What are some film franchises (ie, 3 or more movies) that were once huge hits, but are now mostly forgotten by the public? The Missing in Action films come to mind.

Naked Gun Police Academy Ernest Goes to... Problem Child Honey I Shrunk the.... Ernest is not forgotten. Ernest will never be forgotten. Going old school, The Thin Man was a detective movie that came out in 1934. Between then and 1947 it had five sequels made. Nowadays I imagine only hardcore old-timey film buffs would've ever heard of it and it doesn't seem like anybody in Hollywood is considering a reboot anytime soon.

I will never forget The Naked Gun series (and Police Squad). So much fun... even the third movie.

I haven't seen Police Academy mentioned or referenced for decades. They seem largely forgotten.
American Pie and many of the 90s/early 2000s teen movies, I can't see connecting with today's teens at all. And will likely be forgotten. I gave American Pie a rewatch last year, I still enjoyed it.

Blondie's film series had 28 films between 1938 to 1950. How many of you knew that until I mentioned this?

The non Disney animated movies of the eighties like American Tail or the Land Before Time. They made a big splash, spawned sequel after sequel and are barely ever referenced now.
Seriously The Land Before Time spawned a dozen sequels and an animated series but nobody talks about it.

Seriously The Land Before Time spawned a dozen sequels and an animated series but nobody talks about it. And American Tail IIRC had a series after the second movie, then the next movie (direct to video) pretty much retconned the second movie and series as a dream of Fievel so they could keep the city setting for it.

Seriously The Land Before Time spawned a dozen sequels and an animated series but nobody talks about it. Bluth’s sequels tended to be underwhelming though, Land Before Time in particular was just cranking out direct to video that barely got a nod. Someone mentioned American Pie. Along those lines, Porky’s, which can be considered its spiritual predecessor. Also, Revenge of the Nerds.

It absolutely doesn't hold up to modern "thinking", but the American Pie series (minus the some of the direct to DVD offshoots) is great. Even the less than stellar (the last two, IMO) still had some fun parts. Police Academy is a good example. I never hear anyone talk about this. I bought the blu-ray box sent and get through the first two and haven't gone back. The first one is solid, but the second was rough. I remember liking it a lot more when I was younger than I did when I last watched it. I have a feeling it only gets "worse". LOL

All those "Not Another X Movie" or "Scary/Epic/(insert name here) Movie" type parodies seem to have been mostly flushed from the collective consciousness of humanity outside of the 2 that were pretty funny and good.
And I might as well say Girls Gone Wild volumes 1 thru 14,007. Those were all the rage for a while.

I loved the first two "Major League" movies as a kid and yet don't care about the franchise. "Hot Shots!" is a similar case and coincidentally both feature Charlie Sheen.

Major League is an absolute classic. Major League II is decent because of Uecker (sp). Major League: Back to The Minors is a steaming pile of dogsh*t that should never be viewed. I walked out of a dollar movie theater after about a half hour. It is so f'ing bad.

With Revenge of the Nerds I think its only remembered by modern audiences for the rape scene.
