Vince trying to book Mania main events a year in advance. Yet they cannot even book their shows consistently week to week.
A LOT can happen in a year, it’s better to keep your options somewhat flexible imo.
I seem to recall the early Wrestlemanias were hyped well in advance, but without any hint of who would be on the card. The matches for Wrestlemania would be announced in January or February (apart from anything involving the Royal Rumble winner), and any feuds or storylines were played out in those ten to twelve weeks beforehand. There is a significant difference between then and now, however; back then, Vince had a crew of bookers who could plan out, on short notice, a three-month angle from January to April for _everyone_ who was likely to appear at Wrestlemania. We're talking from the main event to the curtain-jerkers - and it seemed so _effortless_ to do so.
I could go into annoying, old-man detail about why it seemed to work, but suffice it to say that a) there were rules that faces obeyed and heels broke; b) there were characters that fans cared about because the wrestling world was a microcosm of the real one, and c) those who planned out the cards knew their wrestling and knew to keep things reasonably simple. Today's wrestling is overthought, with far too "inside" stuff seeping out into the ring; and particularly in WWE, there's little sense that anything that happens is important.
