Hello all of my lovies, my lovlies, my WWF internet family!!!
I hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend!! I hope this weekend is long, relaxing, and enjoyable.
I am sure there's another thread like this somewhere, but I was on page #8 and I kinda gave up on looking for one that was similar. LOL. If anyone else did have a similar thread, I apologize in advance.
This thread was created because I may have had a completely unpopular opinion when it came to certain wrestlers in the WWF/WWE era. My taste in wrestlers is pretty bad lol, I'll admit. I tended not to like the faces who were somewhat "jerkish" (which is funny because I liked Jericho, even though he was neutral for his debut, until he started messing with Trips and Angle), but I also tended not to like the heels that had no purpose or motivation.
I'll go down my list and explain my reasonings to each of the wrestlers I didn't too much care for, but everyone else loved.
(Keep in mind, these are only MY opinions, please feel free to share your own. I know I am going to get a LOT of kickback from this):
The Rock- For some odd reason, I liked Rocky Maivia. He was always smiling and I thought Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson had a cute smile. When he was with The NOD, I didn't mind him too much because the team kinda worked in cohesion. Faarooq was their talker and he was pretty good at cutting a promo. However, when The Rock turned his back on them and joined the Corporation, he became Vince's pet and it was just....strange. The writers tried to set it up with a father/son relationship, but it didn't really work out that way. Vince eventually turned his back on The Rock and kicked him out of the Corporation when he failed to defeat Austin twice. After that, The Rock went solo and didn't trust anyone. He would gab on the mic incessantly and act all arrogant. The Rock only talked about himself. He thought his shit didn't stink and would tell everyone who would listen how great he was. I don't like guys like that. His PPV record in the Attitude Era was spotty, but in 2000, he had a period over the summer where he had God mode on. He could be beaten, however, the writers played it up as if he were untouchable. In fact, it was because of this incarnation of The Rock that I became a fan of Triple H, as Triple H was basically the only person who would shut The Rock up. It was because of Triple H that we saw more emotions from The Rock, especially after Judgment Day 2000, when The Rock was desperate and emotionally hurt. With Austin, it was more friendly competition, but with Triple H and The Rock, those two hated each other. Now, this isn't a knock against Dwayne, it's just he acted that character out very well.
The Hardy Boyz (and Lita)- Moreso Jeff than Matt, but both of them were kinda cardboard cutouts. I loved their move-set and how they flowed in the ring with others, but do not allow them to cut a promo. I was more of an Edge and Christian fan around the time that I began taking notice of the Hardy Boyz anyway, and E&C actually had personality. They would make fun of their opponents, the crowd, and then sprinkle in some of their personality for the hell of it. With the Hardy Boyz, you barely got anything from them mic wise. I know the caveat to that is "Well, look how great they were in the ring!" Yes, they were pretty decent in the ring, but they didn't win me over with their non-acting. In fact, it was borderline Linda McMahon non-acting. I didn't like Lita too much either. Again, she was great in the ring for the era I watched her in, but she may as well been a piece of cardboard herself. IMHO, Lita's best acting came from her feud with Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley during the spring/summer of 2000. EDIT: I just saw a match with Stacy Kiebler. Nevermind, Lita was not so bad. I just didn't like her because she associated with The Hardy Boyz and she went up against Steph.
Tajiri- Annoying and a racist stereotype. Kaientai were a racist stereotype as well, but they weren't annoying. Tajiri was all hyper and everything. It was gross.
Sable- Annoying. Sable was the epitome of what the hell was wrong with the Women's Division of the WWF during the Attitude Era. She had zero mic skills, zero in-ring ability, and was only really hired by Vince and Vinnie Mac due to her "looks". Well, I am no supermodel, but I will say that Sable was supposedly in her late 20's during this, but looked like a 40 year old smoker who happened to be an ex-stripper. If there were such a thing, Sable was the anti-Alundra Blaze. Whereas Alundra performed very well in the ring and could be taken seriously, Sable shat on all of that. Then she would grab the mic and say: "This if for all the men who came to see me; here's the grind!" where she would do this weird gyrating dance move that looked as though she had photosensitive epilepsy and was just in a club playing old school house with a strobe effect. The girl had zero rhythm and even less wrestling ability. Then they had the nerve to give her a STALKER in Tori. Arguably, Tori was a better wrestler than Sable. Even if she wasn't, she moved a bit better in the ring and could give the illusion that she was competent in wrestling. The whole story of them bringing on Marc Mero because he was the then husband of Sable just because he was married to her was sordid and vile. Then that love triangle with Jacqueline, which was kinda disrespectful to Jacqueline, whose in-ring ability far surpassed Sable's. Then the stupid writers had the stupid ass idea to give her the WWF Women's Championship. She never lost it nor jobbed to anyone and it was deactivated until around the summer of 1999 where the plot needed it again. In that instance the WWF was putting her on the same level as Chyna, who, I admit, as much as a mark for Chyna, she was sloppy in the ring and whatnot, but at least she could convince the audience she knew how to wrestle. Ugh...I could go on and on about Sable, but I'll end it here.
Taz/Tazz- I didn't dislike Taz in the WWF, but I just found his character useless as all get out.I feel as though the writers didn't utilize his character correctly and nowhere near the level where they should have taken him. I feel as though he ALONE should have been the one to run over Austin, not Rikishi, at Survivor Series 1999. I mean, didn't he have an undefeated streak that was running concurrently with Kurt Angle?
Torrie Wilson/Stacy Kiebler- They were both pretty much the same as Sable. Just there for eye candy with zero in-ring ability. Maybe I should delete the trash I talked about Lita. I know, I know everyone is all like "Oh, you hate Stacy Kiebler, Sable, and Torrie Wilson for their lack of in-ring ability but you like Stephanie! I call shenanigans!" At least Stephanie improved her in-ring work to an extent and bulked up a bit after her real-life marriage to Triple H. Also, she had that match against Trish Stratus at No Way Out 2001, which was arguably her best match.
The Blue Meanie- Annoying, but awesome theme music. Then him calling Goldust "Mommy" was a bit creepy.
Drew Carey at Royal Rumble 2001- I did not find this endearing in the least bit. I thought it was poorly thought out and stupid. I really, really, really wanted Kane to finish his aborted chokeslam on him. He took up a spot from a legitimate wrestler. Royal Rumble 2001 was a perfect and spotless Royal Rumble without some stupid "hot at the time celebrity" cameo or whatever. That was Vinnie Mac trying to be "mainstream", "cool", and "in touch with the audience", but looking at it 20 years later, it looks stupid, pandering, and pathetic. Asinine.
Maven- He was weird, coupled with this weird country twang. He was kinda cute, but goofy AF!!! I don't think I liked him too much once he started talking. And everything about him was "HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!" Like, we get it, you were the first winner of the "Tough Enough" wanna-be American Idol Reality TV BS that is still the rage with people who don't have enough drama in their life.
That's it for now. I am sure I have more, but that's all I can think of at this moment and I'm sure I talked way too much on this thread. I'll wait until I get some responses (which will probably be more antagonistic than I am expecting lol) before I proceed further. I just want to hear your thoughts!!

