I remember some people (mostly not here, granted) trying their damnedest to convince themselves Voodoo Kin Mafia was any good. Also, Aces and Eights. Was Hogan around for Aces & Eights? I was hoping we'd get some Aces & Eights on TLF. LOL Yep! Bully Ray turning on Hogan was how he was (eventually) revealed to be the leader all along. It was extremely convoluted, though, and involved Bully Ray catching a bunch of beatings from the group and facing them multiple times, though I guess since the reveal was him winning the world title, the argument could be made it was an acceptable cost. It's still stupid, though.

Pretty much anything that was defended with little more than, “At least it’s something different.”
It always reminded me of a story in Ole Anderson’s book. Harley Race was booking and had an idea Ole thought was stupid and made no sense. He asked Harley why he wanted to do it, and Harley replied that the fans would never expect it. Ole responded with something along the lines of “They’ll never expect it because it doesn’t make any sense,” and went on to say that if he went in the ring, dropped his trunks, and took a shit, no one would expect that either but no one would come back the next week.

I appreciate the effort, but it was still really stupid and drawn out

Can I say just the general objectification of women during the Attitude/Ruthless Aggression eras? It is crazy just how often I will see grown men bring up bra and panties matches as a peak for the women's division in WWE, or complain about how most of the women's division isn't just there for titillation.

To add to the Booker/HHH one, more recent racist promos this time involving Japanese guys with Nakamura/Jinder and Takeshita/MJF. Neither got as much blowback as you'd think they would. I know neither were at Wrestlemania or as high profile but on paper they're essentially the same thing as Booker/HHH. In both cases the heel was racist towards the face, mocking their English and stuff, then both times the heel won the match afterwards too. Can't speak to MJF/Takeshita, but I imagine one reason Jinder/Nakamura didn't get the same blowback is just the absurdity of an Indian-Canadian who played an evil foreigner most of his WWE career making racist jokes.

I appreciate the effort, but it was still really stupid and drawn out It'd have had its own continuity problems, but they probably should have just had him say that he tried to do things the "right way", but it just got him chewed up and spat out, and that he could keep on being a goody two-shoes chump, or he could rule TNA like a king, and that the choice would have been obvious to us, too, in his shoes. Something like that. But TNA at this time loved to try to feel oh-so-clever, so they always overcomplicated things.

I'm not Cornette type or anything but, I NEVER saw the appeal of Joey Ryan. At all. Why is it that hating on Joey Ryan's offensive gimmick is link to Jim Cornette? Cornette can have his opinions, but a lot of people, including myself, were turned off by Joey Ryan and we didn't need a 60+ mad man on his podcast telling us why he sucked.

Fans will overlook a lot of small things if they're entertained, but yeah, it still needs to have a certain logic to it and yeah, Ole's got the right of it there. It still needs to be a line of logic they can follow. Like, we don't have to agree with a heel or face's actions if we can still see WHY they'd do something and how it fits them, and it makes for bad TV if all you care about is a swerve for swerve's sake just to feel smarter than your paying audience.

I don't think "Cornette type" was about Joey in particular, so much as his very set in his ways attitude towards professional wrestling and how it informs his opinion on the sillier stuff. In hip-hop, we use the term "oldhead" for those types, the ones that refuse to believe the genre should have evolved beyond about '98. And like the poster here, I have found myself reflexively distancing myself from the oldheads when I'm talking about my problems with mumble rap and whatever the hell Lil Pump is.

D'Angelo Deniro as a sort of hidden gem, not sure how much of this sentiment has survived into 2023 but it was a rambling, aimless character that would make even the excesses of Bray Wyatt turn their head. The WWE character was a much better funnel for his charisma that half thought-out gangster gimmick.
I once defended the HHH/Booker deal having only seen bits of the feud (not that the bits I saw were any better) and holy shit was that awkward once I was properly schooled.

The cap on the HHH/Booker T feud is that, at Mania, HHH hit the Pedigree, and then, 24 seconds later (count them on the Network) got a finger over Booker T for a three count.
It came across as a total burial.

Goldust. Like, don't get me wrong, Dustin Rhodes as a wrestler is great, but it always baffled me around the time of Orlando Jordan's TNA run that he was universally decried while Goldust was held up as one of the highlights of New Gen/Attitude Era when that run contained gay/trans panic tropes way worse than any of the admittedly awful squirty cream stuff, and y'know, Jordan was actually bi rather than a straight guy who could do a face turn by denying being queer. Huh, never thought about this before, but you're right. I love Dustin's "he's still got it" run with Cody in 2014ish though. But yeah the classic stuff, looking back, was really not good. (Gotta really consider how I write him in my fantasy booking that we've talked about now that I think about it).

More modern era Goldust is usually great, like, even what I can remember of the gay aspects of his character in 2002ish with Booker was more presented as endearing eccentricity than gay panic (though I'm sure people with better knowledge than me have had things to say on the Tourettes impression side), but everything from the original WWF run was... Yikes.

Oh I can assure you his tourette's run was catastrophic The coprolalia symptoms is an extremely rare one anyway but he also got it from an electric shock and kept doing it in non kayfabe interviews It is GRIM

It's weird that despite Lita being so beloved many fans will still defend Snitsky at any opportunity. snitzky was funny but I would never defend it as a good idea lol
