Show ended up being #5 for the night so guess it was just a down night for cable in general, though on the whole AEW ratings do definitely seem to be going through a bit of a rough patch. Yeah the low demo is the more concerning aspect to me as AEW is already catering much more to a niche audience and when that audience is cannibalising itself and dwindling it's never a good thing. Interesting part is that even if it's down to 4 people in the crowd Khan has enough money to keep it going indefinitely

This week is a statistical anomaly but we'll have to see how the next few weeks go. If the demo rebounds next week and stays in the top 5-10 in rankings, then we write this off as a weird outlier and move on. If it's the sign of a trend and the demo stays around this level and falls down even further in rankings when cable TV viewership isn't so weirdly low, then it's a concern.

I just listened to Dave talk about the rating on Observer Radio. He said we shouldn't overreact to the bad number but we should monitor it for future trends. The PPV did very well, the week before did well, and this didn't do well. He broke the current trends down to 3 age groups:
- M18-34: Doing really well year over year. It's their highest growing audience. - M35-49: Doing pretty poorly year over year. It did well last week but was really down this week for whatever reason. - 50+: It's been gaining over the year hence why their demo was down but the audience wasn't terribly down. But this isn't the key demo so it's not helping here but he did note that it can help PPV buys since these folks tend to have money to buy shows.

They should have gone with the face MJF ,it was something unique and special. But what I learned is that TK really likes to play safe. Not even that. If you wanted to keep him a heel, fine. Everyone would get it. But, I think the extending teasing of a face turn that everyone was popping for and then abandoning it to double down on the same stuff — that might do damage. There also just aren’t any good stories in AEW right now. Since his fued with Punk there'd been those moments of humanity, the sense redemption was possible. That's compelling and gives a reason to watch each week, those little moments where the mask slips. Same with Hangman's rise which was as much battling his demons as it was his opponents. When it's character driven there's essentially a reward for watching each week. Of course there's still elements of that but it's vague and there's been plenty of examples of them throwing away any character growth (eg. Scorpio, Garcia). With the added issue MJF is blatantly saying the payoff for all this is over a year away. There's less trust that it's worth sitting through everything for a worthwhile eventual payoff. It all adds to a sense that you'll usually enjoy aew if you tune in but won't regret missing it if you don't.

I also think just, in general, AEW gets a great deal of leeway for just abandoning their own stories for the sake of a swerve. If it were any other television show dropping character development at the midpoint, they’d rightly be called out and they’d see their audience trust dwindle. In the case of MJF, like you said, it sucks even more because he’s so much more interesting when he’s not playing the same notes.
