I'm not trying to get a hate thread going here, I just want to know: what is the logic in having Batista win? There was an obvious poplular choice of the fans, but for whatever reason that wasn't happening, so the spot has to go to someone else, it's a pretty big roll of the dice to go with an unproven commodity. Sure he was popular, had some good to great matches, and is certainly main event calibre, but that was four years ago. You've got a guy coming in with questionable conditioning, questionable ring work, and the biggest question mark of all, a questionable fan reaction. Those are some huge question marks for the biggest event of the year, particularly considering that with the unified titles, he has to be in the biggest match of the card.
Is this gutsy or just plaid stupid? What is the thought process that led to this?

They overestimated his appeal.

Because he'll be in a blockbuster this summer.

Probably because of Guardians of the Galaxy. It looks good having a movie star become the champion, like Rock did last year.

It didn't look good having Rock become champ either.

I'll second the Guardians of the Galaxy reason.
They couldn't get the Rock back this year, so they went for the other "movie star".
(Not meant to sound snarky, but I've never even heard of another movie with Batista in it so I find it strange calling him a movie star.)

Probably planned for a while but the rating Monday sealed the deal, if it needed sealing. Simple as that really, they're going with a guy their audience numbers tell them there's most interest in. Or in today's speak "Spitting in the face of the fans". Pick your poison.

Batista doesn't warrant the Rock demigod treatment.

A lot of you got excited about his return. I haven't forgot that at all. I didn't. For me, I would rather watch Alberto Del Rio wrestle in a match then watch a Batista Match. For me he is equal to me watching paint drying... And I would rather watch the paint dry then watch him.

Yeah, this was the first thing I posted in the Daniel Bryan thread. Even taking away the Bryan factor, I don't get why someone who hasn't wrestled in 4 years and was a star in an era that wasn't all that popular to begin with should be main eventing Wrestlemania. And I don't even dislike Batista. People have brought up the movie star thing but Batista is not exactly The Rock.

Probably because of Guardians of the Galaxy. It looks good having a movie star become the champion, like Rock did last year. But that comes out after Mania. Aside from that he's been in that RZA martial arts movie no one saw.

Aside from that he's been in that RZA martial arts movie no one saw. Yeah, but he could be champion for a while assuming he wins. Even if he doesn't, he'll still be around in the WWE, so when people see that big guy in the Marvel movie, they'll look him up and see he's a wrestler.

He was a star and a draw a little less than a decade ago and that is what Mania is all about now. He'll win, go to Summerslam and lose to someone so he can go off on his media stuff and take some time off provided his body holds up that long.

The main event belongs to movie stars now. One of the highest honours in the company isn't even attainable from within the company anymore.

Or in today's speak "Spitting in the face of the fans". Pick your poison. You promote an old-timer coming back who was popular back in the day, and of course it'll pop a rating. It's just the one-time curiosity factor. Not something to base business decisions on. They did it for Rock and the Mania buyrate tanked big time last year as many of us predicted. And Batista isn't anywhere near the Rock's league. Another smart move from the powers that be.

He was in a stable with the boss. Seriously NAO and Shawn bring up DX whenever they appear like the entirety of their careers was based on Hunter's involvement. Now we can move on to the much anticipated in the Levesque household tenuous Evolution tension/reunions. Then there was that making of CM Punk that involved his Clique buddy sticking Punk only for Trips to avenge the poor little guy champion. Ah good times when critics be damned you can just keep rewriting history until you are just as important as Rock and Austin.

Probably because of Guardians of the Galaxy. It looks good having a movie star become the champion, like Rock did last year. This is a stupid reason if true. Batista is like 1/100th of the star The Rock is. Rock is a bonafide A-Lister. Yes, Batista is in a possible summer blockbuster, but he's like the 10th most famous guy in the movie. It's not like he's going to be coming out on Regis and Kelly or David Letterman with the WWE title. They're going to send him to do the press stuff that the more famous people (Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, etc.) don't want to do.
