As a huge fan of Dragonball and Chrono Trigger, and a strong appreciator of Dragon Quest, this hurts immensely.

I think as well as Latin America you have the Middle East and China/SE Asia where Dragonball is arguably more popular than Star Wars, Harry Potter, and the Marvel and DC universes.
RIP.

Unsurprisingly, this is full-page headline news on the front pages of all the newspapers in Japan this morning.

The Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs just an hour ago mourned the loss of Akira Toriyama. To not go heavy into it as a topic, that's not a minor thing. The president of France also just posted a framed picture he has of Goku and Majin Buu that was personally addressed to him by Toriyama (and a little Goku doodle off to the side). Shows you just how beloved his work was by the world over.

I want to talk about a core memory I have from dragon ball z. I remember sitting on the kitchen floor facing the den eating the raisins out of the raisin Bran box watching the cell games. And while that doesn't seem all the exciting or memorable it was just a happy memory of a simpler time, munching away watching dragon ball. So thank you for the memories and good times Toriyama, may you rest in peace

Loved Dragonball Z as a kid. The past 4 months I watched all of Dragonball, Z, Super, and GT. Sad to hear about this, i guess it’s time to gather the dragon balls 😭😭

The fact that so many worldwide are paying tribute shows how much of an impact he had.

The more I think about it; Akira Toriyama was as influential and important to Japanese animation as Walt Disney was to Western animation. And arguably, Toriyama had more of an impact internationally than even Walt.

Disney is one of the influences in early Manga That and the better argument for the Walt Disney figure of Japan is Osamu Tezuka or, from a more modern era, Hayao Miyazaki. Toriyama is in his own category of cultural importance, though.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy paid tribute to him The two go way back. Horii, Sakaguchi, and Toriyama were the "Dream Team" behind Chrono Trigger. Toriyama also worked with Sakaguchi's company Mistwalker on Blue Dragon.

Holy shit this hits hard. I’ve always been a Dragon Ball fan dating back the the failed 13 episode run on YTV in the 90’s, and over the past year I’ve done a huge deep dive into Dragon Ball. Read the manga 3 times, and watched DB, Kai, Super and all the movies and specials. Every night when I go to bed I put on DBZA or one of Totally Not Mark’s reviews.
And that’s without even mentioning my love of Chrono Trigger. Toriyama’s work has been a massive part of my life for 30 years. I’m in shock, I’m at a firearms course and am struggling to hold back tears. I wanna bawl
