Why does it seem that fans only want heroes who are badasses. You know, the kind who always break the rules, are always angry, act like jerkasses most of the time, etc.
I never really understood what was so great about these badass dark heroes so much. Can comeone tell me?

They get to do what we can't do, not unless we want to break the law.

No idea personally, I all ways prefered the nice guy super heroes and the bad ass guys are usually assholes who ruin group dynamics *Thanks for f***ing up the JSA Magog*.

I like a balance. Sometimes I want The Man With No Name, and sometimes I want Gene Autry.

I can understand why people like them...but I don't want ALL my heroes to be super badasses. They're fun from time to time, but I like the nice guy heroes as well. And other archetypes, too.

Because they aren't as easily duped by the villain.

Because they aren't as easily duped by the villain. That's not a nice-guy hero trait. That's just universal idiocy.

They typically have more character depth than a white meat babyface.

I like bad-ass heroes, but a "nice guy" hero who isn't too grating on the nerves are preferred by me.

They are typically mistaken to have more character depth than a white meat babyface. FTFM.

I'm not saying I want all heroes to be strict, by the book, boy scouts. I'm just getting tired of most heroes these days being angsty jerky badasses (or worse, the kind of anti hero who saves somebody's life then kills them anyway... because they can) because that's what people only seem to want these days.
I don't mind the occasional badass here or there, especially if it's in contrast to another hero. I just don't want them ALL to be "badasses".

Its a tough balance I think.
Goody-goody heroes are less likely to take action. They want to put off doing physical harm to someone if they can help it because its not right.
Badass heroes will take action right away because they're badasses.
People like action!
It can be done both ways. I always though Ichcigo from Bleach was perfect at that. He's as babyface as babyface gets, but they spin it so he's all about action. Its like "I'm going to kill you right now because its the right thing to do!"

Personally, I'd like to see a hero who constantly tries to do the right thing (and NEVER acts out in a "cool badass" way), but not only does he never get appreciated for it, but everybody thinks he's a complete jerkass who just wants to ruin everybody else's fun.
And still have him persevere and never turn.

Because people don't like characters who don't have internal conflict and are immune to dark emotions. "Badass dark heroes" as you described them are as old as "Sing O muse of the wrath of Achilles".

I actually like Magog. does a parody of Cable deserve the push he's getting right now? hell no. but he's an interesting wrinkle in the JSA dynamic. Superman is the most badass superhero ever, IMO strictly because he's so unashamedly The Good Guy. esp the DCAU version. *see "World of Cardboard" speech*

Because they aren't as easily duped by the villain. because killing every bad guy worked out so well for The Authority. hey, Hawksmoor, how's that Zombie Wasteland doing for you?

Magog is a horrible character in the JSA books. He drags everything down and because of him the team has split. He's okay in his own title and it was awesome seeing the Shield point him out as the Punk he is but in JSA? He can go f*** off because he comes off as a totally unlikeable prick each time he shows up.
