There's a ten mile wide gap between Jim Lee and the other artists at Image. Lee has anatomy, expression, scale, proportion, and page placement down pat. Sure on the surface there are obvious simularities but if you compare him to the rest of those Image bozos there's no competition. Lee was the best artist they ever had, no question. Rob, well........look how big that gun is! I would like to disagree with this statement. I have always been a fan of Erik Larsen's artwork, Marc Silvestri has always been a top-notch artist and Jim Valentino was not really a great artist but a storyteller. That was the main problem with the Image artists, I felt... the artwork was so 'EXTREME' that the story suffered. Larsen and Valentino always tried to keep the story front and center, while Lee (Portacio, McFarlane) do great artwork 'pieces' (covers, posters, splash pages) but the story disappears. Silvestri was the best at trying to balance the two... And then there was Rob. EDIT: Another point... Say what you want about 90s comics, but they had tin foil covers, and tin foil covers rock. But the greatest comic enhancement from the 90's HAS to be Valiant Vision glasses. A comic enhancement that could be used with ANY comic.

I once won this comic at the local Family Fun Center about a mercenary who was given HIV so that his blood would turn into fire and instantly cauterize any bullet wound. I haven't been able to find it on wikipedia, but it really did seem like the worst/weirdest power ever.

Jim Lee is a great artist, still is. he ust gets lumped in with the others because he helped found Image. a lot of people ignore that Wildstorm is and has been one of the better imprints since around '97.

Somehow, a part of me feels that they had Wolverine claw up Thing's face just so he could wear that dumbass helmet while holding a gun. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) The 90's, for me as a comic enthusiast and collector, mostly suck. There were some gems sprinkled in there such as the creation of Deadpool and Gambit, and the Chris Claremont/Jim Lee re-launch of the X-Men title. However, the bad far outweighed the good. Atrocities of the 90's include: - The Reign of the Supermen - Knightsquest - The Spider-Man clone saga - Guns - Pouches - More guns and pouches - Extreme EVERYTHING

No idea how I forgot some of those. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I also forgot: - Electric Blue Superman - New less functional costumes - Ponytails for everyone! (even Clark freaking Kent) - Die, come back to life, repeat - You know that virtuous character with strong morals? They're gonna be an asshole now.

- Ridiculous armor that looks stupid - Lame tie-in comics with stupid things (Hi, NFL SuperPro!) - Comics written by wrestlers that feature large amounts of text, horrible art, and a plot that doesn't even make any sense.

'course, Superboy, Steel and the Cyborg-Superman all subsequently being written as awesome characters helps it out a bit. worst thing about the 90's though has to be the insesant whining from heroes. in an attempt to make the characters more "relateable" they would be given more and more angst to the point where you just wanted to put them all out of their overly muscled misery. the fact that they often didn't even act heroic at all didn't help (I'm looking at YOU, Youngblood).

Venom (and his subsequent neutering from villain to "Lethal Protector") was just stupid. As was Carnage and all the other symbiotes.

Their was a few titles in their that I do enjoy. Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight was pretty awesome. The Going Sane story arc is one of my favorite Batman tales.

Ah, 90s comics.
The first thing that drove me nuts was when Image came out, DC and Marvel then tried to ape their style. So you had everyone and his brother trying to draw like Jim Lee. I like Jim's work, but it got annoying to see 100 different comics drawn the same way. Worst was seeing someone trying to ape his style but not quite pulling it off.
A lot of comics then did this horrible thing where every page looked like a series of pin-ups. The storytelling was gone. You had page after page of nice pin-up looking work, but the flow was awful. Take a look at the stuff by Eisner, Dave Gibbons, etc to get a good idea of good storytelling.
The multiple cover idea was a nice rip-off.
The multiple cross-over idea was a rip-off as well.
Foil covers jacked up the price and you got nothing special for it. Big deal.
"Giant-Sized" Issues were usually 22 pages of story, a few pin ups and a filler story...but cost a lot.
The whole "badass" hero thing got really really tired. Thank Frank Miller for that one. Maybe Todd McFarlane as well. I don't mind the badass hero, but when every comic in existence has people grimacing through the whole story with big massive phallic guns, it gets a little tiring after a while.
The women heroes chose some really interesting costumes. And some panels you can tell the artist copied a porno mag.

It would have been amusing if there was a 90s superhero comic that had an anti-steroids story, considering pretty much every character looked like they were on roids.

IIRC, Captain America did a story where Cap got some designer drugs in his bloodstream, causing him to go nuts, due to it mixing with the Super Soldier Serum. Eventually, they remove the SSS from Cap, forcing him to having to regularly train to keep his physical form.
