It doesn't surprise me. I used to work with a guy who wouldn't go see the movie Wild Wild West because the historical character of Jim West was a white man, and he shouldn't be played by a black man. Eventually I countered with:
You realize that the character of Jim West was created in the 1960's by a guy who first wanted to do a James Bond style series in the 50's? The studio wouldn't buy it, so he eventually got his wish by pitching a western series in the 60's when westerns were big? The studio execs didn't even realize that these cowboys were going to be all cloak and daggery.
Yes, I said daggery, even though it wasn't a word. He went on to try and say that it was based on some historical character, but I told him to go look it up online. He wouldn't do it, because he knows that I am the useless trivia master.

.....Seriously? Seriously? Not all the Asgardians are white....like Hogun. He's Asian. Hogun isn't Asgardian. He's a refugee from a pantheon of gods that was lost who used to live in the Himalayas. Don't get me wrong, I HATE Idris Elba being cast as Heimdall because I'm a comic book purist, but this is beyond ridiculous. Pretty much. Heimdall being portrayed by a black actor is wrong to me because I want to see the comic book on the big screen, but guys trying to use history or culture as an excuse for just being plain racist is so transparent. I know that Hogun isn't a real Asgardian, but he might as well be one. They don't really treat him any differently, and even Hogun calls himself an Asgardian. Or don't you remember back when Thor first dropped Asgard down in Oklahoma Hogun's comment of wanting to be the first Asgardian with a tan?

Thing is, unless the guy was actually hating on Smith because he was a racist and didn't want to go see a black guy, then he had a point as a fan of the source material. I get annoyed when people change things from source material I enjoy. I'm not going to boycott anything, it's much more fun to go see it and moan after, and in the case of Heimdall's skin, it doesnt really effect the story. If they had made Heimdall a completely different character - say made him a god visiting from Africa or made him an out of place hip gangster just cos he's black, that would be different. Granted, in the case of Wild Wild West, he shouldnt have gone to see it because it was one of the worst movies ever, but still if he was a fan of whatever the source material was, then he had a right to be annoyed that they made a change like that, because in that case, they did change the character to be more 'black' just because they hired Smith for the part.

Oh no, the hate-filled group doesn't want to see our movie!
Idiots. In multiple ways of course, but with the ineffectual boycott in particular.

As a Norwegian, who grew up with the stories of Thor and the other gods of norse mythology, I just want to say that I am really pissed off and frankly insulted, that these white supremacist bastards have taken MY cultural heritage to promote their own f***ed up, racist and disgusting ideology/agenda.

/\ I think that that says it better than anything else. I'm a bit of a Norse mythology buff and it kinda irritates me when it gets co-opted by a bunch of ignorant racists. it's a rich and wonderful mythology and I don't recall any saga that promoted racism.

It doesnt, it's simply the tales of the, generally, big and blonde supermen that racists tend to love.
Most of the links to racism comes from the whole Wagner operas being adopted by Hitler and his love for the Nordic myths.

This are the same type of jackwagons who took Jamaican culture (ska and regae) and turned it in to a racist cultural thing, and a few years alter they took skinhead culture as their own, except of course for the entire point of skinhead culture being acceptence of others, so the Skins had to start calling themselves SHARPs (skinheads against racial prejudice) to create a barrier.
I really dislike these types. And seeing as I am part Swedish, co-opting Norse mythology does indeed pis me off. I bed if they cast a villain as a black guy this group would have less bad to say.

Loki's kids include a giant wolf, a sea serpent, and a woman who's rotting away from the bottom up. Is a black Asgardian harder to accept than that?

Um ... I probably should have mentioned that the guy always would make some totally racist statements, and then he'd follow it up with "But I'm not racist." Funny thing was, I was the trainer on a piece of equipment in the department, and he went to the group leader and asked to be trained by someone else. Groupleader told him that if he was to be trained on it on our shift, I was the guy who would train him. He declined. And he wasn't a huge fan of the source material, because I asked him questions about it and he didn't know the answers. Unlike one of my buds who had the rule that if Wild Wild West came on, everything had to grind to a screeching halt. He would even turn the little woman down if she was getting frisky if the show came on ... As for me, I'm a fan of a lot of source material, but I don't care who plays the part as long as they are good in the role.

The funny thing about Kingpin is that he was originally supposed to be black. The only reason he's white is because Stan Lee was worried about offending people by having a black villain rather than a black hero.
