Bands, TV shows, etc where a character or actor (or musician, etc) got replaced and the replacement was actually better than the original.
Guns N Rose - Steve Adler is a great Rock Star, but Matt Sorum is a much better drummer

Indiana Jones - It was supposed to be Tom Selleck, but since the CBS contract wouldn't allow it, they had to replace him with Harrison Ford. No way does it become a franchise without Harrison Ford as Indy.

This 100%. I was going to post that but couldn't remember the guys name. This happens a lot in music I guess. You get much better candidates when you have the pick of the litter instead of your best buddies

AC/DC: Brian Johnson taking over for Bon Scott I respectfully disagree. Johnson was an awesome replacement, but I wouldn't say it was better than Scott. It's just a matter of preference.

Back to the Future: Fox over Stoltz MST3K: Murphy over Weinstein (though I'm personally a huge fan of Weinstein's Servo I will give credit where it's due) Blazing Saddles: Wilder over Young (Gig Young was perfect as the MC in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? but Wilder was just as special in this part and I don't think Young would've created such wonderful magic in the part) Rush: Peart over Rumsey (no contest here)

Charles Winchester taking over the lead antagonist role from Frank Burns on M*A*S*H. Apples and Oranges. I think Winchester fits in better with the themes later MASH explored but Linville's performance was incredible and the was the linchpin for the rest of the cast in the early MASH seasons.

I would say Jefferson was an improvement over Steve on Married, With Children. That said, it was also different, so maybe it was apples and oranges.

Indiana Jones - It was supposed to be Tom Selleck, but since the CBS contract wouldn't allow it, they had to replace him with Harrison Ford. No way does it become a franchise without Harrison Ford as Indy. But we don't know for sure it would have been better. Harrison Ford is my favourite film star and Indiana Jones is probably my favourite trilogy (not including the fourth) and it does seem like a perfect fit. But as we never saw Selleck as Indy, we'll never know. Maggie Gyllenhaal was better than Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes. Mick Taylor was a better guitarist than Brian Jones and some might argue Ron Wood is better than Mick Taylor.

In Misfits, Rudy replaced Nathan and was so much more entertaining.

Eric Singer replacing Peter Criss in...'04, I think. Singer is just a far better drummer than Criss could ever hope to be (IMO), especially considering how much Criss was phoning it in towards the end of his run.
Technically, that should be Singer replacing Carr - but that's hardly a fair example all things considered. So, Singer replacing Criss it is.