Tommy Dreamer; always saw him as just a guy, never put on a halfway decent match and he came off as a poser whenever they attempted to legitimize him. He also had the absolute most physically disgusting gimmick when he went to WWE by eating food that people stepped on or when he drank Undertaker's tobacco spit.
It takes a lot for me to get physically ill, but that was the closest I came to involuntarily vomiting.
Then that time where he legitimately frightened his small children by blading and then walking over to them when he was in TNA.

I am glad the OP mentioned the Rock and Sable. There is not a thing sexy about Sable and was just another hire by the WWE because Vince feels the need to prove to people he is straight alpha male. The Rock was great as a heel but when he was a face he sounded like he was trying too hard for people to like him.

Currently: Chuck Taylor. Dude isn't funny. Every joke is "_______ pervert". For years it's felt like he's coasting on someone else's coattails without actually putting in the effort himself. I don't see the appeal. I could go on and on, but we'll leave it at that.
He's the reason I detest the stable of Best Friends (even if I do like OC).
But to balance the scales, he did some commentary years back in New Japan, and I thought he was good at that. But as far as a wrestler/wrestling personality? Hard pass.

For me this begins and ends with CM Punk.
For the longest time it seemed like there was a thread for every little thing he ever did, lots of hate for anyone who went over him, taking his heat on people as gospel of why they objectively sucked, the *coughcoughTOTALLYREALcoughcough* "If CM Punk did it" paradox. And while I don't blame him for walking out on WWE given his frustrations with creative, I think he may have given up a little too quick on his Wrestlemania headline dream since he was just a few years after finally becoming a true main eventer.
Then he got his ass handed to him in UFC to the point where even I felt bad for him.
I heard he came back to AEW.
Good for him.

Punk is definitely one. Not saying he isn't good because he definitely is but he just always comes off like such a prickly whiner, both in character and in real life. It works when he's working heel but when he's a face, not so much. Although I will say I've found him more tolerable during his AEW run so far. Like I don't get why he's constantly having long competitive matches with lower midcard dudes all the time but that's more on the booking not him. As far as his character presentation though he's been fine.
Bray Wyatt is the other big one. Everyone seems to love him and I just never got it. I thought both of his gimmicks whether it be cult leader guy or the Fiend were super dumb and didn't make any sense. I also never found any of his matches any good either. Only exception is the 2014 Royal Rumble match against Bryan which was more to do with Bryan then him. The Firefly Funhouse stuff was intriguing at first and then ended up being crap once it turned out it just lead to the Fiend stuff and more supernatural crap. I never understood at all how he was a main eventer in WWE for like eight years.

