler to get onto a show but didn't deserve what New Jack did to him.

A kid's a kid. Complete sympathy.
I do wish he hadn't lied, both to avert this all, and because it honestly is a quality name and gimmick. Had he gone about it properly, maybe he'd have had a career.

He was a kid who had no real idea what he was getting into and got taken advantage of by guys who should know better. Whether he lied or not is irrelevant, if you're hung up on that you're missing the point. If the kid had injured himself this would be a whole different discussion, but we're looking at a bunch of guys who should have at least identified he had no idea what he was doing in the ring and put a stop to whatever they planned instead of deciding to hardway cut the guy.

He put himself into the situation by lying about his age and such. Plus after the incident happened he was still playing to the crowd, so I think he wasn't as mentally hurt by it as we think

Some. He was at fault for lying and trying to get in but then again kids are kids and do stupid stuff, but then again this was ECW and this was Heyman. I kinda blame Heyman trying to be subversive and edgy and carny at the same time, and I kinda blame the wrestlers that vetted him when Heyman asked if they know this guy, they lied for him, so irresponsible on their part as well. I guess at that time period, do anything to the extreme to break in, eh?

The person most at fault was Paul Heyman. I’m glad that in the last decade or so there’s been an awakening to what a scuzz he is.

He was an idiot, most teenagers are idiots, he's like the 4th most responsible person for that fiasco.
#3 is New Jack, and it's saying something that the violently unstable man who literally tried to kill a complete stranger for the heck of it isn't the biggest f***up in this scenario.
#2 is the kid's dad, for lying for him in the first place. You're supposed to keep your dumbass teenagers in line when they're getting dangerously stupid, not enable them.
#1 is Heyman, demonstrating his brilliant business sense by taking the fat teenager who says he's totally a real pro wrestler at his word. Forget finances, even if McMahon was promoting at this scale with the same minimal resources he'd never be stupid enough to expose himself to this sort of massive legal liability for absolutely no reason.

Isn't, like, one mostly dependent on the other?

Based on this old excerpt www.youtube.com/watch?v=smfLTc0uIT4Language warning. Well if you go past it, they kinda shoulda figured out something wasn't right about it, and maybe should've vetted more on the kid. Especially when he did things they know most wrestlers wouldn't do and shouldn't do, I recall another shoot where they said they should've known it was fake because if he was a student of Kowalski, Kowalski himself would've been present at the event. I'm surprised they didn't just show him the door after the way he behaved backstage, unless they were hoping they could go JBL or Hardcore Holly on this upstart.

A little, because I'm sure it was a pretty terrifying situation to be in, regardless of age. But on the other hand there were so many points leading up to what happened happening where either he or his father could have said 'actually...' that I struggle to bring myself to have much empathy for him.

Complete, because he was just a kid.
New Jack is just a twat, who never had the basic intelligence to understand wrestling. You don't hurt people for real, you don't use forks and screwdrivers and other such shit.
Garbage wrestling, trash of a human being.

Watching that dark side episode, it does seem that New Jack does use a wrestling match as a cover to attempt to murder Someone. I mean, did he not pull a knife out and stab a guy five times in front of 30 people cause he didn't like the guy?

Some. Really everyone involved in this was a moron. New Jack is New Jack, Heyman was extremely foolish/negligent allowing him on the card (although frankly most other promoters would’ve done the same), Mass Transit obviously lied and it resulted in him almost being killed, and his father should’ve been responsible and told him not to be so bloody stupid and didn’t.
The whole thing was a cavalcade of stupidity, with Mass Transit Sr. being the deciding factor because without him the whole thing might/probably would not have happened.

Complete. Even if he was the proper age, New jack would have still carved him up.
