I was 24 before I had a "real" job - I had done a few odd things through high school but nothing steady. After I graduated from college it was difficult to find work - I had a couple interviews, mostly no responses or polite letters of rejection, but no offers. I had a job for a week that I hated and was not qualified at all to do. Then I got what was at the time a seasonal job at a college bookstore, worked hard enough where it became permanent, and am still there. It's not much but it's mine, and I don't have to feel like I'm leeching off my parents. I'm looking for something better, but in the meantime I'm making money and getting experience.
So I guess my advice:
Look for almost anything. At the same time, don't go into something you hate or cannot do, just to do it. Look for temporary or seasonal jobs at places that operate year round, and if you get a job like that, do a good job. It's not a guarantee, but some places that offer seasonal spots are also using those spots as a trial period to see if you're a good worker. Get motivated - some of the other people have said this already. It already seems like you know what you want but it also seems like you need a little push to get things rolling. You'll probably have to start small, but the important thing is you have to start.

Honestly, sad to say it... and I hope it doesn't come to this... but you might need to hit rock bottom.
I was in a similar situation, then had everything taken away due to my stubbornness and procrastination. That finally snapped me into place and I have been fine ever since. Okay, I can't say I'm a model person... I still slack, i still procrastinate, I still do things I probably shouldn't... but the serious stuff, the financial, bill-to-bill, maintaining a life, stuff has finally fallen into place.
I had a happy ending, but for an entire year and a half it was pure hell, and it was a hell from my own doing.
I hope you make a change before that happens, because the longer this goes...... it WILL happen.

Be honest with yourself.
Why don't you want a job?
When I dropped out of high school in 1995, I sat on my butt for a year, because I didn't want a job. Job's seemed to suck ass, long hours, loads of bS and not much money. (lol I was kinda right). I also don't sleep very well and don't like getting up in the morning. But I finally got off my but and on the same day, passed my Learners test and got my first job! I had no resume and was in a tracksuit lol, but the employer said I was the only one who looked like I wanted to work.
Having a job is great. I cant put enough emphasis on how amazing it is to have your own money.
I have also been where you are now and dude, she is almost out the door. MY gf left me way back then and we were very happy together.

27 and spent your early working years shitting on fast food as a first job option? Yeah, sorry to tell you, but I'm not surprised that you haven't been called back. No one should ever get high and mighty about a first job, you haven't earned it yet. It's likely made you a gigantic red flag to employers, because while they'll take a flier on a 16-year-old without a job history, a 27 year old with no job history looks worse. And the way the economy is, there's a dozen people who aren't slackers who are applying for that same job.
Your first job doesn't have to offer you a life-long career path, but employers are looking at your age and tossing out the application because you've been legal working age for over a decade and have nothing to show for it. Canvas temp agencies and your city's job center. Check big box stores, see if there are any local government positions open, or, if all else fails, find some place that needs volunteers and use that to try to get something to put on an application.

I have the opposite problem. I'm 27 and I've had a job for ten years, but I've never had a girlfriend ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

f*** I wish I had your life. 27, never had a job, and have a girlfriend sounds amazing! Anywho also try to look for dirty grunt labour jobs in construction or a warehouse or in natural resources. I know PA's economy is mostly based on manufacturing and natural resources and I read there is a natural gas boom as well.
Also remember when it comes to job interviews, display tons of confidence and sincerity and f***ing lie and white lie if you can. It's never if you are the most qualified but rather by impression and character. Because the employers want to hire people they want to work with every day.

No, but the army isn't exactly a quick fix. For one thing there's the weeks it takes for the brass to process all your forms and shit, then you have to pass the tests, and even then it can take months for a spot to open up. Granted that's the Canadian army and it might go quicker in the states but the process still takes a long ass time, and the OP makes it sounds like he wants something sooner rather than later.