I don’t like how Attitude era Bossman has been reclaimed as this hilarious amazing heel. I remember the crowd audibly groaning when his music hit.

Who tried to claim Attitude Era Bossman was an amazing heel? I thought it was pretty much unanimous that everything he did in late 99 was the drizzling shits?

Who tried to claim Attitude Era Bossman was an amazing heel? I thought it was pretty much unanimous that everything he did in late 99 was the drizzling shits? Most retro podcasts love that run and always put over his work. Personally I enjoyed it too. I think it's just one of those things that's better in hindsight as it's just so ridiculous and over the top and Boss Man was so all in on it that you can't help but appreciate it. Boss Man was also just super funny during it with some of the lines he had. Gems such as: "Pepper's dead, I'm hardcore, and you're a DUMB SON OF A B***H!" (after cooking Al Snow's dog Pepper, tricking him into eating his dog, and then beating him up) "Ummmmm tastes like chicken" (after taking a bite out of Pepper), "Hey Mrs. White now that you're a single woman again do yah wanna be with a real man like me" (hitting on Big Show's widowed mother at her deceased husband's funeral. Like wtf lol) "YAH HEAR THAT PAUL WHITE YOU"RE A BIG NATY BASTARD AND YOUR MAMA SAID SO, WHAT KIND OF MORALS DO YOU HAVE?" (taunting Big Show after going out of his way to go to his mother's house and get her to admit that he was illegitimate and then actually having the gall to question her morals after he crashed her husband's funeral and hitched the casket to the back of his car and dragged it away and attempted to kill her son with tear gas.) "WHOSE MY DADDAY? WHERE"S MY DADDAY? WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" As far as him not being popular at the time with fans I think a lot of it has to do with the Attitude Era being all about cool characters. There was nothing cool about 1999 Big Boss Man. He was a grizzled looking guy in his late 30's who was a retread from the late 80's-early 90's Hulkamania era, had one of the most monotonous theme songs ever, and was clearly past his prime in ring even though I did think he did work smart and did a good job of working around him likely being broke down and not having the physical gifts he had in his prime. He wasn't supposed to be someone you were supposed to like. He was a mean vile heel with no redeemable qualities that you wanted to see get beat up for all this sick crap he was doing. Was it go away heat? Possibly but I don't think him being popular was an issue as he wasn't supposed to be popular with the character and role he had.

Yeah, I’ll have to go with Punk in 2011 and much of 2012 too. He was clearly over and putting on great performances on the stick and inside the ring, I just wasn’t down with the “ROH boys outclass the OVW boys” sentiment among fans he was generating, and how he was mining heat at Cena’s expense as the rebel fighting the idealistic and allegedly “uncool” face (even though the philanthropy he was doing was beyond cool and totally North Pole).
David Starr, before the allegations. And without going into details beyond our boards, I tend to have a “bleeding heart” on a number of issues in the real world. But Starr as a face/tweener reminded me too much of those guilt trippy, hyper-serious commentators (or overbearing debaters I’d run into on and off social media) who act as if everything currently in the world is terrible and we’re all doomed. I can’t rock with that sort of mentality, sorry.
Bobby Roode whenever he tried to be a valiant face, because he fell too much into the “This Business/This Company/Blood And Sweat!” cliches for me. And normally I think he’s a great talent, but I like him more when he’s having fun as a Glorious Dirty Dawg or as a rich prick with Beer Money.

Shawn in 1996-97 was absolutely unbearable. Why exactly was anyone supposed to like this arrogant douchebag? I just wanted to see Vader, Mankind, Owen, Austin....or anyone demolish the guy.

Even though he seems like an absolute dude of a person, nothing the Rock ever did in wrestling even remotely entertained me. Dumb catchphrases with incredibly mind-numbing delivery, backed by matches that were only good if he could be carried by his opponent. To me, he was the late-90s equivalent to the Ultimate Warrior: Somehow dazzled people on the mic by spewing absolutely mindless nonsense, and then having matches with a lot of hype around them with opponents who had to bust ass to make them watchable.
In fact, Hulk Hogan's last great act in wrestling was carrying the Rock to the best match he ever had by an long, LONG shot, just like he had done for Warrior 12 years earlier.

Sami Callihan. Like he's not BAD but he just comes off as corny as all hell to me. I wanted Omega to whip his ass in 30 seconds and Kenny is not whatvI would call "my guy ".
And on that note, Eric Young. He's always been the runt of Team Canada/moron to me so when he tries to be this serious heel, he's another cornball.

Zack Ryder.
I respect the hell out of the way he got himself over, but as a talent I never saw much in him.
I hear he's doing good things outside of WWE now but I haven't seen any of it.
