f***, Dragon Ball Z was such a phenomenon that it what made many British kids moan to their parents to get Sky/Cable TV so they can get Cartoon Network to watch it. The final fight with Buu was genuinely one of the highest rated things ever for a cable airing in the UK. That's accomplishment over here.
RIP.

Dragon Ball Z was an entire generation's first anime.
That, or Pokemon.

Man. it can’t be understated how influential Toriyama was for cartooning period, not just in one region of the world. RIP. This is from a Dragonball Super WATCH PARTY in Mexico That many people gathered just to watch the show on a Projector... it looks like a major sporting event is taking place or a big time concert That says it all about how big Dragonball is. Speaking of Mexico

The people in Mexico went HAM for Dragon Ball unlike probably any other country. During this same time there was a strip club in Mexico advertising free lap dances if Goku beat Jiren. That’s how seriously they take the series there.

In case that had me shook a bit this morning, last night I was watching DBZ abdridged and finished on the first Cooler movie. Goku talks to a bird that passed named Toriyama and said he was taken too soon.
Saw Oda's response this morning and it broke me. I spent a few years as a kid waiting every month to get driven to SunCoast Videos to buy the newest DBZ VHS and getting light headed with friends trying to turn Super Saiyan so this morning has been said.
To quote Oda I hope that heaven is just as pleasant as the one you envisioned in your manga, sensei.

I did not grow up watching Dragon Ball as it was after my childhood. But I feel a total mass of pain for everyone here and all the fans all over the globe. What a huge loss to the industry. These are my sentiments stated far better than I could have.

What Walt was to Disney and Stan Lee was to Marvel, Toriyama was synonymous with Anime and paved the way for the future. There would be no One Piece, Naruto, Bleach or My Hero Academia without him.

Dragon Ball and Pokemon are what got me into anime in the 90s. Original DB is still my favorite anime of all time. Haven't had this much of a gut punch since JDF passing last year.
RIP to a legend. Sadly all the Dragon Balls turn to stone when their creator dies.

RIP. Will never get over the elation of coming home after school to catch Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon back-to-back.
Quick story: My little cousin was OBSESSED with the series and had all the merch my uncle could afford. My uncle was a good guy, but very stoic and kept to his interests. He'd usually be working or in his room when I stayed over. One time we were watching one of the DBZ movies and my cousin, as he often would, was hyped and stomping around mimicking the kicks and punches. My uncle comes out to tell him to be quiet but then looks at the screen for a few seconds, sees all the fight animation, and goes "Hey ... that's not too bad!".

Not a big fan of Dragon Ball. But damn much respect to the guy for helping shape SO MANY people's childhoods to this day.
RIP.

It hit my local news too Akira Toriyama, the creator of the best-selling Dragon Ball and other popular anime who influenced Japanese comics, has died, his studio said Friday. He was 68. Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga series, which started in 1984, has sold millions of copies globally and was adapted into hugely popular animated TV shows, video games and films. Toriyama died March 1 of a blood clot in his brain, Bird Studio said in a statement. “He was working enthusiastically on many projects, and there was still much he was looking forward to accomplishing,” the studio wrote. A new TV adaptation of Toriyama’s “Sand Land,” a desert adventure story released in 2000 and later adapted into a 2023 anime movie, is due to be released on Disney+ in the spring. Messages of condolences and grief from fellow creators and fans filled social media. Eiichiro Oda, creator of the blockbuster manga “One Piece,” said Toriyama’s presence was like a “big tree” to younger artists. “He showed us all these things manga can do, a dream of going to another world,” Oda said in a statement. His death leaves “a hole too big to fill,” Oda added. Bird Studio thanked fans for more than 40 years of support. “We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.” Born in Aichi prefecture in central Japan in 1955, Toriyama made his manga debut in 1978 with the adventure comic “Wonder Island,” published in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. His Dr. Slump series, which started in 1980, was his first major hit. It made him a celebrity, but Toriyama avoided the spotlight. In 1982, he told Japanese public broadcast NHK: “I just want to keep writing manga.” Dragon Ball, the story of a boy named Son Goku and his quest for seven magical balls that can make wishes come true, has sold 260 million copies altogether, according to the studio. Toriyama also designed characters for the video game series Dragon Quest. He received awards in the manga industry and beyond, including France’s Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. www.centralillinoisproud.com/news/national/akira-toriyama-dragon-ball-creator-dies-at-age-68/?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=t.co

Besides WWE, the Dragon Ball franchise was my only other love. A hero of mine is gone and he will be missed. Thank you for the memories. ❤️

I remember kids would play DBZ on the playground during recess and play-fight each other.