No offense, but shame on you for being 27 and never having a job. I get the social anxiety thing, but there's plenty of people with debilitating mental disorders who get a job a full decade before you do. If you're fit and able to work then get a job, there are no jobs that you are above. You don't need a job that winds up being what you do for the rest of your life, but you have to do something.
I hate to be a jerk, but you're 27 and the reason you haven't had a job yet is because you don't want one, and haven't motivated yourself to get one.

I wasn't on a payroll until I was 26, that was a three week temp job that I did in two, put myself out of work. The next one was the one I had for 5 years before I got bullied out the door. While I worked there I had five or so different side jobs. I am in a new job now, on my way out the door. All of my jobs, every one, came because I had connections and I interview like a mother funker.
Before I hit the work force I ran my own business for 10 years. I was great at the job, but made little money. Wasn't really about money anyway.
But here is the thing, I have social anxiety, some days it is crippling, introverted too. I also have health problems. Work is really hard for me. I do love it though. My business was as a concert promoter, as such I had to go out in social areas and talk to people, strangers. Large groups, small groups. It was easy for some reason. Temp job was a factory deal. No biggie, kinda hated it.
Then I became an educator, teaching groups of all ages. I had to be in front of groups and give lessons and speeches. Every side job was related to the field. So I was forcing my socially anxious ass to do stuff.
It has helped me a great deal, but there was an effect. I can be all kinds of social at work. But once I sit in my car, I am done. I shut down. Going to get groceries because a nightmare. Being around people is awful. I do nothing socially outside of work now. I am working on balance.
But dude, if I can get out there, you can. Talk to people. Even if it is going to shovel snow in the neighborhood. Get involved with public service. Build up yourself and connections, then go for the job. And if that doesn't work, try to work from home in some way.

I can honestly say, that this is one of those threads, where I can read it and feel like I can give advice, but at the same time, help me motivate myself with the responses. I am 27 years old, with very little job experience. Not to say that I have never had a job, but they have been few and far between. And honestly, just like Frisky, part of it is social anxiety and depression with me. But it's also a combination of never knowing really HOW to get a job, and maybe, just maybe, I didn't WANT one. Because I've been lazy and procrastinate. I still am. But really the first thing that really helped me started getting motivated, is moving to Alaska for a while back in 2010 and then going back to college at Eastern Illinois a year later, where I still go. Going back was probably one of the best things to happen to me, because I know that, with the career I want, a career in Acting. I know that I need to get my ass in gear for a job. But at the same time, I was afraid, so one of the things that you need to do, as I think some people in this thread has said, take small jobs first to build you up. Like for me currently, I work as a singer at a local church. I don't make much, but it's something. I'm actually thankful for this thread, because I know that, at sometime, I need to get my ass in gear. Because I too have a girlfriend, a girlfriend I want to marry sometime down the line. But I can't support myself, let alone her. So getting out of college the thing I need to do the very most is to go on acting auditions, and look for jobs to help me build up to the point where I can support myself. I know you can it, if you motivate yourself. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Apply for retail or warehouse jobs. Go on Craigslist. Monster and Workopolis are dead ends.

It is that you can't stop thinking, you can't stop panicking, you feel closed in with no way out. Work can be pure f***ing hell for people with those issues.

I procrastinated alot even though I have very little work experience myself...the reason I never have held a regular job is because I always said to myself I never wanna have to spend my days anwsering to someone else and stressing myself out.
Luckly I work for myself now so I have none of the problems.

Luckly I work for myself now so I have none of the problems. I think I said the same thing about myself years ago. I never saw myself as an someone who could sit in an office or being someones lackey. That...and I think I convinced myself long ago that the only thing I felt I was good at, or had any interest in was performing. Maybe not the best life choice, but at least I've stuck with it. But I know I have to make ends meat somehow and the theater world could be a rough place. Which is why I'm glad I'm still in college learning other skills other than just acting and singing. So, I'm in a better place now than I was a few years ago.
