Dragon Warrior/Quest, Chrono Trigger and of course Dragonball he's part of some huge nerd culture in the 90's.

Really motivates me to want to play Chrono Trigger again. Been wanting to for awhile anyway but is kind of the main thing he's associated with I'm like really into, is pretty amusing how clearly a lot of the characters in their official art are just kind of redressed Dragon Ball designs. Between this and the composer Dragon Quest 12 is probably going to feel like a really morbid end of an era when it finally comes out. His style did have a lot of overlap from project to project. That's not terribly uncommon.

There were 2 things I knew every teen was sketching in school....the famous suzuki "S" logo and dragonball characters.
the dude's influence on just the artistic space should have multiple statues made in his honor.

Damn, RIP. I’d just gotten into watching the OG Dragonball series this past year, too.

hard not to get a sense of malaise/dread/sadness or whatever you want to call it with the sand land game coming up and DQ12 too. didn't think about that until now.

This hurts. This, really, really hurts. Growing up Dragon Ball(specifically Z) was my life. Being a kid at the time, Gohan became one of the first characters I ever actually lived vicariously through. All the friends I made over the years because we all loved anime, usually all getting into it cause of Dragon Ball, all the imaginary Kamehamehas we’d fire and all of us “going Super Saiyan”. Not to mention all the other series that are cornerstones of my life whose creators were inspired by Toriyama, such as Naruto. Not all the video games inspired by Dragon Quest and to a lesser extent Chrono Trigger. I’d dare say Toriyama is the grandfather of basically the modern Japanese anime/manga and video game scenes. Losing Kazuki Takahashi a couple of years ago so suddenly, and now this. It's really sad. And Miura as well. We’re unfortunately losing basically all the people who else works established the Western idea of “anime”. Miura gave us the iconic giant anime sword with Berserk’s Dragonslayer. Takahashi and Toriyama gave us the hilariously spiky hair, and Toriyama also gave us ki auras and especially Super Saiyan forms.

I’m absolutely gutted. I probably wouldn’t be in Japan right now if my friends hadn’t gotten hugely into Dragonball Z something like 20+ years ago.
What a legacy, though. The heir to Osamu Tezuka. Gone too soon.

I can imagine that there are going to be quite a flood of various people in the world of manga and anime creation that are going to be coming out with their own tributes in the near future. Such as these two. I feel bad though that my initial thought was that this was unexpected and if anyone was gonna go, I would have thought Masako Nozowa before Toriyama.

This one hurts. It’s no exaggeration to say that I would not be an anime and manga fan if it weren’t for Toriyama and Dragonball.
R.I.P to an absolute legend

Damn, man. Hell of a thing to wake up to.
There’s very few people in anime, or the entirety of global art, that had a style and humor so distinct that you know who’s involved the instant you see it. Especially someone who’s been involved in so much stuff creatively, whether he was writing and drawing or just doing concepts.
It all feels so…surreal. Hell, the Sand Land game is out next month and they were just showcasing it in videos the other day so the statement saying he was working on things even near 70 wasn’t wrong. It’ll be weird to have stuff carry on without him and leaves a legacy very few can have.
Rest in Peace.

I never got into Dragon Ball as a kid. It got huge in Perú while I was around 9 and being a bit of an outcast at school, I wanted nothing to do with this mega popular thing. After all, how can something all my bullies enjoy be any good?
Fastforward around 6 years and my best friend just would not shut up about it. We actually bonded over him telling me about all the crazy stuff that happened there. It was infectuos and it peaked my curiosity. So in about a week I binged EVERYTHING. Classic DB, Z, even the movies and GT (those were less special but still). I couldn't believe I had wasted so much time not watching this marvel of a show, which is somehow still not as good as the absolutely stellar manga.
Dragon Ball became one of my favorite things in the world, but it was also the vehicle that started my longest lasting friendship. It had action, comedy, but more importantly heart, all from the mind of a fun loving genius from across the world.
Reading the news hurt like no other death outside of my family and friends has hurt. The world owes Toriyama a lot, whether we know it or not, but the least I can do is say "thank you", from the bottom of my heart.

Dragonball along with Sailor Moon and Pokemon got me into anime and, in the grander scheme of things, got me into Japan and helped me making my path in life. It was too soon. Godspeed, Toriyama-san.
