I don’t share the opinion of these shorts being bad per say (the first is sort of a weird guilty pleasure) but they do feel like first drafts. Like if there was some tweaking to the timing and such, they’d be way better. Which is sort of a shame because the animation is on point. The animation is absolutely perfect, especially the inclusion of TAS-style animation errors. Both the Very Short Treks thus far could stand to be shorter, though.

Like, (and I’m only putting it in spoilers just for the sake of those who didn’t see it) {Spoiler}someone pointed out if it were done the other way around where Spock would put in a funny blooper and then they’d get more and more tragic until he finds the end one and it all happens as it does, it’d be a much more darkly funny thing than what we got. And that all feels like something that needed more fine tuning.

I've only seen the pilot, the Lower Decks crossover, and the musical but I really need to watch more of the show, I enjoy how much it'll just go for it on things and isn't afraid to just be dumb fun.

It's pretty much the closest to a live action episodic Star Trek show in the modern day as could possibly happen. I only wish there were more episodes a season for those sort of episodes.

Strange New Worlds is the most consistently good Trek show ever IMO. I think part of that is because of the relatively small amounts of episodes per season. Like even DS9 and TNG at their peaks had some absolute garbage, fillery episodes in otherwise great seasons. But they tended to run 26 episodes per season (with DS9 S1 and TNG S2 being a little shorter) as opposed to the leaner 10 episodes per season of SNW.

I think ten episodes is the sweet spot for the shows that tell one story over a whole season, while Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks could definitely benefit from 13 episode seasons – enough that every main cast character gets a spotlight episode on top of regular episodes where the main leads take centre stage, but not so many as to need filler.

Nothing wrong with filler episodes, the TNG episode Lower Decks is a filler episode. In DS9, Magnificent Ferengi is a great filler episode.

Nothing wrong with filler episodes, the TNG episode Lower Decks is a filler episode. In DS9, Magnificent Ferengi is a great filler episode. Nothing wrong with good episodes that don't fit neatly into a serial format. I'm talking garbage like "Shades of Gray" or "Let He Who Is Without Sin." Or that one episode with Ezri's shitty family.
Granted I didn't like the TNG episode "Lower Decks" that much either. But Magnificent Ferengi was brilliant.

I was going to say, I couldn't consider either Lower Decks or The Magnificient Ferengi as filler episodes. Lower Decks gave us a unique look at the Enterprise and our main characters from the bottom up, and continued the story arc for a one off character from seasons prior. TNG did that very rarely. And The Magnificent Ferengi could be considered a bottle show, since it was set on not-DS9 Empok Nor, but it's tremendously entertaining with Iggy Pop as the driest most sardonic Vorta ever, and a new take on Ferengi episodes. Now Shades of Gray, oh yeah that is THE filler episode.

To be a fair guy considering my sadness about Lower Decks, more SNW is not something I’ll take lightly. It’s still a show I genuinely would love to see more “filler” of, just give me more mishaps and adventures with those guys.

Glad it has been renewed. This is the first Star Trek series I have managed to get into. Brilliant show.

Nothing wrong with filler episodes, the TNG episode Lower Decks is a filler episode. In DS9, Magnificent Ferengi is a great filler episode. Neither of those are "filler" episodes. The only example of one from either show would be Shades of Grey.

It really depends on what people count as filler. Star Trek doesn't have to have some huge overarching plot, though sometimes that is welcome and awesome. Star Trek was originally explore strange new worlds and seek out new civilizations. Some would consider that the definition of filler. However, I don't think it's filler because the exploration is the point.
