Eh, I could see why they'd pick the "insulting European history" thing, but I mean.....the movie is based on a goddamn comic book, not the exact mythology. The characters can be whatever the creator wants them to be. Stringer Bell can be anybody... Wonder if they have a problem with Thor being played by an Australian?

I could almost see their point in light of the whole Last Airbender controversy, but it's too different of a scenario to compare really. And considering how many Nazi f***s I have the misfortune of knowing, I'll gladly go see this movie in theaters just to shit on them. And I NEVER go see movies.

Wasn't there a big thing after they cast an almost all-white cast to play the Asian students in that 21 movie?

Wasn't there a big thing after they cast an almost all-white cast to play the Asian students in that 21 movie? Im someone who thinks that stuff should be as close to the original source material as possible. I think that the creator made the material specific way. Black Panther was made to be a Black guy, so I do not want to see Daniel Craig in that role. If its a major role thats where I have a problem, but if its a minor one its no big deal. But even stuff like 21 did bother me because thats not how it was written. Now the whole alternate Universe thing anything can happen and there is no way that anyone can complain because well, they were written different IE Sam Jackson as Furry.

To be fair, Jackson as Fury still follows canon. Just the canon of the Ultimate universe. But yeah, I'm with you most of the time. Like say The Last Airbender. Why were there white people, let alone white people as the main trio of good guys? Everyone in the cartoon are Asian people....

Rumor has it that Kenneth Branagh who has been a big fan of comic purposely casted Idris Elba in order to give a big f*** you to white supremacists who have high jacked Norse mythology as a soapbox for their beliefs.

So Heimdall is one of those legendary black vikings huh? Or black norse gods as you would have it. Not really. Heimdall is "supposed" to be white, but hell, it is f***ing Idris Elba! The guy can act his ass off, so I really don't care. Hell he could've been cast as Thor himself and I still wouldn't care. The thing to note is that Heimdall SHOULD be white if this was a LITERAL interpretation of Norse mythology. But it is MARVEL's interpretation. Which add a filter, and Marvel was never COMPLETELY faithful to Mythology. Thor being blonde is one of those things, and being cleanshaven for the longest time in the comics.

Don't get me wrong, I HATE Idris Elba being cast as Heimdall because I'm a comic book purist, but this is beyond ridiculous. I do however have to laugh at this being the second white comic book character that has been turned black via Idris Elba. The first being Roque in The Losers.

Stringer. Bell. Your complaint is inadequate. Go watch "Blazing Saddles".

I think it is possible to share this opinion without being a racist. There have been instances of people in almost every race getting upset because of what they felt was racial miscasting. These particular folk ARE racists, however. So I'm not trying to defend them, just the folks who feel that way without actually having a negative issue with other races.

I think Mark Millar said about this was: "who wants to see a movie with a bunch of racists anyway?"

Why aren't these clowns also upset about Natalie Portman being cast as Jane Foster? Or Stan Lee creating the comic book? I mean, they are Jewish, aren't they?
Racist f***s, go back under the rock you crawled out from under.

.....Seriously? Seriously? Not all the Asgardians are white....like Hogun. He's Asian. Hogun isn't Asgardian. He's a refugee from a pantheon of gods that was lost who used to live in the Himalayas. Don't get me wrong, I HATE Idris Elba being cast as Heimdall because I'm a comic book purist, but this is beyond ridiculous. Pretty much. Heimdall being portrayed by a black actor is wrong to me because I want to see the comic book on the big screen, but guys trying to use history or culture as an excuse for just being plain racist is so transparent.

I wouldn't go and see Thor if you want 'the comic book' on screen. They've made some BIG changes to canon.

Yup. And this is another reason why I'm not enthused with random black Heimdall: it kinda takes away from Hogun's angle as being that one guy who's different from the others.

at first I myself thought that it was misguided to cast a black guy as Heimdall just to spite racists, but Idris Elba's a great actor and the comic always played really fast and loose with the source material to begin with so big deal. I think it's hilarious that these guys are getting so worked up about a movie based on a comic book.

Look at this way, the Asgardians are (unless continuity has completely wiped it out) extraterrestrials in the first place who aren't really Gods. So, all bets are off, imo.
Thor's also depicted as a redhead in much of the mythology but no one has a problem with him being a blond.
